Chapter 49: Oh~ the Joys of Crafting

"Just give me a few days and I'll have your requests made to the dot," Brittany said as she escorted Fei and Sofia outside her home.

"In the meantime, you can use this gauntlet as a substitute. It's the same one that I've made for you. I knew that something like this might happen, so I prepared one just in case," she said as she tossed Fei a gauntlet of the same type. Fei caught it in her hands.

"Thanks, Brit. I knew I can count on you," Fei said as she hugged her friend.

"Yeah, yeah. Now get out here, you're making me lose valuable time," Brittany jokingly said as she urged Fei and Sofia to be on their way.

As their figure receded in the distance, Chris emerged from inside the house, placing his hands above her shoulders, patting them ever so lightly.

"Fei sure has unusual tastes for weapons for a mage," he commented.

"Yeah. But that's what makes her 'her' if you get what I mean,"

In her hand, she is still holding the magical core that she received from the two.

"Now then, better start working on this baby as soon as I get dinner,"

"Oh? Perfect timing, I was just about to call you,"

"Really? Let's eat then,"

They went back inside their home/workshop. For the first time in a while, the sound of metal striking metal was replaced by the impish laughter of the couple as they ate their meal.

Back at the Ancdam Academy of Sorcery and Magic.

In one of the beds of the infirmary ward, a girl was sleeping. Half of her face was bandaged, as well as her entire left arm starting from the shoulders down. A patrolling nurse made her round to the patients, checking the condition of each and every one. She continued her monitoring until she got to the side where the girl was sleeping. She checked the girls' vitals, before jotting it down in her notes.

"Vital signs, normal. No signs of regaining consciousness yet, so far," she said.

She was about to leave to head for the next patient when she stopped in her tracks.

"..ei.. fia.."

She looked toward the girl, her mouth constantly opening and closing as she tried to speak words that are barely audible to the nurse. She leaned closer to the girl, perhaps checking if she really did talk or if she was just hearing things.

"Fei ... Sofia ..." she muttered.

The nurse was at a loss for words. She quickly runs outside to get a doctor right away.

The girl, Cybel, was left staring at the unfamiliar ceiling. The last thing she remembered was when they finally found the missing students. It was at that moment that she felt intense pain, before finally passing out.

"Where am I?" she asked, bewildered by the unfamiliar place. She pulled out the various syringes and paraphernalia that are connected to her, yanking them out as she staggered toward the exit. The nurse returned, together with a doctor in tow.

"Cybel! You shouldn't be moving yet!" she yelled.

Cybel, like a puppet whose strings were suddenly cut, was dumped to the ground, her feet losing all of their strength from the sudden movement.

"You should rest first. Come, let me help you back to your bed,"

"But, but, Miss Fei and Miss Sofia, where are they?"

"Don't worry about them. You can come to visit them when you've fully recovered,"

"Really?"

"Yes, really. Now, you should really rest. Nurse, help me get Cybel back to her bed,"

The nurse went and assisted the doctor in escorting her back.

"I'm glad .... that they are fine," she said, as she drifted off again into dreamland. Seeing her calm expression, the doctor and nurse nodded to each other, before placing a blanket over her body. As the nurse was tucking her in, she noticed something reflecting in her bandaged arm. She took a peek, only to see what looked like scales. She immediately jumped back despite herself, getting the attention of the doctor.

"What happened?" the doctor asked. The nurse can only point at Cybel's exposed arm. The doctor, seeing her reaction, decided to check it for herself. Slowly, she peeled the bandages that the nurse was pointing at, finally revealing what was inside.

"You sure freaked me out. There's nothing there, only her smooth skin," the doctor said as she wrapped her arms once again.

"But ... I was sure ... I saw some scales," she said.

"I think it's time for you to rest as well. Ask the next nurse to take over your shift, say that it was my order," the doctor said.

The nurse can't help but wonder if she was only seeing things. Regardless, she will be having an earlier rest tonight, so everything works out for her. She decided to follow the doctor's plan and rest for the night.

Back in Drethia.

The different teams of assessors have been preparing to embark on the Northern province. Since they will only be taking the same path up until Ancdam, which borders the Northern Province and kingdom, they decided to place their baggage in a single carriage.

"Why isn't there any assessor that has a Dimension Pocket!? My arms are killing me!" said the familiar spear-wielding assessor, Rembrandt, as he placed another luggage atop the carriage.

"Stop your whining and move those hips!" shouted one more assessor, the one given the title 'Berseker', Gladius Murkham. "If you have the energy to complain, then you surely have the energy to move those limbs as well, now go!" he added.

"Okay, fine!" Rembrandt said as he tossed another piece of luggage into the tray. Gladius walked towards another pile of luggage.

"Hey, Eisen! Swap teams with me! I can't relax with that big, old meaner over there nitpicking me all the time," he said to Eisen who was, the same as him, was also stacking the supplies. "I bet yours is better, you have Miss Rose there, so I bet you must be feeling lucky!"

Eisen looked at him as he tossed another one of the luggage into the carriage.

"Not really. Feel free if you wanted to, but I doubt 'he' will allow it," Esein replied.

"He?"

"... Kreig Drygar,"

"Oh, him? Yeah, well, I guess there's no way then," he said as he casually dropped the idea. "OK, back to work before Mr. Muscle sees me chatting away," he said.

"Yeah,"

Soon after, all the luggage have been placed in the carriage. Eisen and Rembrandt can be seen resting underneath a shady tree, quenching their parched throat with water from a water carrier made from Tradilek skin.

"Man, that was hard. I didn't know manual labor could also be this tiresome," Rembrandt said as he took another swig from his container. "Still, what do you suppose we'll find further North?"

"... I don't know," Eisen replied. "But, I just can't shake this foreboding feeling, as if something dark is lurking behind us during this mission"

"Premonition, huh? Can't get too careful. I'll keep that in mind," he said.

"Everyone ready?" shouted someone at the lead group. "We will be departing in ten minutes!" he announced.

Eisen and Rembrandt got up from their spot. Sore from the tedious labor they'd just finished, they stretched their tired limbs, eliciting an "argh" sound as their joints popped.

"Well, time to get a move on then. I wish the best of luck to you and your group," Rembrandt said as he walked towards his own groupmates. Eisen was left alone in the shade.

"Hey! We're leaving!" Vince shouted from a distance.

Eisen moved his feet to his group. His walk is slow and steady. He checked his personal effects: the sword on his waist and his grimoire. Everything is in place. But what can be causing him to feel restless? Eisen couldn't get any clear answer to his question for now.

"You're slow! Get a move on!"

Another call incited him to walk faster.

Perhaps he'll know the answer there, at the north.

He can do nothing but wish for that to be the case.
