Chapter 39: Training.
[Third person POV]
Every student from class 1-A went to their respective internships, Kaito and Todoroki were in their way towards Endeavor's hero agency.
'Endeavor. I was focusing too much in the incident at Hosu that I may have taken a hasty decision.' Kaito.
"Kobayashi." Todoroki.
"Yes?"
"Why did you come here? Given your past, and knowing how sharp you are, I assume that you know what kind of person my father is. So, why join him during the internship?"
"I have a hunch that I will get stronger here. I'm an all-rounder, be it rescue, search, medical or battle I have all the bases covered as far as knowledge is concerned. What I need, is to strengthen my body."
"And you assume that my father will be able to help you with that?"
"Yes."
"I see."
The rest of the travel was quiet until they arrived at Endeavor's hero agency.
(Meanwhile)
"Now I get it. You must be the ones who attacked UA. And you wanna recruit me to build up your little group again." Stain.
"Yeah. It'll be great, you've got so much experience." Shigaraki.
"And what's your mission?" Stain.
"For now? I really just wanna kill All Might. I like to destroy anything that pisses me off. Like these little brats here. Game over." Shigaraki shows two photos, one of Midoriya and the other one of Kaito.
"I was a fool to think you could offer me anything. It turns out, you're the type of person I hate most in this world." Stain begins to unsheathe one of his swords.
"Hm?" Shigaraki.
"The goals of your "league" are those of a child. What meaning is there to killing if you don't have real convictions?" Stain.
'The Hero killer Stain. Tomura Shigaraki cares only about wanton violence, so we brought this man in to guide him. Perhaps we made a mistake.' Kurogiri.
"Master. Should I step in?"
"Let it happen. It's possible this is the only way he'll learn anything. He needs to think about the ways he must grow. How he can mature. Only then will he reach his potential." "Master."
[Beast Jeanist Hero Agency]
"To be perfectly frank, I don't like you very much." Jeanist.
"Huh?" Bakugo.
"I know full well why you chose my agency. Because I'm one of the top five most popular heroes."
"Hey, look, you're the one who made an offer for me." Bakugo irritated.
"Yes. Recently, all my recruits have been perfect little angels, so you certainly stood out. I watched the way you fought at the sports festival. You have a good handle on your powerful Quirk, and a decent grasp of its application as well."
"You're an outstanding talent. I'd say you're already good enough to take on as a sidekick. However, you do have a fatal flaw. You believe you're the best, and you display that belief without regard for how it reflects on you or your image. You have a ferocious nature."
"Don't tell me you brought me here just to give me a lecture! Ah—" Bakugo gets trapped by the fiber in his clothing.
"I have to correct people like you. It's part of my duty to society. Heroes and villains are cut from the same cloth. So, your job here is to watch me. I'll show you what makes someone a hero."
"What in the hell are you doing?"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm educating you on becoming an exemplary pro. That includes being aware of the way you speak, your appearance, controlling your emotions, your morals. There are countless things you need to learn, but in the brief period of one week, I will stitch these things into the fabric of your being."
'I…I chose the wrong agency!' Bakugo.
[Endeavor agency]
"I've been waiting for you, Shoto. You're finally ready to walk down the path of the mighty." Endeavor greet Todoroki in his office.
"I have no intention of following any path you've created. Only I can decide my future." Todoroki.
"Heh. Is that so? You should go get ready. We're going out." Endeavor.
"Where to?"
"It's time I show you what it means to be a hero."
"Curious, last time I checked, heroes don't send innocent ladies to the hospital." Kaito spoke in a cold tone.
"What are you doing here?" Endeavor.
"Have the flames in your beard burned through your brain cells? You send me an application." Kaito.
(Note: He really, really! Dislikes Endeavor.)
"Burnin!"
"Yeah boss!?"
"Did someone send an application to Kobayashi Kaito?"
"Yes, boss!"
"Who authorized it?"
"You, boss!"
"Huh? Explain."
"When we were at the festival. You said that 'you met an interesting boy and that if he wins the first place, we should invite him'. Remember?"
'That's right. I was impressed after his battle against the kid from the Iida family and those heated boots that he used. Dammit! I wanted to dedicate this entire time of training to Shoto. Maybe if I leave him with some of my sidekicks…'
"Don't even think about it." Kaito tells Endeavor.
"Todoroki, you owe a favor, right?"
"For what?"
"You declared war against me before the sports festival, ergo since I won, you need to comply to one of my requests."
"Is that how it works? Ok."
"Now, I'm gonna cash it. If Endeavor doesn't personally train me alongside you, you will not use your flames. How about that?"
Endeavor almost pops a vein.
"Weren't you the one who told me to use my flames in the first place?"
"Yes, but I think your dad will handle my training to some second-rate sidekicks. I want the real deal, Top 2 level training."
"What do you say Mr. 2?"
"Fine! But if you can't keep up with the training, then don't bother crying!"
'Hehe, checkmate, I would never make Todoroki do such a thing, but you don't need to know that. Hosu, here I come.'
(Meanwhile-Izuku Midoriya)
'He can't be serious. The first day of training down, and all he did was test me once. No actual hero work or field training. He just passed out after coming back with food.'
'Gran Torino...I didn't get any hits when I searched for that name. A UA teacher for just one year. He's one big mystery. I need to change the way that I think about OFA. It's part of me. My classmates use their Quirks as if it's completely natural.'
'But I still think of mine as something I have to call upon. If I could use even five percent of my power like it was nothing. I'd be able to move like Kacchan or Kaito.'
'Aizawa-sensei and Kirishima said the same thing. If I can just master my Quirk, I'll be able to do so many things! But first, I need to be able to use it instantly. All right! I'll try this out. Five percent should be enough here.'
'One, two, three, the roof. That shouldn't be too hard, right? Imagine the egg not exploding in the microwave!'
Midoriya jumps and smashes himself against the wall.
'I was afraid that would happen. I need to brace myself, and use my arms to cushion the impact. Which means, for the second jump, I need to put power into both my arms and my legs. But if I don't do it quickly enough, then I'll end up breaking my bones in the fall! I can't take the time to visualize the result like I normally do. But I have to try it."
Midoriya begins to repeat the process over and over again, each time, falling from a higher altitude.
'Gotta put some power in my arms.'
*CRASH*
'This time I'll switch faster!'
*CRASH*
'Faster, stupid! Do it faster!'
*PAINFUL GRUNTS*
'Maybe I should take this from a different approach.' Midoriya closes his eyes and begins to meditate and uses the TCBT (Total Concentration Breathing Technique.)
Midoriya feels his body feeling stronger and healing somewhat faster. He then, without realizing, he starts using OFA all over his body.
Midoriya slowly opens his eyes and sees how the energy flows throughout his body.
'This! This is OFA! OFA and the TCBT are like two peas in a pod. Each technique complements the other, OFA gives me power beyond what my body can handles, and TCBT regulates and amplifies said energy to usable outputs.'
The energy surrounding Midoriya disappears and he gets up.
'I think I understand why Kaito has never teached this technique to anyone. It wasn't because of what happened to me, it was because of what would happen if a villain gets his hands over it, the mere thought makes me shiver.'
'Alright, time to kick it up a notch.' Midoriya covers his whole body with OFA.
He sets the output to 5%, then he uses TCBT and the output increases to 10%.
'It hurts, but its bearable. Now, comes the second part of my training.'
Midoriya repeats the exercise over and over all night.
[Endeavor HQ]
After the first day of fighting some villains, Kaito is in the training room using as many dumbbells as he can carry.
Todoroki enters the training room to blow off some steam. Spending a whole day with his father is not exactly something "enjoyable".
While he exercises, he notices that Kaito's breathing never changes. Even after doing 100 push-ups with his palms, he doesn't appear to be that tired.
Eventually Kaito decides to take a break. Todoroki passes him a towel and a bottle of water.
"Why do you seem so obsessed with strength?" Todoroki asks Kaito.
"I will answer that question with another one. If you were given the chance to be born with any quirk, would you choose one, and why?"
Todoroki was confused by the sudden question but decided to answer it.
"I would choose an ice quirk, but that no matter how cold I get, it will never endanger me."
"Why you ask?"
"In my case, I would decide to be born without one."
Todoroki is shocked, he knows that people without quirks get discriminated in the society, so he couldn't understand why Kaito, who experienced said reject beforehand, wouldn't want a quirk.
"Why?"
"I have always admired hard-working people, with so little they can do so much for others. I feel that a quirk is a characteristic that devalues said actions. Yeah, they're great and all, but what makes a hero so great, it's never been a quirk, it's a willingness to do the right thing, and never give up. therefore, I will break the standards of this society, and I will advance as a hero without gift, regardless of what everyone thinks of me. That's also why I have to give my 200%, to surpass people like All Might, whose strength goes beyond normal." Kaito smiles in the end and then goes back to train.
That day, a sense of respect grew in Todoroki, said respect will become fuel for him to achieve higher heights with his half-cold, half-hot quirk.
'I guess, I cannot be any less, if he aims to the top, then I'll have to reach it first, otherwise, he will become the #1 Hero.' Todoroki thoughts before going back to train.
