Chapter 16: Bad luck
"WHERE IS MY SON?!?"Mrs Yonbara cried out as her mind started to think of the worst,tears were slowly dripping down from her wrinkled face while she awaited an answer from her son's superior,samurai captain Isane Tanaka.
Facing the distraught mother,Isane gritted his teeth and clenched his hands before lowering his head "I'm sorry maim….we couldn't save him,I'm truly..truly sorry".As Isane stood there in shame,tears could be seen dripping from his lowered head before they hitting the ground.
Hearing Isane's apology,Yonbara's face became as pale as a ghost,her legs gave out completely as she fall into a kneel position. "Kazuki…,how could you leave me alone…,after your father died you were all I have left"Yonbara said in a quiet tone.
Seeing the elderly woman suddenly kneeled,Isane hurriedly helped her up while he himself was constantly apologizing.
"It's not your fault Isane…"Yonbara said meekly to Isane.
At the same time, Higeki was being carried away to the hospital by nurses while a doctor performed first aid as they moved as Kuki's mother and grandfather followed closely from behind leaving only Kuki at the village entrance with Isane desperately trying to comfort the grieving elderly woman.
"It's fine Isane,I'm sure that you tried your best"Yonbara said to Isane and then continued "You guys were just unfortunate…"She went silent for a moment and then turned to look at Kuki who was just standing there watching.
"My husband died in a workplace accident three days after that kid was born.My son died on a mission with that kid's father…"Yonbara suddenly said in a monotone voice.
"Huh?Mrs Yonbara why are you talking about tha-"before Isane could finish his questioning Yonbara interrupted him.
"The rumors about him were all true,the eye that he possesses is cursed!"Yonbara stated while Isane and Kuki were left speechless.
"The reason that my husband and child died was bad luck…"Yonbara turned to Kuki with bloodshot eyes and lifted her index finger to point directly at him "bad luck FROM HIM!"
Before Isane could refute the grieving mother's outrageous and baseless claim,Yonbara abruptly rushed toward Kuki with her arms stretched forward.
Kuki,who froze from shock after hearing Yonbara's hurtful theory, was unable to react in time,leading to Yonbara grabbing his shoulders.
As Kuki tried to break himself free without harming the women he noticed something strange,but her grip was too strong for the five year old to handle.
"Mrs Yonbara don't!Let him go!"Isane shouted to try to persuade Yonbara as Yonbara continued to tighten her grip while constantly screaming "Give me back my family!"
After a while,Kuki managed to release his now bruised shoulder from the woman's grasp and started to run.
But before he could gain any distance,a hand reached out from behind him and hooked down on the right side of his mouth.
"GET BACK HERE!!"Yonbara yelled as she used ALL of her remaining strength to pull her hand back.
Suddenly, blood splattered onto Yonbara's hand as a faint ripping sound echoed in the air,Isane looked at Kuki's bloodied face in horror.
"AAAAHHHH!"Kuki cried out in pain as Yonbara fainted after realizing what she's done.
"KUKI!ARE YOU ALRIGHT!?!?"Isane rushed to Kuki's side and picked him up.As he ran to the hospital,Kuki stopped crying and asked Isane meekly with blood still spilling from his mouth "Uncle Isane…was it really my fault?"He said with tears lingering on his eyes.
"Nonsense,you're not cursed!We were just too weak to defeat the enemy…"Isane said as he held Kuki tighter in his arms.
