Chapter 3: Chapter 3

"Ahem, good morning new students. My name is Tomonari Mashima and I am in charge of Class-A this year. I teach English. This school doesn't rearrange the classes every year, so over the next three years, I hope I get to know all of you. Best regards. Although the entrance ceremony will be one hour from now in the gym, I will now distribute the list of special rules of this school and the matriculation guide."

From the front, handouts were passed around, when I got one in front of me I started skimming it as well as listening to Mashima explain. I read some information that was one of the reasons why I came here, I heard from one of my tutors that the Advanced Nuturting Highschool prohibited communication with the outside world, and I could finally enjoy my carefree life. I read some more.

Leaving school grounds is also forbidden. However, there are also many other facilities so that students don't suffer from being restricted. There are karaoke, theatre rooms, cafes, and even boutiques it's almost as if it is made up of a small town. And in the middle of the big city, the huge campus took up more than 600,000 square meters. There was also the S system that Mashima just started explaining.

"I will now hand out student ID cards. With this card, you can buy anything from any of the shops and facilities around campus. It works like a credit card. However, be careful of how many points you use. There's nothing you can't buy at school. If there's something on school grounds, it's purchasable. Student cards can be used by swiping them on the machines. Using the machines is really easy, so you won't have any trouble with them. The points will be automatically credited on the first day of the month. Everyone should already have 100,000 points on their card. Also, 1 point is worth 1 yen. Any more explanation is unnecessary."

The classroom was still pin-drop silence, everyone seemed to think that surely there was some sort of catch, or was giving Mashima the time to explain. Everyone was still surprised I saw some jaws drop, but no one audibly showed it. Mashima continued since there were no questions.

"This school measures the abilities of students. Everyone here, who passed the entrance exam, has shown some level of merit and worth. The amount of money is a reflection of your skills. Use without holding back. After graduation, however, all the points will be taken back. Since it's impossible to change these points into cash, there's no point in saving up the points. How the points are used is up to you. Use it on things you like or need. If you feel that no use for some of your points, you can always transfer them to someone else. However, bullying other people for points is prohibited. The school is very strict on matters concerning bullying."

Here is where some students started understanding that there was a catch to the 100,000 points. Firstly, Mashima never explicitly said that they would be paid the same amount every month. Secondly, he said in no uncertain terms that they were judged based on performance. What most students were missing though was the hidden cameras in the back of the classroom so they can judge in-class behaviour not just tests.

Mashima looked around for any questions, seeing this I raised my hand. He pointed at me, and I started asking my leading question.

"Mr.Mashima, are we going to get the same amount of points every month?"

"You are going to get the number of points the school deems you worthy of." Mashima answered which I thought was more information than he was allowed to give but I nodded my head to show him I understood. By now most of the unsure students have fully noticed that to continue to get the 100,000 points we will need to work hard and get good grades.

"Any other questions, No? Don't be late for the entrance ceremony." Mashima said and then exited leaving most students in their own thoughts. I looked over to Sakayanagi, she had a calm smile on, she has been wearing it ever since she heard about the S-system. Noticing my stare she turned to me and tilted her head to question me non-verbally since the class was still in thought. I tried to point my head over to the podium up in the front of the class. She seemed to understand my intentions surprisingly and nodded.

I got up from my desk and alerted the whole class to my presence, but I persevered and slowly made my way to the podium under the watchful gaze of 38 students. When I took up my position I started speaking.

"Before we do introductions. I would like to say that you guys and I do not only have to do well in class but also behave appropriately." I said keeping everyone's attention that I garnered from earlier I then see a petite hand rise. Thankfully I made a very intelligent friend already.

"Yes, the young miss in the back with the beret" I pretended to not know just in case of any rumours or complications, but she wasn't surprised and didn't miss a beat.

"Why would we have to behave as well? Didn't he just say those who do well get rewarded?" Sakayanagi questioned, although it sounded like a genuine question, she already knew the answers and was asking them so the others who jumped to those conclusions as well get to realize something.

"Mashima said that the points are based on the abilities of students, I'm just saying that it says a lot about the abilities of a student if they cannot stay quiet during a lesson, sleep during a lesson, and so on. It shows a distinct lack of care for your future. In my opinion, forethought is one of the most important abilities one can possess. I think that you guys can at least partially agree with me that thinking ahead is quite important." I thank Sakayanagi inwardly for her help in following my lead, but it's not quite done yet.

"Well I've said most of what I want to say, I'll start Class-A of on introductions. Hello everyone, I am Doi Katsu, about three and a half years ago I published a book titled 'Cry For Exile' so I have an interest in writing, other than that I enjoy singing, so please invite me to karaoke though I do like to keep myself busy so I might not be able to come. Happy to meet everyone, let's get along!" When I brought up 'Cry for Exile' some people thought it was a joke some people thought it was honest, and I won't lie about it, there's no reason to anyway. I call on the next person so they can introduce themselves.

"The person who asked the question, introduce yourself, and then will go like this" I made a kind of zigzag in the air to show the order of the introductions, Sakayanagi got up and did her introduction, she mentioned her disease as well as her interest in chess. The rest of the class gradually followed until everyone was introduced. Not many introductions were very memorable, but I will remember their names and faces no matter what. When the last person finishes I signal for the attention of the class again.

"Nice to meet you, everyone. Now, its time almost time for the entrance ceremony, I suggest you get going so you are not late. Remember what I said." Most students just nodded and started making their way to the ceremony. I met the eyes of Sakayanagi who has been staring at me lately, but instead of looking away, we continued to look in each other's eyes. Until the last student was gone for about a minute then I spoke up.
