Chapter 22: That’s a black card she’s holding

"This particular dress looks stunning. I love it. Quick, wrap it up for me."

"Hey! What do you think you are doing?" Cheryl lunged forward to grab the dress from Linda.

"I said I want the dress, and that is settled." Linda had a condescending look as she moved her hands out of Cheryl's reach.

Cheryl almost fell over but was swiftly pulled back by Kathleen's quick reflexes.

Her countenance was dark as she faced Linda, "I've already chosen that dress. How can you suddenly want it?

Kathleen knew that things were about to turn sour, but she was not one to shy away from trouble when it comes knocking at her door. Six years ago she would have ignored it, but not anymore. She was going to confront it headlong.

"I know you are deliberately courting trouble, but I'm not in the mood for your childish tantrums Miss Beazell"

"Look who we have here. I wonder why you're always on my trail?" Linda mocked, pretending to have just seen Kathleen.

She had actually seen Kathleen laughing and joking with Cheryl and was envious of how freely Kathleen enjoyed herself. How can she be at peace, with Kathleen having such a good time, hence, she decided to provoke her. Afterall there was no one here who would stand up for Kathleen.

"Trail you? Tsk! I'm not that jobless."

"Then why are you here if you didn't trail me. Anyways, Mister, I'm paying for that particular dress."

"Are you deaf? My friend here already picked that dress" Cheryl snapped.

"And So? You've not yet paid, and that means anyone can still have it."

Linda directly asked the staff to wrap it up for her brandishing a card from her bag to pay.

"I'm sorry Miss. This lady here has already picked the dress before you, so she has more right to it." Explained the salesman.

"Are you seriously going to oblige her and ignore your distinguished customers?" Fiona asked smugly.

"That's right, my family is on your royalty list and if you don't serve me well, what do you think the consequences will be? Think about it, can you afford to offend the Beazel family?"

Linda was clearly blackmailing him and she seemed to have succeeded as the staff changed his stance the next minute.

"Miss Beazell, I apologize for delaying you, I'll pack up the dress immediately. Is this the only item you want? You can pick as many clothes as possible and I'll gladly serve you."

"Are you sure you want to offend me?" Kathleen wore a cynical grin that gave one the creeps when facing the salesman.

She didn't want to put the salesman in a difficult situation but the way he suddenly cowered under Linda's threats was disappointing. He didn't qualify to be a staff in J and J.

Was he not supposed to report to the manager when faced with a situation he couldn't handle?

"Who do you think you are, that he can't offend you?"

"This lady is too much. How can she challenge Miss Beazel so blatantly. I'm sure she's not aware of who she's up against."

"You seem to have become more brazen after returning back. In case you have forgotten, you have always been a nobody that is not even qualified to clean the shoes of the servants from the Beazell family." Linda bragged.

Kathleen was pissed off with the way Linda constantly used her family name to coerce people into doing her biddings.

"You've been rattling about the Beazell family all this while, who the hell are the Beazell family anyway?"

She took out a black card and directly placed it on the counter right in front of the salesman, who was struck speechless after seeing the card.

"That's a black card, she's holding," Fiona shrieked, drawing Linda's attention to the card.

"Absolutely true, and I heard, there are very few people in the world that have it,"a lady affirmed

"How did she manage to get one?" She started looking at Kathleen in a whole new light, her eyes full of admiration. 'I'd better be wise and know where to pitch my tent,' she said to herself as she gradually moved away from Linda's side.

"Don't be deceived by her," Linda sneered. There was no way she was going to let those people think she was in any way inferior to Kathleen.

"It's obvious she stole the card." Linda continued with her accusations. How can she have a black card. Come to think of it, in the whole of Baltimore, the only two people with such a card are the Wyatts and the Hudsons."

"Oh oh oh! That means she must have stolen it from the Hudsons then. Remember she was once married to President Hudson" That's the only explanation Fiona could come up with.

At the sudden turn of events, the young lady who had previously distanced herself from Linda, exhaled sharply, luckily, she had not yet said anything that would implicate her.

Just then, the Manager rushed in from his office. Seeing the small crowd that have gathered, he was surprised and asked what was going on?

Before anyone could reply, he saw Kathleen and bowed reverently to her. "You are here Madam. I'm sorry for arriving late. I had no idea you came to the mall. Hope there is no problem?" he asked, turning his attention to the staff who was already shaking like a leaf.

"None that I can't handle," Kathleen dismissed with a wave of the hand.

"Why are you being so respectful to her?" snapped Fiona. "Is it because of the black card?"

"The black card?" repeated the manager.

Cheryl who has been silent all these while spoke up, "There is indeed a problem Manager. This lady here, accused my friend of theft. And as we all know, stealing is a serious crime and can damage someone's reputation within minutes, if not thoroughly handled."

The Manager gave Kathleen a puzzled look and after receiving a knowing look from Kathleen, decided to play along "What has she stolen, if I may ask?"

"She stole the Hudson's family black card and have the guts to use it to shop here." Linda took the accusation to a whole new level.
