Chapter 2: The Silver Capsule II

"It really is liquid silver crystal."

Some time later, the squad was gathered around a glowing silver capsule in the middle of the hull. The capsule was eight foot cylindrical and smooth with no openings or crevices. Although it had a solid cylindrical structure, prodding its surface would send ripples all around the object. Also, rather than lie on the metallic hull of the ship, it was stably floating midair with no support whatsoever.

The squad had no idea what such an object could be even after going through all their database and the fact that it was completely made out of the rare liquid silver crystal, one of the only materials to ever exist in the universe with self regeneration capabilities, made them unwilling to throw it out.

"Figured out what it is yet?" The sleazy voice of Fatface rang out of the cockpit. "If not I'm gonna need it off my ship. Can't have a potential voidspawn egg in here."

"Ever seen a voidspawn laying an egg Fatface?" Coaster asked incredulously.

"Ever wondered why it is called a voidspawn and not a voidcreaturethatcameoutofanegg?"

The mere thought of a voidspawn laying eggs was so ridiculous that even a newborn would find it extremely embarrassing to even have such a thought. Yet this grown up idiot had the nerve to mention it. Perhaps he should have considered Little Cannon's idea of throwing him out.

"Well if you don't know what it is then what stops me from assuming it is a voidspawn's egg?" Fatface shot back. "And just because you haven't seen a voidspawn laying an egg doesn't mean they can't. The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence."

Coaster was about to retort when Leah's voice rang out.

"Ignore him Coaster, you'll be demeaning yourself if you continue", earning herself a snort from the cockpit.

She lowered her hand and traced it over a bizarre emblem of a shield on the capsule, the only inscription on its surface. She repeated that subconsciously while thinking to herself.

"Don't tell me you actually think that is the egg of a voidspawn." On the side, Little Cannon was carefully scrutinizing Leah's actions with an odd look on her face.

"No, not that." Leah quickly answered. "This emblem really looks familiar." She said, still tracing the outline of the shield with her hand.

"What is it then?" Coaster asked.

"I'm not too sure" Leah responded, shaking her head. "We should take this with us to Xeros. The old Record Keeper will probably know what it is."

"Just tell us what you're not sure about." Cannon's impatient voice once again rang from the side.

Leah sighed deeply before answering.

"I think it's a hibernation capsule of one of the ancient Valkyries."

Her words made the entire hull fall silent. Cannon shook her head disappointingly.

"I knew you'd say that", she muttered

Upon hearing her, Coaster lost interest and returned to his corner. Rubbing soot off his eyes, he sighed deeply after which he spoke, his tone soft but firm.

"It's about time you let go of this delusion Leah.

Valkyries don't exist, never have and never will.

Celestials, gods, Valkyries, they're myths. Figments of our imagination. The sooner you accept that the better it would be for all of us."

Leah on the other hand remained adamant. Like a drowning person that had finally found hope, she firmly held on to her belief.

"They do. The Record Keeper found traces of them in his books, remember. Although we didn't find them then this might actually be it. If I recall accurately this was the emblem of the Valkyries; the shield representing their purpose as the defenders of the universe"

She raised her voice a bit, in a bid to invite the others to share in the excitement of her theory but unfortunately, they just weren't having it this time.

" Spare us your nonsense Leah", the pigtailed Cannon cut in, sounding quite annoyed. She rose to her feet, yelling furiously.

" Your last charade had us spend three whole years in the Inner Rims searching for those things you claim exist. Three whole years searching through ruins and scrap. Now If you want to remain a naïve little princess then that is up to you but spare us that nonsense."

"Ha! The irony." A voice squealed out from the cockpit

Leah didn't give up just yet.

"But the Record Keeper...."

"Don't even mention that senile old man..." Cannon was really fuming this time, however Coaster interjected before she could continue with her rant.

"That 'senile old man' is the one who accepted to harbor us for the next couple of months Cannon. Even if you don't accept his beliefs, accord him some respect"

Watching as she snorted and returned to her spot, Coaster sighed once more and said.

"We're all equally angry that Thenes has been destroyed Cannon, don't lash out on her. And Leah, just don't mention those things anymore."

"And we're taking this with us." He pointed at the capsule.

"Hey guys...." A sleazy voice rang over.

"Now wouldn't be a very good time Fatface." Coaster cut him off right away.

"I was going to say that we're nearing the Stargate.

"Can you stop misunderstanding me for once."

Fatface sounded quite irritated.

"I'm sorry man", Coaster conceded this time. Although Fatface spouted random unnecessary stuff on the regular, it was indeed wrong to judge him solely based on that.

"Great. Anyway did you know that squirebeasts feed on dung?"

...

"Well now you do."

.....

.....

.....

"My offer's still open."

Cannon was heard saying.

A while later, the ship approached the Stargate. As it drew nearer, the Stargate came into full view, its sheer size dwarfing the vessel. It was an awe-inspiring sight, spanning several kilometers in diameter. The Stargate's outer rim consisted of a series of interlocking, silver-gold metallic plates, adorned with intricate patterns that glowed with a soft luminescence. Each plate emitted a radiant energy field.

Within the gate's imposing frame, an otherworldly vortex churned with an ethereal glow. It was a swirling maelstrom of vibrant hues, a mesmerizing blend of colors swirling and twisting like a cosmic whirlpool. Sparks of energy crackled and danced within the vortex, creating a mesmerizing display of light and motion.

As the ship aligned itself with the Stargate, a beam of radiant energy extended from the gate's core, enveloping the vessel in a vibrant, shimmering glow. The crew, who had strapped themselves in place, braced themselves as the ship was drawn into the heart of the vortex, their surroundings warping and distorting as they crossed the threshold of the Stargate.
