Chapter 38: Meeting The Enemy

'The fact that I didn't notice her presence could only mean that she hid it. She wasn't the one following us so why is she here and helping us?' Alex thought to himself as the girl kept pushing them until they got to a mountain with a cave at the edge of it.

"You will be safe. Stay here and don't leave until everything is settled," she said to Alex and turned to leave.

"Hold on!" Alex ordered her causing her to abruptly halt and turn around. "Who are you and what business do you have with us?" He asked her.

"My name is Mikasa, I'm here to protect you," she replied.

Alex furrowed his brows as he didn't understand anything the girl was saying. How would someone he didn't know show up all of a sudden and claim to be protecting him?

"You don't need to understand anything as long as you are safe," Mikasa said to him as if understanding what he was thinking. "As long as you stay here, you and your friend will be safe."

"Safe from what exactly?" Alex asked her. "Tell me what is going on and who is after me!" He demanded.

"I am not good at lying so I'll tell you everything now, the choice will be yours to make afterward. Your school is under an attack and the enemy is a strong one, even the head of your school is no match for him. If you don't want to die like the others, stay here but if you choose to fight and die along with them, follow me," Mikasa replied and gazed at him.

"Tell me who the enemy is," Alex requested after listening to her.

"I don't know," Mikasa replied.

Alex silently stared at her. One thing is to fight but another thing is to know who the enemy is and what their missions are. He didn't want to die, that was for certain but will hiding here really keep him from dying? What if that thing watching them comes after him and attacks him? Not knowing what it was and how strong it was, there was no guarantee that he would be able to fight it.

"You are reluctant to make a decision, that's understandable. It's as Master said," Mikasa said to him.

"What master are you talking about?" Alex asked her.

"You'll find out very soon," she replied and ran off.

"Alex, are we going or not?" Raphael asked Alex. "I'll love to go and save as many people as I can, but if you decide not to, I don't mind staying with you—"

"Who says I'm not going?" Alex asked him and then ran in the same direction as the girl.

Raphael smiled and followed next. Soon, they caught up to the girl who scoffed and increased her pace. It was as though they were running a race to see who was the fastest among them. Mikasa was pretty fast, it was as though her legs weren't touching the ground with the way she kept sprinting through the trees. Behind her was Alex who was trying to keep the distance between them only a small one, then behind them was Raphael who despite how slow he was didn't want to be left behind and as such, fought to stay just a small distance away from them.

They ran for quite a while until they arrived at the place where the students were being surrounded by monsters with glowing eyes. Mikasa stopped and signaled for them to also stop.

"We can't go any further than this," she said to them.

"Why?" Alex asked while gazing at all the students who were being surrounded by monsters. Mikasa did not answer him and he furrowed his brows and looked around, that was when his eyes fell on someone familiar. "Damon?" He muttered, looking confused.

"That's my master, your uncle," Mikasa replied. "But I'd advise you don't get involved," she added.

"But why? What business does he have with the school?" Alex was curious about a lot of things and as such, he could not just mind his business like Mikasa had advised him to.

"The man with white hair is the Dean's older brother. As I am aware, they have never been at peace with each other,'' Mikasa replied.

''I still don't understand a thing here,'' Alex muttered with a frown on his face.

''What do you not understand?'' Mikasa calmly asked him.

''So what if they are brothers and they've never been at peace with each other? Why involve everyone around them in their mess? It makes no sense at all,'' Alex replied but just as he finished speaking, a monster sensed their presence and began to growl, drawing everyone's attention to them.

''Who is there? Show yourselves now or my dogs will do that for you!'' The man with the white hair bellowed and the monsters growled in response. The trio had no choice but to show themselves immediately. ''Oh? Who do we have here?'' He asked with a smile on his face.

Seeing Alex, Damon's face darkened immediately and he glared at Mikasa who abruptly lowered her head the moment she noticed the anger in his face.

Alex now had the opportunity to have a clear look at the situation of everyone, Derek and all the teachers were on their knees with their heads lowered. It was as though none of them could move or say a word to each other. And the Dean was standing face-to-face with his brother.

''What did we do to you?'' He asked the white-haired man who hissed and began to approach him. He tried to move his feet but for some reason, he couldn't move them.

''Did you say something?'' The white-haired man asked as he kept taking approaching him. ''I dare you to say that again!'' He said and Alex opened his mouth to talk as requested but when he tried to speak, he suddenly grabbed his throat and his eyes turned red that instant. ''You really have the nerves but not the strength. You are pretty wasted,'' he said with a scoff and turned around to walk away from him.

''I dare you to say that again!'' Alex forced himself and spoke, causing the man to abruptly halt.

He turned around with a smile on his face. ''What did you say?'' He asked Alex.

''Say that again!'' Alex repeated.

''Aren't you pretty wasted? What can you do about it-''

Before he could complete his statement, Alex jumped into the air. The white-haired man saw him move but before he could react, Alex had stomped him on the head causing him to fall on one knee. Though he was not able to injure him, he was able to land a blow on him, something that no one else had achieved since the meeting began.

Seeing what happened, Damon's eyes widened in surprise. He did not expect that Alex would be able to do what he did, it showed that he had improved a lot since their last meeting.

''Kid, take your friend and leave here! Don't bother trying to fight him, it's useless,'' Dean said to Alex with a sad expression on his face. He looked like he had lost all hope of winning and living.

''What are you saying?'' Alex asked him. ''What about the students? Who's gonna save them?''

''Forget about us and leave!'' The Dean replied.

''We'd rather fight than run away like cowards! I'm no coward like you,'' Alex replied and turned to face the white-haired man who was already on his feet. ''Let everyone go and take us. What do you say?'' He asked him.

''What!''

''What!''
