Chapter 73: The Aftermath

General POV:

Rose stood surrounded by the corpse of many Bastion units and Huntsmen. The surrounding soldiers started cheering at their hard-won victory. He too, was cheering with them, but for a different reason. While they were cheering about a victory that wiped out around the seventy percent of omnics in Great Britain, he was cheering because he gained a new power.

With so many of the omnic opposition gone, the hope to reclaim any lost cities was high. While the situation of the capital remained unknown, today marked a turning point in the war for Great Britain. Stories were going to be told of the amazing healers from Overwatch. Mainly the tale of Rose who fight alongside brave British soldiers when they were outnumbered 10:1.

While the British government converged to plan their next course of action, the medics of Overwatch continued their job. Even though the battle was won, there were many injured.

Shawn's POV:

I was no longer high on that feeling, but I was in a fantastic mood. Walking back to the hospital, I stared in wonder as I realized that walls were of no concern for me. The doctors and nurses working hard with their patients, I could feel their stress and different emotions.

Now that I wasn't in the moment and I could focus on it, all the different emotions hitting me at once in a rush was a bit overwhelming. But, no matter how I tried, I didn't know how to turn it off. So, I had little choice but to work with it.

Heading back into the infirmary, I get hit with waves of distress, frustration, and fear from the people here. I can remember the way everyone was fighting against the omnics. We all basically disregarded our own safety and fought like madmen. After the battle, many were suffering from that.

Getting in the appropriate attire and sterilizing my hands, I go over to the nearest unattended patient. Looking them over, I see he has a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Finding that the bullet passed through him, it's just a matter of healing him. Since, the matter is so simple, I decide to experiment with my newfound powers.

Since he's next to me, I try to signal his bioelectricity to start the healing process without contact. Seeing as how they just continued on their paths, my signals either went ignored, or never reached them. Drained from recent events, and ready to find some solitary to get some sleep, I decide to put this off for later and just heal all who need it before experimenting more. Placing my hands on him, I can feel the pain from his shoulder as I send signals to accelerate his healing process.

Before moving on to the next patient, I look over to see a young female doctor and can feel the stress from her as she's with a patient. She's basically running on fumes and doesn't look like she's in the best of states. Seeing how sluggish her bioelectricity was, she only had a couple more minutes before she would pass out from over exhaustion.

I decide to try one more thing before actually giving up on experimenting. I send a signal to her bioelectricity to release a small dose of adrenaline to give her a boost necessary to make it through to the rest of the patients. Her signals respond, as I can see her bioelectricity speed up. She immediately perks up, moving faster and more refined than she was moments before.

Moving on to the next patient, my mind reflects on how that worked. As I'm healing a large gash on a guy's arm, I realize the difference between actions and why it worked for her. With bioelectricity, as soon as they sense a wound and relay it to the brain, the healing process begins. When I intervene, I'm accelerating the process and I provide my own boost. What would usually take months to heal a hole in the shoulder only takes minutes with my help. But, with the doctor, she already had the resources in her own body, I just sent the signals to release them.

I look up in shock as I realize the implications behind what I could do with this information. Then I wonder what else I could unlock. Lately, I've been too complacent on my assault rifle and electric shield as a means of fighting, as I thought it was the most efficient way of dealing with the omnics. But, as seen today, once I leave my comfort zone, I think I can unlock new hidden potentials I'm letting go to waste.

As a memory from the fight plays in my mind, a thought strikes me. Weeks ago, when I attempted to take control of a guy, it failed miserably, killing him. What if, when I was fighting the omnics moments prior, I was controlling the soldiers, enhancing their performance.

Finished healing my current patient, I look around to find everyone was in a state of either healed or being healed. Other doctors, too, let out their breaths as they realized that we were finally finished. Once checking that every patient was in good conditions, they didn't hesitate to disperse, each going to get some much-needed rest as the nurses attended any patient's needs.

Of course, I could have, no, should have, followed their example and went to get some much-deserved rest as well. But my curiosity was too much. I needed to know.

Making sure to put on a random doctor's coat instead of the Overwatch medic uniform I was currently wearing, I headed to a patient's room who was here prior to the omnic attacks.

He was a middle-aged man who lay there sleeping. Checking his charts and listening to the signals from his bioelectricity told me that he was recovering from a concussion caused by blunt force trauma. As the last guy was on the verge of dying, this one was more or less recovering.

Standing next to him and touching his chest, I feel the slow rise and fall of his breathing. I decide to let the action be him raising his leg, since it's neigh impossible for a comatose patient to do so on their own.

Remembering what happened last time I tried to brute force the signals using the brain as the middleman, I attempt through another way. I search until I once again sense the neurons responsible for regulating the signals. Once again, the brain senses and intruder but doesn't do anything as I haven't done anything either. Knowing how this goes, I back out of the brain, and I can feel it relax.

I assumed that in order to control the rest of the body, that I would have needed to make commands from the brain. The issue is that the brain recognizes me as a foreign influence. I'm thinking it's because my own consciousness is required for this, and it senses that. Maybe I was overthinking this and it was much simpler than that.

Not really expecting much, without entering the brain, I send a signal to urgently raise his left leg. The signal relays to the neurons in the brain, which it processes in confusion. My eyes dart to his legs in time to see them shoot up, bringing a smile to my face.

I was going to add a bit more to wrap the chapter up, but I saw the word count was 1234 and knew that was how I needed to end it.
