Chapter 3: Only Time Will Tell
'Why is this guy glaring at me? He's acting like I just stole something extremely precise from him. I thought one gorilla in the hut was enough... SO THEN WHY IS THERE ANOTHER ONE SITTING DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME!!!'
[Earlier that day]
'1... 2... 3... 4'
"Hakkar! Na venta jucuca y bahol." My mother said from across the room.
'What's she all worked up about? All I'm doing is standing training, I can't just crawl on the ground for the rest of my life you know.'
Wait, why does she have a sash across her chest and back?
"Shakkar and Rei, hurc Hakkar and shava him kull to me." My mother said while looking over at us.
'Woah! I almost understood what you were trying to say. That's the first time I've been close to hearing a fully logical sentence. Just a matter of time I guess.'
As I was praising myself in my head, Rei grabbed me under the armpits like a cat, and handed me over to Mother.
Mother wasted no time and put me in that sash she was wearing around her chest.
'OH MY GOD! It's like a tiny hammock for babies, what's the special occasion though?'
As I lay there, unmoving inside my baby hammock, Mother proceeded to talk to Shakkar and Rei about something I couldn't understand.
When their conversation ended Shakkar and Rei looked like they were about to cry. I'm not sure what Mother said, but it seems I'm not going to like what's coming next.
As I was thinking about all the possibilities that could happen inside this tiny hut, Mother did the unthinkable and walked straight through the front 'door'.
My mouth was so wide open from the shock, that you'd probably be able to fly a plane into it. I mean, I never really thought I'd be able to leave the hut. Well, that is until I would've been able to walk out on my own two feet.
Shakkar and Rei continued to sulk behind us, but I was too focused on my surroundings to care about them.
In every direction I looked, I saw huts as far as my eyes could see. They were so close together, that the path Mother was walking down had only been about 4 feet wide.
I began to marvel at every little detail as we continued walking on the paths. The grass, the huts, the sun, the sky, and even the people we met along the way. Everything filled me with excitement, and I didn't know how to express myself.
I started bouncing around and babbling like a baby inside the little hammock. Mother took notice and had a wide smile plastered across her face. I was truly excited to see wherever we were going.
Nothing would have prepared me for what came next though.
'A river? A small one at that, but why are we at a river?'
As I continued to ponder about what was happening, Shakkar and Rei started taking off their clothes in broad daylight. It caught me so off guard that I turned over and had an embarrassed expression on my face.
'Explain! Why are we taking our clothes off in broad daylight? I get that you're upset, but please have some common decency and put your clothes back on. Tell them, Mother.'
She proceeded to put me on the ground, and as I was fascinated with how the grass felt between my fingers, she decided to remove her clothes as well.
My soul had left my body at this point, I couldn't understand why my family was acting like no one else was around.
'Has my family finally lost? I mean, I would too if I smelled like a dumpster on a hot summer day for 3 straight months. Wait... smell? THAT'S IT!!'
Finally, the cogs in my brain started to turn and they came to a conclusion so foreign I would almost call it alien. A bath, for the first time after being reincarnated I'll be able to cleanse myself of this filth.
I started to break down into tears as my mother undressed me and brought me into the water. I didn't care anymore, any shame I once had has flown out the window. If it's for a bath, I'll do anything.
Shakkar and Rei continued to pout for some reason, but yet again I was too enamored to care about what they were doing. This bath was akin to pure bliss for me, so you guys can cry all you want, but don't interrupt my bath time.
As the bath continued, I started thinking about all the events that had happened today.
'It seems I actually did end up in some sort of backwater tribe. Why then, what was the point of me being reincarnated as this child? If my mission is to just inform the world that reincarnation after death is a thing, I have bad news for you. I'm never going to tell anyone! If I did, there are only 2 outcomes, the first is that I become famous resulting in my protection, and the second is that the government tears me apart for information. Since neither of those options really excite me, I'll be keeping this knowledge to myself.'
Eventually, Mother pulled me out of my thoughts after she finished washing me, and decided it was time to get out of the river. Although this didn't please me, I was starting to get tired so I just accepted my fate.
As everyone got dressed, Mother placed me back in my hammock, and held me close to her body. The warmth I felt from her, and the fatigue of taking a bath resulted in me falling asleep before we even made it home.
Even in sleep my thoughts never stopped thinking about why I was reincarnated.
'Why me, who did it, what's the purpose, why a tribe, and if I were to die right now would I be reincarnated again?'
I just couldn't wrap my head around any of it, but I think that if I live long enough... I'll start to unravel these mysteries that haunt me even in my sleep.
I guess only time will tell.
