Chapter 2: Qiqiao festival (part two)

Synopsis: "STOP!!!! YOU THIEF!!!!"

TW: abuse

Liu Wei soared through the air with elegance, black robes dancing with the wind, before gracefully landing on the rooftop of an unknown house. The house was a lively one, filled with sounds of laughter and happiness.

The warm glow of the moonlight caressed his tall figure and added to his aura, making him seem like an immortal who had just descended from the heavens.

He breathed out a sigh of relief.

Although it wasn't hard for him to escape considering his skill, it was far more challenging for him to tolerate the noise that Old Bi and the others had been making earlier without assigning them random petty tasks as punishment.

Deciding to stargaze a little longer, he sat on the rooftop of the house for a while, staring at the starry night sky.

The stars brought him comfort.

They were the only ones who listened to him without judgment. He found their existence comforting.

A gentle spring breeze blew, rustling the trees and bringing back with it the smell of pastries and flowers, snapping him back into the present.

Before he could leap down and go about his way, the guests, being entertained by the house owners earlier, exited the house, exchanging their last few words of courtesy

Liu Wei could tell just by looking at their flashy and grand robes that they were nobility, who had never hesitated before flaunting their wealth.

Upon a closer look, he concluded the house belonged to a young, wealthy couple, also nobility.

To most people, this pair seemed like a dream couple. They matched each other perfectly, were wealthy and seemed to love each other a lot.

The guests also appeared to hold the same point of view, since they had been showering the couple with endless compliments and praises the moment they had stepped foot out of the guest room.

The wave of compliments also pleased the husband and wife, who humbly downplayed them to seem modest.

Despite their display of affection, Liu Wei felt like something wasn't right, so he hung around longer to find out.

A second after the guests had stepped foot out of the house and the doors had been closed, a loud smack echoed through the air followed which was followed by a thud

The woman that had been tightly held by her husband earlier, was now on the floor, a hand covering her swollen cheek

"DIDN'T I TELL YOU TO TAKE OUT THE OTHER TEA SET YOU BITCH???" the man bellowed.

"WHY THE FUCK CAN'T YOU DO ANYTHING RIGHT?!?!"

The woman didn't look very surprised. She seemed used to it.

Her dull eyes spoke volumes as she sat there, soullessly covering her cheek, staring at the ground with teary eyes

The man huffed and raised his hand once more, wanting to hit the helpless woman harder this time in order to blow off some steam, but was stopped mid-air.

"WHO THE FUCK DARE- "

He was stopped mid-sentence by a figure clad in black fashionable robes, with facial features that looked like they had been carved out of jade. Judging by the aura of the man gripping his wrist, he could tell that the figure in front of him was not somebody he could afford to offend.

As soon as the man's eyes met Liu Wei's cold and uninterested gaze, the man soon felt an increasing numbness growing over his body.

Maybe it was the fact that Liu Wei's domineering aura intimidated him…. or maybe it was the acupoint that Liu Wei had just struck- either way, the man could do nothing but look at Liu Wei.

"You're being too noisy… so I figured you could use some rest "

Liu Wei pretended to pick his ear before flashing a smile. The eerie smile on its own was enough to send chills down someone's spine yet, a crisp popping sound soon followed it.

Suddenly, an ear piercing cry echoed throughout the residence

The woman was stunned to see her husband, who had abused her for as long as she could remember, sitting on the ground cowering in fear, cradling his wrist.

She looked up to look at the figure who had just intervened, with mixed emotions. Meanwhile, Liu Wei wiped his hands with a cloth before tossing it away, as if he had stuck his hand into a pile of garbage.

Sensing the woman's gaze on his back, he turned to her.

"I didn't hurt him… I just dislocated his wrist," he explained with solemnity, before kicking the man one last time.

"Don't worry," he reassured the woman

"I have seen nothing dirtier than you, fucking loser" Liu Wei humiliated the man one last time before walking out of the house in an unhurried manner, hands clasped behind his back.

"Pfft, what a match made in heaven", he mocked, rolling his eyes at what had just happened.

The house was somewhat far from the heart of Qing he city, away from the bustling streets and noise. Thus, the farther Liu Wei walked away from the house, the more crowded the streets became.

The red, auspicious lanterns on either side of the road gently danced with the breeze while the low indistinct chatter of people grew louder with each step that Liu Wei took.

Standing at the opening of the street, Liu Wei regretted leaving the inn. The bright lights gave him a headache and the fake lovers made him want to throw up.

He furrowed his eyebrows and sighed before making his way down the noisy street.

Great achievements were born of great sacrifices, which in Liu Wei's case was making his way down the busy street, drinking at the biggest brothel in Qing he city and finding some entertaining drama on the way.

Thankfully, Liu Wei was a very lucky man and found trouble wherever he went.

As he strolled down the busy street, bumping into couples for the hell of it, a ragged man brushed shoulders with him.

The man that turned around to apologize was one with a lanky figure, unkempt hair and tattered clothes.

Instead of accepting the apology or starting a fight like a normal person, Liu Wei flashed a devilish smile, which disappeared as soon as it appeared.

The man, aware of the deed that he had committed, was filled with mixed emotions at Liu Wei's response- had he just stolen from someone with a screw loose?

Although the thought gave him goosebumps he had no choice but to brush off the feeling.

Just as he turned, stuffing the pouch into his sleeves, intending to treat himself using the money he had just 'earned', a voice sounded beside his ear, as clear as day.

"Thanks for the free money! I'll spend it well"

As the pickpocket heard this, all the color drained from his face. He reached into his sleeve to find nothing but rocks inside the pouch that he had snagged earlier.

He soon realized that not only did he fail to steal the person's pouch, he had also lost his own!

The man had stolen his pouch! He was surprised to see how the tables had turned on him

"STOP!!!! YOU THIEF!!!!" his face flushed with embarrassment as he turned around to chase Liu Wei, who, with a mischievous grin nimbly jumped onto an inn's rooftop and made his way to the brothel in this way instead.

He never liked to blend into the crowd, anyway.
