Chapter 12: Papyrus

"I need to make a better grinder" I say to myself while sitting at my workbench, I know that the casts aren't going to come out perfect, I used the wrong type of material for the mold and I am inexperienced.

I will probably have to shave down alot of metal that came out wonky, but hand grinding is going to take forever, I dont have means to make a fully mechanical grinder but I can make one that is hand cranked, or something like a foot treadle mechanism, like on this old sewing machines.

They are actually quite simple, my grandfather had an old sewing machine that had a treadle pedal, treadle pedals turn the vertical movement of your foot into rotational movement, using a fly wheel.

Its pretty much a rectangle that is on a point on rotation, this rectangle is connected to a a rod or stick that can move freely on a rotation point, this rod then is connected to a rectangle that is also on a rotation point, that rectangle that the rod is attached to has another axle that is connected to a flywheel.

This allows the rod to move in circles which makes the double axle rectangle move in circles when you move your foot up and down on the first rectangle. You then just add a flywheel which is just there to keep constant momentum, it also works to reset the pedal so you can press down with your foot again.

You then just connect the flywheel to whatever you need to have move in circles, and in my case a grinder. I think I will be able to make this, with some Wulfrum rods and wood.

I will have to grind the Wulfrum rods by hand but it will be worth it for that sweet, sweet grinder that, conveniently can be switched out for any other machine you need that should spin.

I will finally be able to get myself a lathe! Gone the days when I carve symmetrical shapes by hand, I will also be able to process logs into actually planks.

I still dont have wood finish sadly, but I will figure that out later, I will just try different types of oil, since I dont actually know how they are made, besides that some are oil based.

"I think its actually time for me to get paper, I think I can make some" now actual paper, I dont have the tools for that, but I think I can make papyrus paper, it is pretty much just strips of a river plant called Papyrus, that have been cross hatched, pressed down, then dried under the dun.

Papyrus can be found pretty much every where that water exists, like ponds or lakes. So I stand up and put on my fur coat and decide to head over to that river I found the other day.

I exist my crafting room, and climb up a tree before starting to move through the tree's as fast as I can, and after a few hours I make it back to the river and I start looking for the plant.

They are quite tall and skinny, with a bunch of leaves at the end of the stem, it takes absolutely no time to find some so I make sure to grab alot, but leave some so they can re populate.

I then throw them into my inventory and start heading back home, I make sure to avoid enemies since I dont need anything from them, and after another few hours I make it back home.

I notice the sun starting to set so I quickly head into my crafting room and pull out some sticks, I dip them in some slime and light them using my still ongoing furnace flame. I usually keep the fire on at all times, except when sleeping.

I do so because I dont want to start a fire every time I want to light something, like right now, I wish I had better means of lighting stuff, but sadly I dont.

Anyway, I place the lit torches in their spaces on the wall, which lights up the room nicely. I sit down at my workbench and pull out all of my reeds.

I first cut off the leaves at the end, I throw them to the side to pick up later, and then I summon a knife and start peeling the green skin layer off in strips, after doing so I put them aside. I could use them for the paper but then the paper will be green and I dont want that.

So I will be using the inside, I then chop the long stalks into smaller pieces, before splitting each piece into strips until I have alot of them. I then wash them in some water, before starting to layer them over each other.

I then start cross hatching the pieces until I have a nice piece of paper, "Ok now I need to weigh them down and then let them dry." I mutter and go place I on the roof of room, I then repeat the process, making as many as I can, each in different shapes and sizes.

I head over to the roof and start placing rocks over the paper to press them, "I have to keep them like this for 3 days, then let them dry for 1, what should I do in that time though?" I question.

Let me know if I get anything wrong, I wanted to be creative with the hand crafting thing and I'm just now figuring out its actually kinda hard to describe the building process, I'm also struggling with the reasons on why the mc knows these things.

I'm also actually worried the story is moving too slow, is boring people and doesn't have alot of that terraria feel to it, when I skip over things I feel like people are going to complain when I dont, I feel people are going to complain, let me know if I'm just being paranoid or not...
