Chapter 97: Closer to the answer or further away from it?

POV: Marshal

I tried to concentrate on work. After asking Elizabeth for coffee, I started to do some paperwork in my office.

Taking the paper with the request from the laboratory, I began to read it... Dr. Newton Geiszler requests 1 ton of Torterra's metal .

"Denied!" I put a stamp on the paper with the word "Denied". This biologist stuck on this metal. Most likely, he asks for this metal in order to make furniture from it in his room.

I finished my coffee and continued to work. My head hurt, as always, but concentrating on work, I managed not to pay attention to it.

Taking the next request in my hands, I put my signature there. It was Mr. Yancy's request to transfer a few more workers to work at the new plant.

Putting the document aside, I noticed my cup of coffee on the table. I think I finished my coffee, but there was still half in the cup. Surprisingly, I did not argue. I finished my coffee again.

The next request was from our "prison". It turns out that the two girls who piloted one of the Hunters that attacked Torterra are asking to be given the chance to be pilots and work to protect humanity.

Usually these requests are not made in writing, but I asked Elizabeth to write it all down on paper or give it to me on a tablet if I wasn't there.

I was surprised at this request. They somehow passed him through the prison guards to me. I don't know what to do with it. The girls are young and were taken from an orphanage for the Jaeger program, but it turned out to be a hoax, so in theory I could take them as pilots. They performed quite well in combat. I need to think about it.

I put the paper on the other side of the table and noticed again that the coffee cup was not empty. She was full. I touched the cup to make sure I wasn't asleep. The cup was cold.

'It's happening again! Maybe I really need to get off base and rest.' I massaged my temples and continued working.

This time it wasn't a document asking for my signature, but important information that Elizabeth thought I needed to read. It was about the UN decision regarding the "Wall of Life". Finally, the right decision was made and now walls will be built only between big cities and the ocean. It was a compromise that everyone agreed to.

I taking the following piece of paper, in which there was a request for increased funding for the Jasper Schoenfeld laboratory. His project to create a computer capable of drifting on its own was go on. This computer will able to save all the information from a person's brain and transfer it to anyone. This was undoubtedly the next step in the development of humanity after the creation of the first Jaeger.

Without thinking, I signed the document and put it aside until the rest. As usual I turned my attention to the coffee cup and this time the cup was empty. I took her in my hand. The cup was hot, as if boiling water had been poured into it, but there was no coffee in it.

'I've had enough!'

"Elizabeth, I'm going to the Torterra`s  island. I will be gone for a few days. You know what to do." Pressing a button on the communicator, I told the secretary.

"Yes sir. I will send all the documents for work to you on the tablet." The secretary answered.

"Thank you."

After quickly packing, I went to the hangar and asked one of the pilots to take me to the island. I could fly myself, but I didn't trust myself for the last week. It was very dangerous to fly in such a condition.

Sitting in the seat of the co-pilot, I buckled up. My pilot was not known to me. I have seen him several times, but I did not know his name. I don't deal with every case on the base and there were many employees with whom I never even spoke.

"Nice to meet you, Sir. I will be happy to take you to your destination. Now I just read the instructions for the plane, and we will be on the island immediately." I looked at my pilot who was smiling at me. He wanted to continue joking, but when he saw my emotionless face, he stopped immediately.

GGRRRRR

Our plane buzzed and we started to take off. The pilot smoothly controlled and gained altitude. We had to fly out of a hole in the ceiling and the pilot was pushing various buttons and trying to be careful.

I also looked at the top. At first I was shocked and silent, but then I quickly took action.

"What are you doing?! We're going to crash!" I took the pilot by the shoulder and shook him. Our plane flew to the exit, but it did not hit the hole. If we continue to gain altitude, we will hit the ceiling with the wing.

"WHAT…?" The pilot was disoriented and staring into space as if his brain had shut down.

I quickly switched the controls from him to the co-pilot's and steered our plane in the right direction, avoiding a collision.

"What's wrong with you?" I asked the pilot.

"I don't know... My head hurts so much... I'm sorry, sir! This will not happen again."

His answer alarmed me. What I thought was just my problem has now turned into something bigger. Another bad feeling added to my worries about my mental health. Unfortunately, I didn't have the answers, but I had to find them.

The first person I had to talk to was Dr. Newton, who has been on the island for a week researching Ruby. The doctor who examined me this morning found nothing out of the ordinary, so Dr. Newton was my next option, but this time it wasn't just me.

The plane roared as we took off from the base. When we were over the ocean, my headache subsided. Maybe a change of scenery is really beneficial, and maybe there is something on the base that affects the mind. Judging by the fact that the pilot almost killed us, this was the second reason.

Another reason to see Dr. Newton. We need to know what affects the mind and how. Could this be a previously unknown effect of Torterra's metal, or is this yet another Kaiju attack we don't even know about…

A few hours later we were already on the island.

POV: General

'It's so exciting. Yes! This is it!' thought Dr. Newton as he worked in a small laboratory on the island.

The island was very lively as always. The Titan's huge house was not empty. Many people worked there and these people were already used to the huge space of the room.

On one of the walls, opposite the entrance, was an old jet pack. In the corner below him, people had built a building where the engineers worked, and Dr. Newton was now in that building.

On the opposite wall, right next to the entrance, was another jet pack. It was larger and with a more complex design. It was built for space flight. He was almost ready, but there were still many people around him. There were so many different cars and devices in the room that maybe Torterra wouldn't have found a place to stand in his house.

Ruby was lying under another wall. There was plenty of food around her and she lazily and slowly ate the fruits and salads that people brought her. Fortunately, she was getting better every day. And soon she will be able to walk as before. Her whole body was wrapped and the smell of various medicines had been nagging at Ruby since she woke up.

Mr. Newton was sitting in the laboratory looking at his computer monitor and reading something. When he finished reading, he turned and looked into the microscope.

"I'm a genius! NO! It's brilliant on its own, and I just invented it! HA HA"

"Mr. Pentecost has arrived! Will you tell him about your research?" The laboratory assistant told him. He was an ordinary guy who helped with research.

"Of course I will tell you! It will surprise him!" Dr. Newton said with a smile. He did not yet have any outstanding results, but the idea itself was revolutionary. He hoped that the Marshal would support him.

On the other side of the island, Marshall finally landed on the island and exited the plane. His headache was completely gone and he breathed in the fresh sea air and exhaled with relief. For a moment he forgot all his problems and enjoyed the moment.

After looking around, he headed inside this structure, which was more like a mountain in size. On the way, people greeted him and did not show any strange activity, as it was at the base. It became obvious to him that something was wrong at the base and everything was fine with his head. He smiled and went to meet Ruby first.

"Good afternoon Mr. Pentecost."

"Good afternoon, Miss Yun. What you do?"

When Marshal approached the giant animal that was chewing a lot of greens, a young journalist from Korea greeted him. She was sitting on a folding chair next to Ruby with a large tablet in her hands.

"I'm trying to teach Ruby to understand human language. Look! Ruby! Nod your head!"

Yun stood in front of Ruby and asked her to nod, but the turtle just looked at her with half closed eyes and blinked. She blinked very slowly.

"Great interaction Miss Yun. You have a talent for training." Marshall was in a good mood when he didn't have a headache, so he joked.

"Actually, she is very smart. I think talking about training is very insulting to her."

"Are you saying that Ruby is as smart as Torterra?"

"Unfortunately no. But if you compare her with animals, she is many times smarter than them. The fact that Ruby is ignoring me right now just proves her intelligence. She makes a decision and now she says that I've become annoying to her. It's so much fun!" Yun was beaming with joy. She had a lot of fun talking to Ruby and making videos about her.

While they were talking, Ruby pulled her neck out of her shell and brought her head closer to Marshall's.

"She was interested in you. You can touch it. She doesn't bite." Yun noticed Ruby's interest in Marshall.

"This is an amazing creature. Maybe after all the trouble Torterra's DNA research brought, humans were able to do some good by creating Ruby," Marshall said, stroking Ruby's chin. Her head was so big that she could swallow Marshall whole.

Ruby hummed with pleasure as she was stroked and sniffed Marshall to remember his scent. Even though she experienced a lot of pain from people, she did not change her character. It was thanks to the time spent with Torterra. As they traveled, she felt everything in the Titan's heart. Although he didn't tell her anything about it, she saw how he bypassed fields and towns to avoid harming people. But she also knew that he treated people with caution, judging each one individually.

Before, Ruby couldn't communicate with anyone. Even beings that looked like her didn't understand her, but when Torterra freed her from the lab, he could know what was in her heart. For this reason, she tried to do everything that he did.
