Chapter 3: Doomsday I

No one seemed to disagree with his advice, so he continued, "As for your secondary priority, I'd say it depends on your abilities."
"Abilities?"
"Hm?" Silver raised a brow, not too surprised though, "Those who have an ability, raise your hand please."
Two. Only two individuals raised their hands, one of the guards Sam and the head researcher of the second lab, Natalia.
Silver narrowed his eyes, seemingly in deep thought, "So not everyone can awaken an ability. In fact, the chances are 1 or 2 out of 10."
"Y-you all awakened abilities?" One of the researchers asked with a bit of shock.
"What abilities did you awaken?" Another asked with curiosity and envy, sentiments shared by pretty much everyone. Hell, even Natalia was curious about what ability Silver has awakened.
"Don't feel like you have to tell anyone your ability, or rather, it's best to keep it a secret for now," Silver advised before standing up, tracing his eyes about, pausing a bit on one of the researchers standing at the back.
"Now, let's talk about how we can fight off against the Doomsday," Silver stated loudly, "We have two options, we wait, wait for the fog to dissipate, but doing so means counting on the fog dissipating which while I'm sure it will happen, I'm not totally certain about."
"I-I'm definitely not waiting," Not just one but many were resistant to such an option for every minute spent waiting might just be the difference between life and death for their families.
"So let's talk about the second option... Time is of the essence because others will certainly think like us and look for supplies as fast as possible, and if we wait for too long, we might lose out on some opportunities.
So here is how it's going to be done. Those of you who have families you want to pick up will set out with me in an hour. Before that, we'll establish a travel route, the most efficient way to do the job while getting resources along the way."
And as he continued to explain his plan, their eyes couldn't help but brighten, although they still had doubt, "But boss, how would we see in the fog?"
"Just follow after me... I can see in the fog," Silver stated, not bothering with giving much of an explanation, "Natalia, Sam, come here."
While the rest of the staff were discussing the travel route among themselves, Silver pulled the two awakeners to a quiet corner before gently asking, "We'll be the main fighting force, so do you mind telling me your abilities? Just a general outline would do."
"My ability doesn't seem to be too special. It's called Supernatural Leap, and it made my legs significantly stronger, allowing me to leap much higher than normal humans, I think?" Sam explained, still unsure about his ability as he still hasn't tried it yet.
"Oh?" Silver let out a chuckle before shaking his head, "You're certainly mistaken. That sounds very special. Just the name should tell you that, but I guess our abilities grow with us, maybe even able to evolve?"
"I think so too," Natalia nodded, finally letting out a bright smile even on the face of Doomsday, "My ability is to manifest and manipulate strings. It's named String manipulation."
"That... Sounds very special," Silver narrowed his eyes, eyeing her strangely, "Why are you so happy though?"
"Hm? Are you not? There is hope! We can cure your cancer, and this could be our playground. It could..." Natalia happily replied.
"Okay, stop," Silver simply had to stop her lest she says something too crazy. She might be a little bit too crazy but perhaps that's why he saw her as a gem awaiting careful carving, "And you're right, I'm happy."
He nodded with a smile, ignoring Sam's weirded out look. Instead, he brought out his phone, opened his notebook, and wrote something before showing it to Natalia.
[Larry is also an awakener, and his ability is related to hearing. He heard everything we said]
"Oh? I'm glad then," Natalia acted as if nothing happened as she also brought out her phone and wrote a response.
[But why would he hide it? Is he dumb? His ability doesn't seem to be too special either]
"Well, let's get to work then," Silver responded while writing something else entirely.
[Perhaps he has a mental deficiency, but you know how I do things... No second chances]
Silver then walked away, and Natalia followed, not showing any surprise. She's been working alongside him the longest, and they went through a lot together, the dark side of society. You come across such things when you're rich or influential enough.
And unfortunately, Larry showed a tendency Silver couldn't allow to be by him amidst Doomsday. I would've been fine if he just didn't want to tell his exact ability but he hid that he has an ability in the first place.
Numerous plans were already swimming across Silver's now even brighter mind, and none of them involve or require someone with such character and tendency for deceit, no matter how useful their abilities may be.
And his hearing ability, while very useful in these circumstances, it's in no way shape, or form necessary, not with Silver's soul domain, the thing that allowed him to detect Larry's deceit.
Silver kept his domain active at all times, enveloping an area with a diameter of 50 meters around him, shrouding the entire facility and beyond.
As late as when he asked those who have abilities to raise their hands, he noticed a strange reaction from Larry, his domain picking up the tiniest change in his expression, his speeding heartbeat.
Indeed, as he got more and more familiar with his domain, he found that he could see through bodies, akin to using an MRI scanner but much more advanced.
And while talking with Sam and Natalia, he noticed Larry's constantly changing expression, confirming his guess.
'Hah,' Silver let out a breath, barely holding back a laugh, and he really wanted to laugh aloud out of bliss but he held it in.
As Natalia said, the world has turned into a playground, but the question remains, will he be the one to emerge victorious?
'Or rather? Do I want to emerge victorious?' Silver had to wonder for the more he thought about the announcement, the more unsettling it became.
'It almost feels like those who will emerge victorious would've won the battle but lost the war,' He mused in his mind, his eerie black eyes becoming bright at an interesting thought, 'Do I even want to win the game or do I want to break it.'
He threw those thoughts aside for the moment and started preparing, bringing out his pistol from his office, and a white duffel bag which he filled with all kinds of necessities, mostly research stuff, such as vials, syringes, and some sharp knives and other slici... Research tools.
"Remember, stay close, and don't try to act out of line," Silver warned as he rejoined the team by the front gate, "Natalia will hand each of you a string which will always lead in our direction, so make sure to keep up."
There were many ways for them to keep up amidst the fog but the emergence of Natalia's ability made things a hell lot easier, "When the strings fall down, stop the car. When the strings flow up, get out of the car, and don't ask any unnecessary questions regarding how they work."
Not everyone was going with them. There were some whose families live in other states, so they could only pray to god for them, but those who were going couldn't help but nod heavily.
They really couldn't imagine what they would've done otherwise, perhaps just go out there and die.
"And remember, if you want to leave, you can but you better do so before we come back. If you want to stay here, you'll have some work to do. Also, I don't give second chances." Silver's words were rough for a bunch of people who are still adapting to the mysterious Doomsday, but his plans require a lot of manpower, loyal hardworking manpower.
"Now, let's finalize our preparations, and if you have any questions or doubts, share them with us," And preparing they did, reviewing their travel route for a second time among other things.
Soon, the team found their way out of the facility, finding themselves facing nothing but blinding fog, suffocating even, bringing them an eerie sensation despite being adorned in hazmat suits.
Silver got into his Hummer Truck along with Natalia, of course taking the wheel himself because only he can clearly see through the fog with his soul domain.
However, only he felt the clear soothing change in himself as a burst of foreign energy swam through his pale sickly body, slowly changing it from its core. He had just distributed his Awakening points to endurance.
After very careful consideration, endurance was his first choice, especially since his adding it to physique won't help much. His primary form of combat comes from his soul after all.
