Chapter 30: The eyes as a window to the heart.

Pov Elara Celestia:

As I held Kylo's arm in the carriage on the way to the dungeon I thought about the difference in the feelings of the people close to me, Frederick Roman, my fiancé, Luna Lestia, my cousin... and Kylo.

(They are completely different...)

I met my fiancé 2 years ago....

"Hi! I'm Elara Celestia, nice to meet you!" I greeted him briskly when I met him, excited to meet him.

(He will be my husband, the person I will spend the rest of my life with...) were my tender thoughts at that moment.

He was a boy of the same height as me, with beautiful blue hair and eyes of the same color.

"Hello," he said with a cold voice, and his face also reflected that coldness, he didn't show any expression.

I can't deny that his cold voice and his inexpressiveness puzzled me at that moment, but then I thought....

(Maybe he's nervous), which was understandable in that situation.

As I recall, that day the families of the two of us were gathered in the study of my father, the king. According to royal family tradition, all the principal members of the families were to be present at that time.

Among those present were my father, the king, my mother, the queen, and my older sister, the first princess.

For his part, his father, and mother were also present. With this in mind, I suppose it was normal for him to be nervous.

Besides, I was talking to a beauty like me. Despite my tender age, according to the maids and my sister, my appearance was very adorable and charming, so getting engaged to someone like me probably left him speechless.

But it turned out to be a mistake.

We had regular meetings every month to strengthen our bond, following established traditions.

I remember back then I was trying so hard to at least get a smile out of him, but I couldn't.

"Hey, look at that bird, isn't it cute?" I showed him a beautiful bluebird, which was my favorite pet at the time. I loved it so much.

What was his reaction?

"Aha," he looked at the bird in my hands and just uttered that word, without changing his expression in the slightest.

(Aha...)

I won't deny that I felt a little insulted, but with a lot of patience, I remembered that maybe some people had different tastes or just didn't like nice things.

"Hey Fred, shall we play on the seesaw?", I said as I sat on one end of the seesaw.

It was my favorite game in the park, and I hoped I could wring some expression out of him, whether it was joy or even fear. I was content to see something other than his bored, cold expression.

His reaction was.

"Hmm" he frowned a little and sat on the opposite side of the seesaw.

That day was so boring that I lost interest in the seesaw.

About 5 months went by, which translates to 5 visits from Frederick, and in all my attempts to remove that stupid expression from his face failed.

I won't deny that I started to get really bored during those times. Being a princess, I couldn't go to a public park and play with kids my age.

My life back then was reduced to waking up, completing my daily classes, contemplating the scenery and playing alone, then sleeping and starting the next day.

Occasionally, my older sister would come over to play with me, but since the crown princess had her homework, most of the time I was alone.

My parents? They had even more responsibilities than my sister, so I only saw them during dinner.

The days when I was supposed to have fun were the days when my fiancé visited me, but instead, they were the most boring and tedious days.

Until one day my cousin, Luna Lestia, arrived.

"You have to be nice to her, she just lost her mother, and she's probably very sad."

Those were my mother's words, moments before I met my cousin.

According to her, Aunt Leia, a woman she remembered for bringing delicious sweets from time to time, had died of a strange illness that attacked her without warning.

Duke Lestia had no time to spend with Luna, and her older brother…well, he wasn't a very reliable person.

My mother, a very perceptive woman, noticed that I was dying of boredom and proposed to Duke Lestia to raise Luna in the royal castle together with me. He accepted without delay and sent his daughter immediately.

I felt very sorry for Luna, especially since I remembered that Aunt Leia was a very kind and loving person.

"Don't worry, mother. I'll make sure she feels welcome," I said with determination.

Later that day, Luna arrived.

She was a girl with short white hair, different from the characteristic golden hair of Celestia's descendants. Her eyes were a deep blue and her beautiful face was completely expressionless, although I could perceive some subtle tones of sadness in her gaze.

"Hi, I'm Elara, your cousin. Nice to meet you," I greeted her briskly, the same way I did the first time I met my fiancé.

She looked at me for a moment before responding.

"Hello," her expression didn't change in the slightest, but her voice wasn't cold nor did it generate rejection from me.

(Again...) I felt that Luna and my fiancé were very similar.

And so a whole month went by.

During that time, I learned a lot about my cousin's and my fiancé's behavior. Although they were both expressionless, Luna didn't give me the feeling of rejection that Frederick did.

How could I put it? I felt that Luna enjoyed my presence, unlike Frederick, who seemed to be doing his duty and simply didn't care about anything else.

The difference was noticeable when I showed Luna my bluebird.

She said nothing, but stroked her little head gently and warmly. Even in her deep blue eyes, I could see them light up with a mixture of curiosity and tenderness.

Thanks to that bluebird, my bond with Luna improved and her eyes no longer reflected her usual sadness.

Another month passed, and when I went to visit my bluebird to show it to Luna, I found it lying with its paws in the air.

He was dead.

Sadness invaded me and a tear escaped, but I remembered that that day was when my fiancé was coming. I tried to be strong and repressed that feeling, I didn't want him to see me sad.

"Hello…" I greeted him without energy, unlike other times when I always greeted him with a smile.

"Hi," but he didn't notice.

I spent the day with him, but he didn't notice my mood, not when I didn't feel like eating dessert, not when I didn't want to play, not even when I watched the birds in the garden.

He didn't notice my mood, as if he didn't give a damn....

"Goodbye."

"Goodbye."

That's how he left, without even noticing my state, the state of his future wife....

It was disappointing.

After seeing him off, I went straight to my bed to cry, but I was interrupted before entering my room.

It was Luna, who had two cakes in her hands and was offering me one. I wanted to refuse, but when she insisted, I remembered that she had recently gone through the same thing.

(I should take it.)

I ate that cake in tears, and when I finished it, Luna hugged me and patted me on the head. I could see comfort in her expressionless face, more specifically in her blue eyes that shone with understanding.

"You are not alone," she said.

That night I slept with her, and every time I remembered my bluebird and tears threatened to come, I could feel her little pats on my head.
