Chapter 21: You Are The One Who Killed Him

"How is Jun's injury?" Fraser asked.

"His fever had subdued, but he needs several days to heal. He can't move his left shoulder for the next two weeks," the physician said. He nodded but looked at the nervous face of the old man.

"Is there anything else?" Fraser asked.

"T- The queen injured her ankle. Her maid told me she requires treatment," he stuttered.

Fraser's heart thumped with rage. He glared at the old shivering man and went away. He thought something bad related to Jun's injury, never expecting the queen to hurt herself.

What did it matter to him if that woman was well or not? Every time he heard her name, he would think of his dying father.

The misery he lived every day while getting hold of himself not to go to her and throw her outside the palace grew day by day. And that happened because of one person, his father.

Fraser went in the opposite direction he was supposed to go. Looking at the chamber's door, he stood outside, his eyelashes fluttered. Going inside, he peeked at the painting of the previous kings and queens hanging on the wall from the first king to him. What differed was that the portrait beside its one was covered with a black sheet.

Staring at the black painting, his memories drifted to over three years ago.

"Your Majesty, you asked for my presence," Fraser greeted his father resting in bed. His lips were deadly pale. His wrinkled face lost its colour.

His father gazed at him with disdain. "I sent a messenger to the Valian kingdom asking them to have a truce," the king managed to say between his coughs.

Fraser was enraged. "Why! We are taking them down. They suffered great losses compared to us. Our troupes will succeed in defeating theirs in a few months."

"I do not trust your judgment. Did you not say the same thing one year ago? And what happened after? Your brother died. You are the one who killed him. Useless thing."

Fraser remained motionless, his face devoid of any emotion. It was no surprise to him to be treated this way, as his father had always made it clear that he did not care for him. From a young age, Fraser had learned to keep his distance and never expect affection from his father, instead pressing a figurative rock to his chest as a shield.

"You and your mother have brought nothing but misfortune upon me. You have taken everything that I held dear, including the lives of my three children and my beloved queen. However, do not think that I will allow you to take my place as king and enjoy the spoils of my throne alongside your mother. I have a special surprise in store for you," chuckled the king.

"I asked King Kalian to make his sister your queen, and he agreed. But didn't you say you despised them? Now you'll experience what it's like to share a bed with someone you hate, and you will see how you can love your children."

Fraser closed his eyes. His father's laughter broke his already broken heart to pieces. The last word he said echoed in his head. For fear of repeating what he lived in his childhood. He ignored that woman who became his queen.

They were combined unwillingly, and they would be strangers all their life. Fraser passed by his Father's painting, frowned and strode away. His big brother resembled their father, but their attitude was the opposite.

No one cared about him more than what Estevan did. Even his mother didn't love him. She was obsessed with making him the new king and encouraged him to fight for the throne, but he didn't. He chose a war path. That was the only method, he could unleash the rage buried in him.

Heading to the healing room, he went in. The sour smell of the cabin made his nose twitch. His friends were injured, so he went to visit them.

"Can't you be gentler with the punishment?" Hank said, displeased like a wronged boy. He lay on his abdomen. The physician covered his back with a thick white bandage.

"You deserve more," Jun said, groaning when he tried to move his body. "If something went wrong, the arrow would have pierced the king in the heart."

"What would I do if that mouse fired the arrow without waiting for my signal?" Hank murmured, shifting his gaze to the wall.

Fraser moved the chair to the middle and sat.

"Your Majesty, don't you find it more suspicious? How can a lady like her know how to shoot?" Jun asked.

Fraser pondered for a while. As a Baron's daughter, she lived a carefree life in her kingdom. The report never mentioned that she practised fighting techniques. The Valian law forbade women from enrolling on the military so there was no need for her to learn.

"Her skills are far above the ground. She told me she didn't practice for years, but one time, she hit the target," Hank turned his head and said.

"Is she hiding her skills to plan for something?" Fraser asked.

"Maybe," Jun said.

'Is she the spy they were searching for? That probably was the case.' A weak woman worked beside the silent queen.

The spies he put in the queen's headquarters had seen nothing suspicious the past three years. Besides, the majority were fired, or sent out for different reasons. The Queen wasn't a simple person. She moved between her room and the garden without socializing with anyone outside or inside.

'Did she use her maid instead of her? The spies would focus more on that woman but what about the maids?'

He spent years planning for revenge, but his long-term plan got ruined. When they first met the maid, he was dealing with a traitor who died from the poison originating from that filthy kingdom.

'All of that isn't a coincidence, is it?'

"Look who is talking? A baffling man risks himself and wants to be killed. Wake up, Hank. We're not at the battle anymore," Jun said, laughing. Fraser woke up from his trance.

Hank raised his body, making the white bandage turn red. "Why are you talking to your superior like that?"

"Superior ******, you are suspended from your post for a month. I will take care of the knights from now on," Jun snickered.

"With one hand? You are on sickness leave too, you *******" Hank roared.

Fraser rubbed his aching forehead. "Stop the banter!" Fraser yelled. They loved to fight with each other since they were young recruits in one camp. "I already picked someone else to take Hank's post."

"Who?" they asked.

"Matilda."

Hank laughed loudly. "Why don't you laugh like earlier, Jun. You'll be reunited with your wife."

Fraser smiled, left the two of them and walked to his quarter.
