Chapter 49: Going To The Capital - Backstory (3)

Summer was about to end, and Mr Eferhon's grandson was returning to the capital soon. After they bickered a few months back, their relationship got better. They spent most of her time with Danny training, hunting and heading to the market to sell meats and her mother's handcrafted.

He told her about the city and other exciting things. He narrated how majestic the castle was. Freya listened carefully to his stories. The excitement to see the capital through her own eyes increased, but the warning from her mother disappointed her every time.

"So you're returning tomorrow?" she asked quite sad, about her only friend's departure. Danny hummed. His family was an influential one in the kingdom. Her mother taught her about the noble society and the dire situation the kingdom swam into.

The war extended more than expected as it entered its sixtieth summer. The losses were huge. The ships stopping in the town port decreased in the last years.

"Can I go with you," Freya murmured.

Danny paled. "Will your mother allow you?" he asked, seeing the sparkle in her eyes. "No! If my grandfather knows, he will whip me," he hurriedly said.

Freya pursed her lips. "Stop being cowardly. I will accompany you to watch the capital, then return. Easy!"

"Easy? Because you are not the one who will be beaten," he glared at her. Freya whistled and turned her head displeasingly. "Do not even think of this. The capital is bigger than the town— Wait, Freya, where are you going?"

"I will not talk to you." She walked away, ignoring the shout from Danny.

Time flew by. Freya locked herself in her room, arranged some of her clothes and daily necessities into a bag, and hid it under the bed.

She had dinner, talked to her mother for a long time and hugged her. "Why are you behaving like a little girl?" her mother teased.

"I will stay a little girl in your eyes forever," she said and then kissed her mother's cheeks.

"If anyone sees you, they will think you are leaving," her mother joked. Freya lowered her head. Feeling guilty for hiding her departure, she would take a look and return.

"Good night, Mom," she said, heading to her room. Freya didn't get a wink of sleep; she sat up, writing a letter to her mother. "I apologize mother. I will be back soon," she murmured, putting the letter on the bedside table, patting her mother's hand gently, afraid of waking her up, she went outside, holding her bag.

Freya waited beside Mr Eferhon's mansion until the carriage parked in front of the house. She sneaked inside and hid under the sitting place. For someone short and slim, the place fitted her. Tired from all the running and the lack of sleep, she closed her eyes and drifted into a deep slumber.

"AH," she shouted as her head bumped into something.

"Come out," Danny's voice transmitted into her place. Freya rubbed her head as the sheet covering the sitting place was removed.

"Y- You, why are you here?" he asked.

Freya smiled. "Good morning," she said and found a comfortable position to sit.

"You are unbelievable!" he said, shaking his head. "I told you I will not take you, but you sneaked into the carriage by yourself. I will let the coachman go back," He sat opposite her, puffing his cheeks. Then he rose.

"Stop that, I will keep you company through your long journey," she stopped him, trying to get some sense into Danny's head. They stared at each other for a while, and then he blinked.

Shifting his gaze away, he said, "I will let you travel with me."

Freya squealed from happiness. The two of them chatted about the long period they spent on their travels. Twenty days and she was trapped inside the carriage. They stopped by three inns, but she stayed inside while Danny slept in one of the rooms.

Freya looked at the bustling streets through the carriage window. People wear fancy clothes, stores and well-constructed ways. Huge mansion printed with white generally. The designs were fancier than the wooden houses in their town.

'It is a great idea coming here,' she thought.

As they stopped beside the mansion, they dropped from the carriage, disguising one of the servants working under Danny.

Freya gasped when she saw the castle-like house. 'This is huge!' as they entered, they took a long period to arrive at the entrance of the house. A well-craved white wooden door. Pillars as high as trees. And the interior of the house was shining, expensive and vast.

Freya lived with the other servant. Danny came to meet her and took her outside. Every day, she spent them in utter joy.

Knowing that today was the last in the capital, Freya and Danny strolled for a long time.

"Wait here, I will be back. Do not move from here," Danny said, then went away to talk with his friends.

Freya waited, feeling bored. "Young boy, did you see a cat like this?" a young girl said, showing her a painting of a brown cat. Freya shook her head, seeing the girl's disappointed face; she offered to look for the cat.

As they searched the surrounding, the little girl named, Beatrice, cried. They went further, asking the people.

"Look, my cat is over there," Beatrice yelled, running to the road.

"Wait," Freya shouted, running behind. One carriage dashed over in their direction, Freya threw the girl to a safe place, stopping in front of two running horses. The distance between them lowered, Freya's heart thumped and her feet froze in their place.

The horses stopped, raising their front legs higher. Their sounds shook her heart. Her legs trembled as she fell on the hard ground.

"Who dares to stop in the middle of the road when the king is passing?" a cold voice sent shivers down her body.

That was the beginning of a life filled with sadness, regrets, and cries.
