Chapter 18: Collapsing Bridge

Since the fire didn't lure my attackers out, I needed to try something that would require breaking the reality laws a bit more. After considering different options, I settled for collapsing a bridge. There were plenty of them in the city, and I didn't really need them to move around anyway.

Of course, that was the work for the next day. First, I went to one of the apartments I had keys to. There was someone living there at present, but I couldn't be bothered to look for a different place. I just killed them and took a nap. I needed all the sleep I could get while I was still relatively safe.

Moreover, destroying bridges was much better done during rush hours, when more people would get involved. Even if that meant the task would get significantly harder.

And so I picked the time when people were coming back home from work and all the lanes were filled with traffic. On top of that, my first bridge of choice was one of the major ones in the city, which made it particularly crowded.

I stood on the pedestrian lane right in the middle of the bridge.

How was the collapse done in that movie again?

If I remember correctly, it started with a few of the suspension cables breaking loose and cracks in the surface appearing, caused by some ongoing construction work. The bridge I was about to destroy had a far more complex design, but that didn't mean I couldn't use a similar method.

I raised my hand high. A few people passing by gave me weird looks, but I ignored them and began severing the cables one by one, breaking them away from the upper side of the construction. Suddenly loose, they smashed down on the road with a snap, crushing the cars, immediately resulting in multiple casualties.

For a few seconds, there wasn't much of a reaction from the crowds. People seemed to be frozen in shock, staring at the scene in disbelief. I guess none of them would have expected that such an iconic bridge will suddenly start falling apart.

The initial confusion didn't last long. Soon everyone was running away, trying to get out of the bridge as quickly as possible. Everything fell into a complete sea of chaos. Instead of evacuating properly, they were pushing against each other, hindering their escape. Out of panic, some even forgot to get out of their cars and tried to drive away, even though all the lanes were completely blocked, crashing into others as a result.

I couldn't help but chuckle. People were so ridiculous. If they could only remain more level-headed, they would have much higher chances of survival. But they were helpless, screaming and running in a frenzy.

I couldn't relate to them at all. If I were even half as useless, I would have never been able to live this long.

Not interrupting my work with the suspension cables, I stretched out my left hand above the ground. I needed to start breaking apart the surface.

Soon, the cars from the upper deck started falling down. I continued creating more cracks in the surface, while destroying the bottom part of the structure.

It was easier said than done. While in theory I knew what to do, implementing it in practice was quite difficult. This world was still way too stable, making my ability to break the reality laws slightly compromised.

It was taking a bit too long. The area around me was completely deserted by now.

Well, ultimately the number of casualties didn't matter. It's not like I needed to exterminate all the humanity for the world to be destroyed. Moreover, at this point in time, my main aim was to lure out the snipers.

Feeling the ground underneath my feet crumble, I jumped up and landed on one of the cables connecting the upper parts of the structure of the bridge. It was slightly loose, swinging in the wind, but I was still able to maintain my balance. I left it mostly intact, so that I could leisurely walk back to the land.

As I walked on the cable, I noticed quite a few people who still haven't managed to evacuate. They were crying and desperately clinging to the parts of the bridge that seemed the most secure, probably hoping someone will come to their rescue.

I flicked my wrist, smashing them with some of the loose suspension cables and ending their suffering.

If they couldn't save themselves on their own, then they only had themselves to blame. They had more than enough time to escape.

I caused enough damage that the bridge kept collapsing further on its own. My work here was done, but still nothing happened.

Well, there was no rush. It was still early, I could just make a few more bridges collapse today, and then figure out something else.

However, there was no need for that in the end. As I got close to the end of the bridge, I felt that unsettling feeling again, and soon bullets started coming my way.

I quickly glanced around and located the source. They were shot from the top of one of the buildings nearby.

I turned around and sprinted all the way back to the other side of the river. The bridge was over a mile long, and I was not quite able to comfortably jump such a distance just yet, so I had no choice but to run on the cable, avoiding the bullets.

As soon as I reached the shore, I found a cover and took out a drone from my bag.

It would be stupid of me to try to get to the sniper's location. After all, I tried it several times before and it didn't work out too well. Undoubtedly he would be gone by the time I reached him.

But I already had a new strategy prepared to try to deal with them. And learning from my mistakes, this time, my main priority was to knock the sniper out as soon as possible.
