Chapter 23: The Invisible Climax in the Dust
With incredible speed, Nacht appeared in front of Musclehead who was doing his best to shield himself from the debris.
"Do you plan on dying together, you crazy bastard?!" Musclehead shouted in anger as he saw Nacht who suddenly kicked his leg. As Nacht's leg was about to make contact, a spike appeared on it, easily penetrating through Musclehead's leg and creating a small hole in it.
Musclehead responded in kind, he punched at Nacht and activated his gauntlet, right when he hit Nacht, a shockwave took place, blasting Nacht away, but it only moved him some 30cm back as he had created a shield behind him that stopped him in his tracks.
Slamming against the shield in order to not be blown away hurt Nacht, but he didn't care.
He quickly utilized his ability, forming multiple weapons that attacked Musclehead from all sides before lunging at him again, only being stopped by some debris that had fallen down.
Upon glancing up, Nacht quickly dispelled all the things he had created with his ability before once again creating the half-dome around his body. The debris fell, creating an incredibly large cloud of dust, as well as destroying a solid part of the city.
Nacht had created items that acted like explosives, and upon activating them, the 14 buildings he had planted them in all came crashing down.
Debris fell and fell, and continued falling, making it impossible for me to see anything. Some of the cameras had also fallen down and were destroyed as they were connected to the buildings that had turned into debris.
'Dammit, that bastard took a big risk, I just hope he hasn't died.' I thought as I looked at the screen.
I couldn't hear anything as the sound of the debris falling down made it impossible for me to do so, I couldn't see even from the video that was from Nacht's perspective as the dust made that impossible as well.
Suddenly, I could hear some groans, as well as what seemed to be the sounds of a battle, but nothing showed up on my screen. I continued staring, and from the other cameras that were still working, I could see some flashes coming out of the cloud of dust.
Red flashes, which was the same color as Nacht's ability.
I was also able to see the cloud of dust moving from time to time, some parts seemingly being blown away, and some debris being launched out of the dust.
It continued for a good minute, and the cloud of dust started settling, but it was still impossible to see a thing.
Oh, I spoke too soon, some flashes were visible once again.
And some debris flying out of the cloud, and there's some more dust being blown away, oh, oh, oh, is that a freaking arm that flew out?!
What the hell, how can't I see a thing from the camera that is on Nacht?
I waited and waited, and patiently waited for what seemed to be hours, but only 2 more minutes passed, and I was finally able to see some figures through the thinned-out dust.
But I was only able to see two figures.
The camera that was on Nacht was not functioning properly for some reason, all I could see was darkness.
As the dust settled further, I was able to see a shocking sight.
Two long pieces of rebar had been stabbed through the ground, and two bodies were placed on the rebar, well, they had been penetrated through the chest and had been left to hang there in a weird manner.
The man in the suit had his right arm cut off from the shoulder down, and half of his face was smashed in while Musclehead's body was full of cuts, his skin-tight suit was ripped and cut, and one could even see the place between his legs as it was on full display, with a piece missing though.
"Whatcha think of that masterpiece?" I suddenly heard Nacht's voice, and lo and behold, the camera that had been on him suddenly worked again, well, instead of saying it worked again, I should say that Nacht had finally turned it as it was seemingly being hugged by him previously, with the camera being right up against his body, making it impossible for me to see a thing.
"I kind of forgot about it, I only picked it up since you weren't answering me this whole time, which was when I realized that I had forgotten the camera back at where I was standing, luckily it was still ok."
Nacht said with a smile as he placed the camera in front of him, which was when I was finally able to see him and the state he was currently in.
"Fcking hell Nacht, what the hell did you do?!" I shouted uncontrollably, but how couldn't I?
The suit Nacht wore was almost completely gone, his right hand, which had previously been hit by the ray, had a large gashing across it, running from the elbow down. One could easily see the bones, and the muscle tissue seemed to be cleanly cut as well, some skin was even hanging down from the arm.
His left arm was also not good, the hand was there, but his fingers were broken, all five of them. A chunk of his shoulder was gone, cleanly cut, and blood was coming from his head while a couple of teeth were missing from his mouth. Oh, his jaw is weird as well, it was probably done by Musclehead.
"Even when injured, those two bastards were tough, well, I got injured by some debris as well, so it was a fair fight to be honest," Nacht said as he showed me his stomach, a large bruise was present on it, as well as his back, on which yet another bruise was present.
"That broke some bones, and those two managed to break some more, and even cut some of my flesh and skin, tch, this will take some time to heal."
"Take some time to heal?" I asked him in disbelief.
"I need to contact the agency, we need a healing tank for you, these injuries won't be healed by themselves, hell, I'll see if they can send someone with healing powers as well, tch, this will be expensive, but you just took down two B-grade heroes, that should suffice, oh and –"
"Hell no, I don't need any help!" Nacht said sternly as I stared at him.
"In case you aren't aware, more than half of your body is fcked up man, do you have any idea how bad your current state is?!" I said, well, I yelled at Nacht who scoffed.
"I can heal myself, my powers are enough, I'll just need a couple of days and I'll be good as new."
"Your powers allow you to heal all of that?" I asked with astonishment as Nacht glanced at me.
"Of course, reality manipulation, remember?"
"What kind of reality-manipulating power would it be if it didn't allow me to even heal?"
"That … that doesn't work that way, bro, even such powers have their limits, we call the specter reality-manipulating because it allows for wild stuff, but even those do have their limits, as well as things they specialize in doing, abilities that allow you to do what you have done, and heal, are right there with the best of them."
Dammit, I misdiagnosed his power, it's much more powerful than I thought.
It can be used offensively, defensively, it can be used for support, to create things, and even to heal, that ticks all the boxes, which means his power does not only belong to the reality-manipulating specter but is near the very top of it.
I hit a gold mine with this guy, haven't I?
If he doesn't continue doing suicidal things and properly develops, then hell, I might be able to reach the very top of the agency as his handler, not to mention my missions, I should be able to complete most of them with his help.
"That bastard that has been shooting at me is still alive, but I unfortunately can't go after him right now, even I am not dumb enough to risk my life while in such a state, so this is pretty much it from me," Nacht said as he grabbed the camera.
"I'll talk to you once I get back in the hideout."
"Don't you dare!" I suddenly yelled.
"I'm your handler, I'm not only here to help you plan things and be the middleman with the agency, but I'm also the one that is supposed to help you get out of difficult situations," I said as I started typing on the keyboard as fast as I could.
"Alright, listen now, I got four potential escape routes that should allow you to evade the sniper."
"First one is the most disgusting one, and the cliché one, go through the sewer system."
"Second one is through the streets, which would be a dangerous one normally, but most of the city has evacuated, so the streets are pretty much empty."
"Third one is also through the streets, but a longer route that will take you through multiple alleys, as well as dead ends that you can jump across."
"The fourth one is through multiple buildings if you are still in good enough shape to jump from one building to another."
