Chapter 2: Chapter two

Carey Adkins

The lights in the opposite apartment complex had been blinking for almost an hour now. My eyes were fixated on the closed window whose curtains were not drawn

shut.

"I think he's fucking another one!'' I exclaimed, frustration drowning me as I stared at Alexandria, my best friend.

"You would think with that big head of yours that it's obvious by now,'' she says with a joking tone, glancing up from the book she was reading and setting it down on the bed.

I hit her shoulder playfully, but my attention was still fixated on my neighbor's apartment.

"OMG Carey, is it really that hard for you to march over to his place and talk to him?'' If I was meant to count the number of times that Alexandria told me that, then I would go insane.

My incredibly hot and sexy neighbor is a man I've had my eye on for quite some time.

"You've seen how he looks…"

"And I know how you look…he would be crazy not to have a crush on you.'' She nudged, rising from the bed and moving towards me.

"There has to be a reason why he always puts up a show for you almost every night. He wants you to listen to how good he is. He wants you to be thirsty for him. It's obvious that he likes you Alexandria…"

"And why would he not come to talk to me?''

"With the kind of detail that follows you around? Even a madman would be scared of moving past your bodyguards.''

I roll my eyes and turn away from her. For a second, the noises and sounds of the woman moaning inside his apartment stop abruptly. The lights remain stagnant.

God knows how many times I have pleasured myself at the view and sound of him fucking different women. He's like a dog in heat.

"Well even if he liked me back, it wouldn't matter, because…''

"Because your father is a dangerous man and he has killed all who have come close to you. I've heard that a thousand times, how long will you keep living like a slave?''

Alexandria is the only girl on campus that knows my true identity and the reason why I always have bodyguards around me. The security that my father handed down to me isn't something I could easily negotiate my way out of.

"What exactly are you saying?"

Ever since I knew how to walk, I have come to an understanding that my family's crime reputation is nothing more than a prison for me. My lack of interest in family matters put me in harm's way.

There have been many occasions where I was taken as a means to blackmail and bring my father down.

"Stand up to him, Carey, you can't continue living like this forever.'' My father has wasted no chances in making the men in my life disappear.

"My Father is Frankie Fraser, he is the legendary Bad Frankie. Do you even think I could stand before him and say NO!''

Even the thought of that gives me goosebumps. there isn't a day in my life that goes by without wondering who I would become if I wasn't born into the Adkins Crime Family. Would I have friends? Would I have guys hitting on me? Would I be able to eat random street food? Or simply have a meal without having someone inspect it.

My life is nothing more than a prison. Both physically and mentally.

"Aaahhh…" There is the sound of glass shattering, furniture breaking, and the screams of a woman.

Alexandria and I glance toward my neighbor's house. My heart beats drastically. I have become accustomed to trauma. Uncomfortable and intense situations are braided into my life.

Yet the sound of a gun firing and blood spattering over my neighbor's window cripples me.

"Carey, we have to go..''

A few seconds pass, and there is silence and no movement inside the apartment.

Then suddenly, the shadowy figure of a man moves towards the window. The drawls are open, everything is suddenly clear. Without hesitation, a man, holding a pistol in his glove-covered hand, opens the window and flashes a smile at me,

My heart thuds drastically, and my knees shake as I struggle to stand up. Never have I been this scared of another person. Not even my own father.

The man with the pistol mutters something under his breath, he is addressing a person who is still in the room.

With arms raised over his head, my neighbor makes his way in front of the clear open windows. My lips fall open, and I unconsciously stretch forward my hand in a bid to stop him.

But the weapon fires and the smile on the man's face grows even wide. My neighbor's body falls lifelessly on the floor.

Suddenly, my bedroom door is broken, Taylor, the head of my security, enters, weapon already drawn and aiming towards any possible dangers.

With no fear or hesitation, the man with the pistol points at me smiles and whispers the words that will forever nurse my nightmares.

"I'm coming for you.''

"Carrey, move!'' Taylor shouted, aiming his weapon toward the opposite window. I ducked, bending and crawling before the intense sound of gunshots began to reign.

Alexandria and I crawled toward the entrance of the bedroom. Taylor kept firing at the man in my neighbor's apartment. the image of my neighbor being short was still stuck in my mind. there's something so sinister and inhumane about him.

"He's coming for you…what did that mean Carey?'' Alexandria looked back at me as I struggled to open the compartment of the corner of the room. as my security protocol, a secret room with always build for situations like this from star why no one could find me and no traces were left.

" I've never seen him in my life Alexandria. how the heck am I supposed to know what he meant?"

The gunshots seized. His noises died down. I glance around the room, only to see Taylor on the floor with a perfect shot between his eyes. Horror was written on my face. Alexandria pushed me into the compartment.

"We have to go.''

Taylor had been the head of my security detail for 3 years now. he had lasted the longest compared to everyone else. suddenly the sound of more than shots could be heard downstairs. my heart beat rapidly at the imagination that he had come for me. there is a man who I didn't even know was serious about killing me. what did I truly do to deserve the frustrations of living my life like this?

Once settled into the little space, I curled myself and brought my knees to my chest.

"Peace..Courage…Silence.

He can't hurt me if he can't find me."

"Peace…Courage…Silence.

He can't hurt me if he can't find me.''

"Peace…Courage…Silence.

He can't hurt me if he can't find me.''

I recited the mantra over and over and over again. When I was a little girl, my father told me to always keep my head occupied when stuck in situations like this. I survived well when I repeated these words over and over again until all the noise seized and I was safe. for some reason, however, I can't help but feel that today will be different. Taylor is dead. None of the other guards have come. The shouts from downstairs are probably of the mystery man.
