Chapter 1: Invasion

A petite silhouette looked up from the cold marbled floor. She stared at the once stunning muslin curtains with classic patterns strategically punctuating the alluring design that now had been drenched in blood. The pearly white walls had met the same fate.

The captivating chandelier that had once stood tall, catching the eyes of the onlooker and casting them into a state of utter awe, now embraced the ground as it's crystals lay scattered.

The whole ballroom had been turned into what looked like a slaughter house.

The whole room now wore red. Streaks of blood painting across the walls. She slightly wrinkled her nose. The bodies had started to smell. Indicating that she had been knocked out for quite some time.

She clenched her teeth as she attempted to get up. Her body ached as if every inch of it was being stabbed mercilessly. She tried to remember what had happened before she had been knocked out but her efforts proved futile as all she got in return was a splitting headache.

She didn't have the luxury of time to keep thinking. Her eyes scanned the ruined ballroom in an attempt to find her sword. She found it close to a person laying supine with their head turned away from her. She approached her sword and picked it up. Her heart sunk.

The person looked painfully familiar. Heshraile, one of her own comrades, laying on the ground, lifeless and much like the room, drenched in blood. She knelt down and stared at her.

Tears formed in her eyes, threatening to fall. She would avenge her if it was the last thing she did. But first, she needed to get out of here. She clenched the sword in her hands, got up and gave a final salute to her best friend.

It still puzzled her how she was still alive.

She should have been dead by now as she was most vulnerable. She considered the fact that she had blood all over her so this could very well be the reason she survived.

She had to get to Raeyelle and fast. She figured she would be in the great hall as that was were she went before the invasion to give a report.

She made her way there cautiously, her sword erect and firm in her hands. She had the advantage of shortcuts since she'd been serving here for a decent amount of time.

She could feel the temperature around her drop as she neared the room. She had a bad feeling but she silently wished that they were still alive, although the chances are less likely.

She switched her sword to her left hand and used her right hand to turn the golden door knob.

...

She stepped into the room, careful not to make any noise in case someone was in her presence. Everything was intact. Nothing was out of place. The place was tidy and neat. This was odd. She took a single step forward and saw two pairs of feet sticking out from behind the center table.

She carefully neared them and as expected the King and Queen laid on the ground each with matching red splotches on their clothes. They had been stabbed. Now that was very different. she made a mental note to think about this in depth late because now was not the time.

She noticed that the king's eyes were still opened indicating that rigor mortis had already set in. She bent down carefully and gently swept her hands over his eyes. His wife's eyes were already closed.

She got up and was headed for the door when she heard a sound.

She quickly unsheathed her sword and moved behind the door where she would be able to easily unleash a lethal attack. The door clicked open, slowly opening and allowing the person access to the inside of the room.

She recognized a familiar set of red hair akin to that of Rae's. She lowered her sword.

"Could you let me get paid then kill me?". Rae said as she wore a sarcastic look. She had a slight curve on her lips and some blood on her left cheek. She always knew when to joke around at the wrong time.

She got out of her previous spot and reminded her, "Focus Rae, we don't have time for this"

"No hello, I'm so glad you're not dead?" She was met with a stern look.

"Where's Raile?" she asked, finally getting serious. Her face suddenly darkened and Rae immediately understood why.

"Okay let's go" Rae said, finally getting serious.

She wiped the blood and opened the door that led to the main hallway.

They exchanged meaningful glances and started walking but they were both walking in different directions; Rae was walking left and she was heading towards the right which led to the throne room.

"Where are you going?", they asked simultaneously. "Oh don't tell me you're planning on about going back there" Rae said, slightly annoyed. "I'm not", she replied indifferently. "Oh good I thought you were" , said Rae, relieved. "I'm not planning at all, but I'm still going ", she was persistent and Rae could tell.

"Oh come on dear it's suicidal to just go on in, I mean, there are just two of us. We can at least escape, get more help and come back." Rae tried to use her motherly voice, hoping to coax her, although still persistent.

"No matter what it's our duty to protect them we can't just abandon them that's what we're here for. Remember our training", she said, matter of factly.

"Abandon who? Protect them with what? We don't even know we're the rest of the family members are! We'll come back once we get help. Going in now would only make things harder." Rae was getting visibly frustrated.

"We are the help. This is what we're here for. We'll protect them with our lives and don't worry, we'll find them".

Rae finally agreed and they both headed out of the door, starting for the armoury.
