Chapter 16: surprising encounters

Five days have passed since I arrived in Roa. During that period, I worked on a variety of jobs. In fact, I was returning from one right now. I planned to return to Chiron the next night. To continue my North God training. I'm strolling down the alleyway late at night when I notice some thuggish-looking individuals racing into the alleyway holding a female with red hair. They're clearly up to no good because he has his hand over her lips. Only for a massive stone wall to appear out of nowhere, cutting them off and making me lose sight of what's going on.

Curiosity piqued, and I used the magic spell earth pillar to discreetly lift myself so that I could still utilize the wall as shelter but could peek over it to see what was going on. And what I saw astounded me considerably. I observe Rudy fighting against what I believe to be kidnappers. And it appears that the two kidnappers are currently attempting to entrap him in their plot. When Rudy exclaims, "Money can't buy waifus," he sends a massive fireball into the sky. That was a strange thing to say. He then appeared to push himself forward using magic.

I prepared my blade in case I needed to jump down and take one of the would-be kidnappers out. But if everything goes as planned, I won't step in, and I will let Rudy be the hero. As I watched, Rudy advanced and fired numerous Stone cannons, which, when struck, erupted into dust, forcing the guys to cough and briefly blind them. He then used powerful magic to sever one of the captors' arms, grabbing the girl and blasting himself backwards. As one man proceeded to pursue, he became entangled in a quagmire. Rudy then fired a few more stone bullets.

All three of them are effortlessly deflected by the kidnapper. The kidnapper lifts his arm. From what I recall, there is a specific North God method for throwing your sword. To avoid this, I jump down and bring my sword down on the man's arm, severing it as I land. I instantly swung my sword again, this time at his leg, severing it as well. The man collapses to the ground, screaming in agony. He was knocked unconscious with a hard kick to the head. The one that Rudy struck with wind magic started to get up, a hard punch to the jaw was enough to knock him out.

My attention was drawn to the one who was blocking the path out of the alleyway. But just as I was ready to take a step forward, a figure came crashing down, posing to strike. "Rudy, Eris, what's going on?" she shouts urgently. Rudy begins to talk, but I can't hear him since he speaks low. The beast lady, who is pretty muscular, rises up. After checking on the other two, she turns to me and goes up to me.

"So you're Ryan," she says. I answer, "Yes, I am," and she asks, "Does your mother know where you are?" I respond, "Yes," and she nods, "Thank you for safeguarding Lady Eris; if you come with me, I'm very sure the Lord would want to thank you as well." I shook my head and replied, "Rudy seems to be the true hero here; I'm not sure what's going on, but I only helped a bit." The beast lady just nods and adds, "I'll send some guards to take these folks up for questioning." By the way, my name is Ghislaine. I was in the same party as your parents as an adventure."

She grabs the man who was blocking the exit after saying that. He falls to his knees, imploring, as she snatches his hair and begins dragging him away. And the redhead girl, who had to be named Eris, trailed her. Rudy gives me a thumbs up and says, "Don't worry, Ryan; I'll explain later." I tell him, "I live at the dojo in Chiron; you can send me a letter there," and he walks away with Eris. And I return to the adventurer to return my tags.

I walk up to the adventure guild and open the door to find Leo turning in his tags. I approach the counter, next to Leo, who grumbles. I've run across him a few times in the last five days, and each time his reaction has been the same. This time, I'll have my answers. "So, what's your problem with me, Leo?" I ask. He takes a long breath and says, "Listen, kid, I don't want to speak about it." That's rich coming from someone two years my senior. I answer, "I'd at least want to know why you don't like me." I mean, it's fine if you just don't like me."

"Look, it's not you; I have an issue with the Grayrats," Leo grumbles. "What about the Grayrats?" I asked. "You see, my mom met Paul Grayrat; he seduced her, took her to bed, and then completely abandoned her the next day. When she found out she was pregnant, her mom and dad kicked her out of the house because they considered her damaged goods," Leo says. When I learned the narrative that made Leo my brother, my jaw practically dropped open.

"That makes you my brother," I answered, surprised. When Leo heard this, he said, "What do you mean that makes me your brother?" "Paul Grayrat is my father," I said swiftly. "Does that imply you know where he is?" questioned Leo, his face becoming pale. "Yes, that does indicate that I know where he is," I said. Leo looks me in the eyes and asks, "Where? Because I'm going to kick his ass for what he did when I'm strong enough!" I nod and add, "He deserves it, and you can find him at Buena Village."

In disbelief, Leo exclaims, "Why would you give that information away after what I just said I wanted to do to him?" So I told Leo everything that transpired that caused me to flee and my mother to leave him, and he responded, "I see it wasn't much better living with him then." I shook my head and answered, "No, it wasn't," to which he replied, "Look, just because we have the same father doesn't make us brothers, but I'd want to try to be your friend." "I'd enjoy it a lot," I said as I shook his hand. We finished turning in our tags and parted ways.

I returned to the inn and lay down; there was a lot on my mind that I couldn't get out of my thoughts, and I hardly slept. As I rise up and stretch, morning comes over the sky, and I pack up. I returned to the adventure guild to pick up a few jobs. As I entered the adventure guild, I saw someone I didn't expect to see: a really fine-looking elf guy at the counter. As I drew closer, I discovered who it was: Laws.

"Laws?" He turns around, astonished to see me, and says, "What are you doing here, Ryan?" "I thought I'd perform one final job before heading back to Chiron," I said. "What are you doing here?" "Your father went over the deep end, and once Zenith left him, he blamed Sylphiette and forced us out of the community," he added, his expression mournful.

"I'm really sorry about that; is there anything I can do to help?" I said. I can pay you for your losses if you want me to."

"No, you don't; it's not your fault, and my pride won't allow it; we have everything under control," Laws remarked, shaking his head. The way he delivered the final sentence made me think he was trying to persuade himself as much as he was trying to persuade me. Then I said, "Would it be good if I visited Sylphiette then?" "If she's not busy, I don't mind," Laws said. "She'd like for you to visit the red rat inn."

I bid my goodbyes to the laws and left the adventure guild for the Crimson Rat.

I discovered the crimson rat after around 15 minutes. It serves as both an inn and a tavern. When I walk into the entrance, it appears to be rather quiet. But as soon as I step through it, I'm tackled out of nowhere by a female wearing a hooded cloak that hides her face. "I'm so delighted I could see you again," the small girl sobbed. Sylphiette's voice sounds familiar to me. "I told you I'd find a way to see you, even if I didn't anticipate you and your family to relocate to Roa," I patted her head.

Sylphiette eventually lets go after about 10 minutes of attempting to squeeze the life out of me. And I inquired, "Are you free or busy?" Sylphiette replies, "I just finished all I needed to do, so I have about an hour free," and I ask, "Would you like to play?" Sylphiette grins gleefully and replies, "Sure," and we start playing games like tag and hide and seek. I discovered that she is still being bullied, but it appears that her green hair has not deterred the grownups.

After about an hour, it was time for her to return to the inn, so I escorted her there and promised her I'd be back in about three weeks. Then I began the journey back home, arriving in Chiron after a day. The first thing I did was embrace my mother and tell her I was back. She hugged me excitedly, and I told her everything that had happened, including the fact that I had discovered a half brother, which didn't make Mom very pleased. And mom felt terrible for Laws and his family because she didn't imagine Paul would go so low.

I spent the rest of my time playing with my baby sister and taking care of her before going to bed.
