Chapter 10: The bachelor man Asweda Asweda

The once great man was surprised about how the events turned when he was missing. The man was really disappointed as he could not believe the situation at hand. His third wife had been inherited by a mad man who had already impregnated her. The first and second wives had already been inherited by Ochilo and gone father to have four sons in three years. It was a tough time for the poor man Asweda Asweda. Asweda had no roof under him and was accommodated by the mother. Ochilo, now knowing that Asweda Asweda could not defend himself and was under his mercy, he became rough and could not allow Asweda Asweda back to his wives. Ochilo on many occasions harassed his brother Asweda Asweda who by then was helpless and depended on a walking stick for support. Ochilo could not accommodate any intervention by the family member to have Asweda Asweda back to his wives. Asweda Asweda was really hurt as she really loved the second wife so much that he could not let her go. Asweda Asweda had to come up with a plan to recover his stolen wives.

The poor Asweda Asweda got a solution in his mind. He had now to implement the solution he had in mind. Although it was a risky one but Asweda Asweda was always fearless and believed in himself. Asweda Asweda had a revenge thought in his mind. The revenge mission was to be gradual as recovering all the three wives at once was really hard. Asweda Asweda had to recover his third wife first. He organized to do away with the mad man. He took his machete and sharpened it indicating a serious crime to happen soon. Traditionally, killing someone was really order of the day and men were usually very jealousy on love matters.

One rainy night, Asweda stayed awake outside his mother's hut. Although it was really raining but he could persevere and was determined to accomplish his mission. He walked slowly toward his former third wife's muddy hut. He stayed at the entrance for more than two hours aiming at his enemy. The enemy for this case was the mad man who had inherited his wife. The new couple were chatting happily as they could be heard laughing from time to time. Asweda Asweda was angered more when he heard their conversation. Still in the dark night, Asweda Asweda waited a little bit longer and could not give up. Before the new couple could sleep, the husband went out to relieve himself. It was a common practice for men to urinate besides the house before surrendering to slumber. That is how the mad man got himself in a death situation. The moment he stepped at the door, Asweda Asweda quickly took his sharp machete and chopped off his head. The man died instantly after a ten second struggle with his life. The attempt by Asweda Asweda to run into the hideout was fruitless as his mobility was reduced by the defects in his legs.

The struggle by the dying man raised attention in the homestead. This made members of the home rush to the scene to see what is going on. Everyone was surprised by what had happened. There was a vivid evidence that Asweda Asweda had killed the mad man. Asweda Asweda was holding a machete full of blood. Ochilo, knowing very well the reason behind Asweda's intention to kill the mad man, was very worried. He thought he will be the next on the list. He felt unsafe in the hands of his brother Asweda Asweda. Ochilo thought of a way to finish Asweda Asweda completely so that he be safe. He had a lot of thought in his mind. He once thought of running away into the hideout once again. Ochilo quickly took his machete and moved close to his brother Asweda Asweda with an intention of eliminating him on this earth. Ochilo felt eliminating Asweda completely will give him peace. He was really worried about what Asweda would do to him, knowing very well Asweda was a merciless man. Ochilo quickly took a machete and quickly attacked the brother. By the time the crowd came to rescue Asweda Asweda was greatly injured. The angry mob had to discipline Ochilo. He was thoroughly beaten by the mob.

Asweda Asweda health situation worsened everyday. He suffered with sickness for long. Asweda had to live a miserable life for the rest of his life. Ochilo feared for his life and ran away into the hideout several miles away. Asweda returned back to his wives again. The life had to continue as usual. The family had reunited again and happiness prevailed again. Asweda Asweda was already physically disadvantaged and had little to do to gain wealth. He was among the poorest people in that society. Asweda Asweda was now disturbed about how to gain back his social status. He finally got a solution. Asweda's first daughter Shantela was now twelve years old and the second one Aziza ten years old. Asweda Asweda announced their marriage and suitable suitors to show their interest. A very old rich man called Ombeva showed interest and came to Asweda's home for the same purpose. He was interested in marrying off the two daughters. It was the turning point for Asweda again. Asweda saw light at the end of the tunnel. He accepted the Ombeva's proposal and quickly set a high bride price. The old man Ombeva could not bargain any more. He accepted and sent elders to bring two hundred cattle to Asweda as the bride price. Asweda's social status raised again. Asweda Asweda considered himself rich and wanted to marry the fourth wife. He sent elders to go to a nearby village to look for a woman for him. The elders found a woman called Helena for him. He then organized for dowry payment and owned the woman. Helena had considerable beauty. She had a nice voice and good figure.
