Chapter 2: Chapter 02:Family Rules

"As the heir apparent to the Browns family business, you would have to undergo a poverty training to help you realize that nothing comes easily in life, your father went through this task before he became the heir apparent, he made me make him a promise on his sick bed before he died that you would start this training after you turned eighteen, and that we must do" Genevieve explained sadly with a forced smile as she looked at her daughter's eyes, she could see and feel the disappointment and fear in them

Sarah's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Poverty training? It was a concept she had never heard of before. Genevieve had always emphasized the importance of empathy and understanding, but this training seemed to be on an entirely different level.

"Ugh... mom!" she called with a breaking voice "what are the requirements for this so called poverty training?" Sarah asked holding her dress, hoping it wouldn't be something that would sperate her from her mother

"You will be away from home" Genevieve said after a few minutes of silence

"loosing all communications with the family, this is another phase of chapter in your life, you will learn to live and fend for yourself without the family's support, this is a journey you have to embark on your own, no one from this family can help you, not even me your mother, it's a rule that must be followed and respected, and it passes down from generation to generation, in the sense that your own heir would undergo this process as well" Genevieve explained bitterly, her eyes flickering with sadness

"Follow me" were the only words that came right out of Genevieve's mouth, with piqued curiosity, Sarah reluctantly followed her mother down a series of winding corridors, walking past countless works of art, priceless antiques, and intricate marble statues. Her fingertips almost instinctively grazed the smooth surfaces as she breathed in the scent of immense wealth and privilege.

They finally arrived at a small door tucked away in a corner of the mansion. Stepping inside, Sarah found herself in what appeared to be a modest apartment. A single bed, a worn-out couch, and a modest table adorned the space. It was a stark contrast to the luxurious surroundings she had grown accustomed to. Having not seen such a thing before in her seventeen years on earth, she gasped in shock

"What are these?" she asked scanning the room with her eyes

Genevieve turned to Sarah, her eyes filled with a mixture of pride and determination.

"These things you see here are some of the things your father brought back home after his poverty training, to help him remember things and meditate" Genevieve said and paused taking down a frame

"You've never been allowed into this room ever since you were born due to some personal reasons but now you've stepped in without fear, and that's how you are going to step into your training without fear. It's important for you to understand the realities faced by those less fortunate, that's why you're being removed from the luxurious you've always known." Genevieve said, Sarah's shoulder dropped realizing she wouldn't even have any sort of maid around to run her errands and laundries.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she realized the true purpose behind her mother's intentions. It wasn't just about empathy; it was about testing her mettle, her commitment, and her dedication to representing the Browns name with integrity.

"You must know, this was not my intention but the rules that guided this family's bloodline for years" Genevieve said sadly, looking at her daughter, she could feel her pain as she tugged on her dress with balls of sweats forming on her face

Sarah's face crumbled after receiving the news of her poverty training, her heart heavy with sadness and despair. Overwhelmed by the harsh reality presented, she retreated to her room, seeking solace in tears that flowed uncontrollably, feeling the weight of the world bearing down on her fragile shoulders. she was only seventeen to become eighteen the next day which was only few hours away, how was she going to cope alone without her servants, nanny, friends and mom, she was in tears and didn't even come down for dinner despite her mom's persuasion, she wished the next day never came, but it did anyways.
