Chapter 8: Who Is He?

"Haha, this is cool! I didn't expect to knock that bald bodyguard unconscious in one hit. What a fun experience," Vern exclaimed with a smile on his face. Vern didn't realize he had such a powerful body inside him.

Zay looked at Vern's back two steps away from her position. She smiled, lips asymmetrical as she recalled the fact that before the bald bodyguard was hit by Vern, she had paralyzed him with a kick attack right on the calf and a punch right on the bald bodyguard's stomach. Zay sighed, even so Vern was so helpful that she uttered a sincere phrase, "Thank you for helping me escape."

Vern stopped his steps, he turned towards Zay with a big smile. Vern replied, "You're welcome. Thank you also for accepting me as a partner in this revenge mission."

Zay nodded with a faint smile, she tried to forget all the unfortunate events that almost demoralized her. She lifted her head while praising Vern, "You're great! Let's celebrate your success with some beers and nachos, how about it?"

"Alright, I'll make sure tonight is an unforgettable moment," Vern replied no less enthusiastically.

They're both back on the road with the same motivation to destroy the same opponent. They couldn't wait to see the destruction of Jack and Roderick.

Very comfortable and pleasant, being close to that woman is not as bad as I imagined. Vern muttered to himself, not realizing that he kept smiling along the way.

"Hey, stop that smile!" Zay gave Vern a warning. She furrowed her brows as she sighed. Zay hoped Vern was okay considering how many punches she had given.

"He he, honestly I'm very happy because I've never felt this free in my life," Vern replied with a big smile, he faced forward, closing his eyes while breathing in the night air. How is it possible for Vern to be free, if every day he has to work overtime desperately for the company.

"What a strange person," Zay said. She shook her head and didn't want to catch Vern's obscure illness. Zay walked quickly away from Vern.

"Hey, wait, explain what you meant?" exclaimed Vern, a little offended. He ran a little after Zay who was a few meters away from his place.

From a distance they were seen walking hand in hand, occasionally Zay smiled at Vern who was trying to defend himself. Slowly the friendship was established. The excitement brought them faster to Zay's house.

"This is where you live?" asked Vern while observing the rental house in front of him. He followed Zay into the gate, then up the stairs together.

"Yes, even though it's small my place is clean," Zay replied. She knew very well that the Vlodostok family home was spacious, super clean and even smelled nice.

"No problem, I like it here," said Vern smiling. He could see the stars in the sky quite clearly which gave him a new experience.

"Alright, we're here," Zay said, she placed a plastic bag of beer next to the door and started to open the house.

Vern looked around the area of Zay's rented house, where in one hallway there were only 2 houses that were spacious enough for 5 people to live in. Zay's house was at the end of the hallway close to a mini garden with tables and chairs.

"Come on in!" Zay invited. She waved her hand to let Vern in.

Vern didn't turn around, instead he walked straight towards the mini park. He only answered after turning around, "Can we have a drink out here? It's so beautiful tonight, I can't get enough of the starry sky."

Zay tilted her head, then shrugged. She accepted Vern's invitation, "Okay, that's not bad."

The two of them were already seated on the lawn chairs. Vern enthusiastically uncapped the alcohol and poured it into a glass. He raised his own glass, toasting, "Let's drink."

Zay smiled as she raised his glass, then took a sip of beer that somehow tasted sweet. It was effective enough to distract her from her disturbing thoughts throughout the day.

"You really like stars?" Zay asked. She looked up, gazing at the sky.

"I started liking it when my late papa took me camping in the mountains with him, it was a clear night and the constellations caught my attention," Vern replied, looking down.

Vern took a breath and didn't want to share his sadness, so changed the subject and was more interested in knowing Zay's problems. He asked the question, "Do you know Roderick well?"

Zay gripped her glass, she started to heat it up finishing the rest of the alcohol quickly without answering Vern's question.

"Ahh haha," Vern's discordant laughter. He realized Zay's mood more quickly. He corrected his words, "Sorry, it wasn't my intention to remember him. How could an asshole like him be friends with you! He's an asshole just like his father! Shit!"

Vern gulped down the rest of his alcohol, he got angry at the thought of Roderick making him remember that sycophantic uncle. He grabbed the bottle of alcohol, pouring it back into the glass for him to finish in one go.

"Hey, stop that. I don't want to deal with you when you get drunk later," Zay prevented lazily. She sighed heavily, then said, "That jerk is not my friend, he's the pervert who desecrated my chastity when we were in high school."

"What did you say!" screeched Vern in surprise. He stood up with a shaken body full of emotions coursing through his veins.

"You won't believe me, because he's your brother. If you want to cancel that revenge I understand," Zay added casually looking straight into the darkness of the night.

Vern stepped closer to Zay, he gripped Zay's hand as he exclaimed, "Come on, let's slaughter Roderick now!"

Zay was surprised by Vern's reaction. She could feel that Vern's lousy grip could break free in a single jerk. But Zay didn't, she said, "Let go of my hand."

"I'm quite impressed with your attitude. One thing you should know, revenge without tactics is a futile act."

Slowly Vern's grip weakened, the whole body taking over the brain. Zay's words sounded so reasonable that it made him exhale.

"I'm very sorry and feel ashamed of what my bastard brother has done. I apologize," Vern said as he bowed, feeling bad in front of Zay.

"It's not your fault! Hah, forget it for a moment, this beer is more fun than thinking about that," Zay replied, looking fine. Yet in her heart she was trying hard to hold back the pain that was churning violently. She realized that she should not rashly take revenge against Roderick.

Silence dominated for a while, Vern felt awkward it was difficult to break the ice when his own heart was rumbling full of curses directed at Roderick.

"Wow, it's been a while since I've seen you. Can I join you for a drink?" asked a stout man in casual clothes. He suddenly came from behind without either of them realizing it.

"Who is he?" asked Vern frowning. He observed the man and then looked at Zay for an answer.
