Chapter 40: The Bug

On the other side of the dimly lit base, King Ada, Ren, and the rest of their covert infiltration team remained blissfully ignorant that their presence had been detected. The air was thick with tension as they moved silently through the shadows.

"I haven't seen anything unusual yet, but I must say, this base has the worst security I've ever seen," Ren commented with a hint of disappointment, shaking his head at the apparent lack of vigilance. He couldn't help but feel a sense of overconfidence in their mission.

"Don't underestimate it, Ren. If Wesker's words are true, there might be a strong security force here. Remember the ones we encountered during our last mission in this place? If we get caught, the consequences could be dire," Ada warned, her senses keenly attuned to potential danger, making her uneasy. Her piercing gaze scanned the dark corridors for any signs of trouble.

Jill, a tall and enigmatic woman equipped with tactical gear and a pistol, shared her discomfort, her eyes darting around the gloom. "Let's find our mission target quickly. I have a bad feeling about this." Her presence in the team remained shrouded in mystery, and her motives seemed enigmatic to the others.

Wesker, the mastermind behind the operation, suspected that there might be R-1 human enhancement serums or even more advanced formulas hidden within this base. He had initially harbored suspicions about the company's secret projects since assuming his current position, but the details remained elusive until Varion's base had suddenly come to light, confirming the location of his suspicions.

"Hey there, ladies, what are you searching for?" A nonchalant voice unexpectedly emerged from behind Ren and the others, jolting them with surprise. The sudden appearance of Carlos sent a shiver down their spines.

"Quick, move..." Ren shouted, reacting with swiftness, and opened fire on the sudden intruder, Carlos. Bullets tore through the air, striking the wall as Carlos agilely dodged the gunfire, his face bearing an amused expression. With swift retaliation, he returned fire, and the team suffered casualties as bullets found their marks. Several members who had been trailing them were hit, and blood sprayed like raindrops. Death had never felt so close.

"Damn it, head to the rendezvous point." Ren and the team hastily retreated, still firing on Carlos despite their exposed position. In hindsight, had they been more attentive, they might have noticed something peculiar.

Carlos' speed was anything but normal.

"Get them all out of here for me," Andre ordered, growing increasingly frustrated. The team's intrusion into the base was not going as planned, and they were no match for the formidable opposition.

Alarms blared throughout the base, creating a cacophony of sound, including gunfire, explosions, and even fire alarms. The scientists had all taken refuge inside the fortress, recognizing that this battle was beyond their capabilities.

"Hey, ladies, why make things difficult? Surrender peacefully, and we won't open fire," Carlos taunted, his voice echoing in the midst of the chaotic commotion.

In no time, Ren and her companions found themselves trapped in a dead-end, hemmed in with no escape route. Outside, a row of menacing guns was aimed directly at them. Leaving would mean running headlong into a storm of bullets, while staying put meant facing almost certain death.

"What should we do?" Ren looked at her diminished group, consisting only of herself, King Ada, and the now-controlled Jill. What was once an elite mission team had dwindled to just this trio. If they hadn't exercised caution earlier, they might have met their end by now.

"What other option do we have? Did you bring that thing?" Jill inquired, her tone laced with a sense of urgency.

Ren stood in the dimly lit corridor, the mysterious substance coursing through her veins. It had an otherworldly glow, casting eerie shadows on the walls. The pain that surged through her was unlike anything she had ever experienced, like a thousand fiery needles piercing her skin. She gritted her teeth, determined to endure it for the sake of her mission.

"I'll buy you time, give you 30 minutes, and then I'm leaving," Ren declared with unwavering determination, her voice tinged with both resolve and urgency.

Jill and King Ada, their faces etched with determination, exchanged resolute glances and nodded in agreement. They knew the fate of not just themselves but possibly the entire world hung in the balance.

As the approaching footsteps grew louder, Ren emerged from her hiding place, King Ada closely trailing behind her. The enigmatic newcomer, Andre, raised an inquisitive eyebrow, clearly puzzled by Ren's actions.

"Wouldn't it be simpler to just surrender? Why go through all this trouble?" Andre questioned, genuinely curious about Ren's motives.

Ren fixed Andre with a cold, unwavering gaze. "I've heard that your base houses the R-1 serum, the only place in the company where it's manufactured. Have you already used it?"

Carlos exchanged a significant look with Andre and silently confirmed Ren's suspicions. He had no intention of ending up as an unwilling subject on Varion's experimental table, courtesy of these two determined intruders. With a nod, he chose to retreat, leaving Ren and her companions to face the impending showdown.

"Hmm, so you're up for a fight, aren't you?" Ren flashed a challenging grin, baring her teeth. "I want to see who's better, you or me."

Before Ren could finish her sentence, a security guard lurking behind Andre acted swiftly, opening fire, a bullet piercing Ren's heart. A sickening pfft sound filled the air as blood flowed from the wound, but Ren's grin remained unshaken, as if the gunshot had no effect on her.

Andre's brows furrowed in both intrigue and admiration. "Interesting. No wonder you're eager to fight. I'll concede that you've earned that right."

The stage was set for an intense confrontation, with Ren's mysterious transformation adding an element of uncertainty to the already tense atmosphere in the hidden base.
