Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Mid-Autumn Festival

After another week, the other side of the entrance was complete. This time it was much faster as everyone had experience with it.

Xiaoyun was discussing with Yezi as usually on the dinner table.

"So if we want to connect the two wall, Jingming said its going to take at least two month?" Xiaoyun asked.

"Yep, he told me that trees that are in the way are going to take a long time to chop down. Since we don't have chainsaw or excavator of some sort to dig the root either. This is the good estimate side as well, it could take even longer." Yezi replied.

"Oh well, we got nothing else to do for them. Might as well let them continue then." Xiaoyun realized it for a second.

"Yeah about that... I was thinking of move some of them away from building the wall."

"Why? Is there something else we need to build?" Xiaoyun asked.

"Yeah, everyone wanted their own housing. Even if it is a mansion, its still awkward for multiple family living in one house. I was thinking of building several wooden houses between the empty gaps of the mansions. Then we can give incentive for more important worker like Jingming and Qijian the mansion. As well as the more hard working ones." Yezi suggested his idea.

"Hm... how about after the wall? I think we should get our defense done first before luxury like houses. We still don't know when the zombies are going to wonder to here from the city." Xiaoyun pushed it back.

"Hm, you right. Let continue with the wall then. Oh yeah I almost forgot to tell you, since its almost Mid-Autumn Festival in a three days. I'm planning to throw a celebration to cheer everyone up as well as giving them a break."

"Sure... hey you guys, do you want to help plan Mid-Autumn Festival?" Xiaoyun yelled towards living room.

"Of course we do!" All of them rushed to the dinner table.

"Okay okay, you guys talk with Yezi then." Xiaoyun walked back to the living room to relax.

---

Three day has passed.

It was finally the day for Mid-Autumn Festival.

"Sister Mimi, where are we sitting?" Lily was holding Xiaomi's hand as the crowd started to sit down to their assigned table.

"We are sitting... near the front right there!" The two finally sat down on their table.

"Geez Xiaomi, what took you two so long?" Yunyun asked.

"We just had to go to restroom okay?" Xiaomi replied.

"Where's mom?" Xiaomi asked.

"She's helping to cook in the back. You can go check if you want. Its still a while before it starts." Xiaoqi answered.

"Okay!" Xiaomi and Lily got up and walked toward the backstage.

The two could see Yanyan and several people cooking with a stove over propane stove.

"Hey mom!" Xiaomi waved toward Yanyan.

"Oh hey honey." Yanyan noticed Xiaomi and waved back.

After standing there for a while, Xiaomi ran back out as women started chattering with Yanyan.

"Miss Yanyan, you got such a good son. I wish my son was like yours, being able to bring so much food from the city and be such a good leader." First women spoke out.

"Xiaoyun is really smart too." Yiyi complimented.

"Y-yeah, I am so lucky to have him as my s-son." Yanyan stuttered.

"Is your son single? Actually he look so young, he probably is single right?" Second women spoke.

"Um... y-yeah he single." Yanyan face blushes.

"What a coincident, my daughter is also single. I think they will make a great match." The second women spoke again

"Hey my daughter is also single, I think they are even a better match. Also isn't your daughter still in middle school?" Third women chime in.

"Yeah so what? We can always betrothal them then marry later." The second women argued back.

"Ma'am what do you think about me? C-can I marry your son?" The fourth women asked directly.

"S-sorry you guys need to ask him directly... I-I can't arrange that." Yanyan turned all of them down.

"Come on, you're his mom right? He has to listen to you for marriage... Whatever." The women went back to cooking.

"Whew." Yanyan let out a sigh of relief.

---

Meanwhile Xiaoyun, Yezi, and Renqin was standing at the separate table discussing.

"Wait why didn't anyone told me that I was going to have a speech?" Xiaoyun looked at the two.

"Come on, its not that hard to spew some encouragement words. Xiaoqi told me that you used to public speaking right?" Yezi replied.

"Well she isn't wrong." Xiaoyun thought back to the speeches he made at the yearly company meeting in the past.

"Xiaoyun... have you thought to making yourself the mayor? This would be the perfect time to announce it." Renqin suddenly suggested.

"W-what?" Xiaoyun looked shock at Renqin.

"Yeah, what wrong? Somebody got to lead and you already leading so might as well." Rinqin explained.

"I think Renqin idea is genius." Yezi agreed.

"B-but Yezi you don't want to do it? I-I can't do this" Xiaoyun tried to refuse it.

"People want a young strong leader, I'm too old and chubby. I look more like a villain than a hero... Beside, all the food is from you, they all recognize you and support you. Don't worry about it brother, I am not jealous of it." Yezi patted Xiaoyun on the shoulder.

"Wait Renqin aren't you the elected leader of your group?" Xiaoyun looked at the last hope he has getting out of this.

"Well the group disbanded long time ago. They all live by themselves so I'm just a free man." Renqin laughed as he languish Xiaoyun's last hope.

"I-I guess I will be the mayor then..." Xiaoyun looked down nervously.

"Don't worry you will do a great job, we all going to help you. Its just a title anyway. Don't be so nervous." Yezi pour a small cup of beer and drank it down.

---

It was finally time, as the clock hits seven and all the food was served on the tables.

"Hello is this working? Okay hello everyone! Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! " Yezi spoke on the microphone.

The crowd started clapping.

"I hope everyone can enjoy the food today. Can we get a round of applause for the chefs?"

The crowd clapped again.

"Beside the celebration of this holiday, I want to announce something. Let give a round of applause for Mister Xiaoyun!" Yezi ran back downstage.

Xiaoyun walked up the stage and picked up the microphone.

"Good evening everyone. I just want to say thank you for everyone's hard work. Without it we will not have such a strong wall to defend ourselves with." Xiaoyun bowed down.

The crowd clapped louder and louder.

"I assume everyone know me, but I am going to introduce myself again. Hello, my name is Chen Xiaoyun. Before this outbreak, I used to be an orphan. But luckily just a day before the outbreak, I was able to meet my family!" Xiaoyun waved at Yanyan's table.

"I'm really thankful for them, and brother Yezi... If it wasn't for him helping me, I wouldn't even be here on this stage."

"I know some of you might be worrying about things like if we have enough food, but I just want to announce that we have an whole entire house full of food. We have enough to make it!" Xiaoyun turned on the projector to show a video that Xiaoqi recorded in 302 with a massive freezer full of food and cans stacked on top of each other.

Everyone clapped and cheered in excitement.

"We are also happy to announce, we made an food stamp that can directly trade food at 302 every morning and afternoon! No longer will you need to rely on only having one can of food."

"How do we get the food stamps?" One of the person asked.

"Through work! Before you guys want to have one minimum can food back, think about it, would you be happy if someone get food despite not working at all? So from now on, all work will give equivalent amount of food stamps. As a example, Mr. Jingming and Mr.Qijian will be get pay in twelve food stamps per day."

"How much does each food stamp worth?" Another person asked.

"Each food stamp can be trade in a can of vegetable, two food stamp for one can of meat. Three food stamp for food in the freezer." Xiaoyun replied back.

"Don't worry, two people working is enough to feed at least five people in the family. Considering everyone here are two parent with a kid, only one person working and its would still enough. Although I encourage everyone to work." Xiaoyun added.

"Thank you sir!" The crowd started clapping again.

As the crowd finish clapping, Xiaoyun could see Yezi giving him an eye signal.

Xiaoyun sigh for a second, and pick up the microphone again.

"I want to ask everyone a question. Is everyone happy with where they are right now?"

"Yes! Without you sir we would of been dead!" Lingang yelled out in support.

"Yeah! Without you we all be dead!" The six that Xiaoyun rescued in the past yelled out in support.

Xiaoyun thanks that table as he waved his hand.

"How about you guys? I know we only knew each other for three weeks... Here let me ask you this, have I mistreated anyone here or forced anyone to work?" Xiaoyun put down the microphone.

"No sir, you had been the most generous person I had seen!" An elderly man yelled out!

"Yeah!" The crowd started cheering to Xiaoyun.

"Thank you, thank you." Xiaoyun bowed down.

"Can we have a moment of silent for people who had fallen... I know some of you had lost family member from this outbreak... We may not see them again but they will always be in our heart." The crowd fell into silent.

"But lets not drown in sadness, they wouldn't want us to be sad if they were here. We must continue carry on with hope." As Xiaoyun finished, the crowd clapped and cheered.

Before Xiaoyun could put down the microphone, he could see Yezi giving him the eye signal.

"I-I have one last question for everyone... would you guys support me becoming the mayor and leader of this small town?" Xiaoyun finally said it.

The crowd fall into complete silent, until Qingtian spoke up.

"Sir, you had been the leader the whole time... isn't a bit late to ask that?" The entire crowd nodded in agreement.

"Oh." Xiaoyun scratched his head as the entire crowd burst into laughter.

"Well, thank you everyone! Have a happy Mid-Autumn Festival, please enjoy yourself!" Xiaoyun put down the microphone as the crowd cheered and clapped.

Xiaoyun ran back to his assigned table.

"Ha! Look like there was no reason to even say that out loud." Yezi laughed at Xiaoyun's embarrassed face.

"Yeah yeah whatever." Xiaoyun started eating to hide his face.

"Xiaoyun! That was amazing!" Xiaomi looked at Xiaoyun in excitement.

"T-thank you." Xiaoyun thanks Xiaomi.

"I'm glad they went with the food stamp... I was getting worried that people was going to refuse it." Xiaoqi pick up an shrimp.

"Well people wanted to work and be able to earn more than other. The fact that they work extra hard when Qijian was selected three people to get extra food shows they are willing to put in the effort for their family." Xiaoyun replied.

"You're right. People want to inherently improve their life, of course they going to want to get off people who doesn't work." Xiaoqi nodded in agreement.

"B-but how about the elderly and the young? What if they don't have a family that can support them?" Yunyun suddenly brought it up.

"Yunyun... do you think they can survive in this environment?... Have you not notice all the elderly and younger kids that made it here are with healthy adults?" Xiaoyun reminded Yunyun.

"Oh..." Yunyun looked down.

"Hey lets stop talking about business, its a day to celebrate!" Yanyan cheered Yunyun up.

"Let's cheers!" Yiyi lifted her wine glass up.

"Cheers!" Everyone on the table lifted the wine glass as well, except for Xiaomi and Lily who cheered with soda in their glass.
