Chapter 51: escaping

"Wake up my lady."

Crown jolted up from sleep when she remembered where she was. It was morning already but how... "How did you get in? I had that door locked?"

"Locked? It wasn't locked on my arrival,"

"Who could have. . . Why are you here?

"To help you get ready for the day my lady."

"You did so yesterday, is this an occurring thing with you?" She asked, her voice groggy from sleep.

"Uhm, I'm sorry for not explaining better yesterday. I am your personal servant. I can't be found far away from you at anytime at all. I am in charge of taking care of you and your needs."

"For how long?"

"Usually this position comes as a lifetime job, unless I betray you in some way or you decide to let me go."

"Oh. Okay, so you are to be my shadow?"

"I suppose that explains it better." Eli smiled. "Let's have you ready for the day."

An hour later and crown was dressed in a yellow dress with beaded designs that complemented her skin colour. The skirt was voluminous but light enough for her to move freely.

Eli led her to the breakfast room that was just for her and her husband.

"Good morning princess." Zaccai greeted not rising to acknowledge her arrival neither did he look up from the scroll he held and was reading.

"Did you enter my room at any point last night?" Crown asked still standing, even after a servant pulled out her chair.

He said nothing.

"That's all the answer I need." She finally sat. "I can't imagine why you would do that, but seeing as I am still alive I'd assume it wasn't to cause harm to me."

Zaccai remained silent.

He had only come in to check in on her and found her door locked. Out of sheer panic that she may be up to no good he had entered from a secret doorway that she was never going to know about.

He found her asleep, so quietly it almost felt like she wasn't breathing. The sight of her, in that state, with what she wore, her face, so gentle and beautiful was all he needed to see to ruin his night even more. The urge to wake her up was strong and evident, but instead he had gone for a hunt and tired himself out before returning home.

"Would you say something."

"I owe you no explanation as to why I did what I did.

"Do well to not repeat that tonight." He closed the scroll and placed it on the table.

"I will do what I so well please."

He spared her a glance before finally digging into his food.

While she was finely dressed and prepped Zaccai on the other hand looked like he ran out half way getting ready. He looked like he had a rough night, She noticed his hair grew way past his shoulders and even with the warm lights around them, it stood out looking like ice. Zaccai pretended to not know she was studying him.

They ate in silence and Crown was the first to leave.

"See you tonight then."

"You cannot be serious."

"I spared you the first night, that was all the grace you had."

"I deserve more than a day, don't you think?"

"So pick a day." He raised a golden cup to his lips and breathed in its content. It was blood, but his new wife didn't know that.

"What?"

"What day do you think you would be ready for me?"

"I cannot answer that."

"So tonight then—"

"No!" She yelled. "I will let you know by today's end. Right now I am rather concerned about my introduction to your society."

"Fair enough." He cleaned the corners of his mouth with the napkin that was placed on his laps before rising. "I'd see you at dinner then." He left without another word.

Crown did her best to occupy herself with exploring the new place that was to be home to her. Every room she stumbled upon seemed to be better that the last one.

Eli followed her closely, not leaving her side.

It wasnt until noon that she got tired and headed back to her room.

"Can I please be alone for a moment?" She asked Eli who was skeptical about the question but nodded and simply backed out of the room.

"I would be right outside here my lady. Just call me when you need me."

"Surely I will. Thank you."

Once the door closed. She turned to the window and ran to it. She looked down to realise how high she was from the ground.

"Hmm, escaping won't be easy." She thought.
