Chapter 2: A Sign Of Awakening

My left eye blinked slowly as it tried to adjust to the light. I have been unconscious for nearly a whole day devoid from the light.

"What happened to you?"

The strange man who appeared to have saved me from my fated demise questioned. I was still unsure as to how I arrived here but one thing was for certain, I have this man to thank for it.

"I don't know, for a minute it felt like..they were calling me."

I replied him with my face devoid of all emotions, when you're responsible for the death of your whole family. There is only one question that goes through your mind. Why did this have to happen me?

"I meant what happened to your right eye kid."

He asked so bluntly it sounded like none of my unfortunate situations were any of his concerns.

"My father sliced right through my right eye the night my mother died, he considered me a source of despair so I can't help but think he tried to kill me. Why did you save me?"

I fired back his question with a question of my own. If he didn't care about why I nearly killed myself, why bother saving me?

The strange man got up from the chair and walked towards the door. He seemed heavily interested in not answering my question.

"I found potential in you, now when your done eating and you've regained your energy, come to the kitchen downstairs."

"I need help serving the customers."

He made it clear, he only needed me as a waiter? that's the potential he found in me? This question's filled my head and I turned towards my right spotting the food and water he provided on a table.

Being one sighted sure had it's disadvantages. Three hours had passed since I ate and got hydrated, my strength returned back to my body. I stood up for the first time in days and was a bit wobbly.

As I took several steps forward my joints made a faint popping sound and it sounded like I was a machine in need of lubrication.

I opened the door leading out of the room and all I could see from my left eye was a corridor with a staircase at the end of it.

My ears picked up a noise which came from downstairs and as I gazed down from the inner balcony, I saw many people seated on tables and chairs, a single female waitress and the man who saved me sitting down behind the counter drinking beer.

I walked down the stairs slowly checking out the whole inn as that was what it resembled, several men laughed in a drunken state and only few women were present in this inn.

"Welcome to Xerxes food court."

The man shouted loudly from behind the counter which drew my attention to it, I turned around and approached him.

He wore a plain black trousers with a white shirt and a long jacket which reached all the way to his knees.

"Your name is Xerxes?."

I asked as he took a sip of his beer.

"That is correct, as you've already deciphered I own this inn, however my purpose of establishing it dissipated since those men arrived."

Xerxes pointed at the men who were drunk and laughing.

I turned around to look at them but when I returned my sight to Xerxes I asked what any other person would in this situation.

"What did you establish it for?, And why didn't you chase them from the inn?."

Xerxes laughed at me and stood up from behind the counter and drank the entire content of the wooden cup in his hand right in front of me.

"Don't ask questions you don't want to know the answer to kid."

He told me before he took another bottle of beer from the shelf and jumped over the counter before yelling out loud to his waitress.

"Rachel we'll be gone for a while! Hold down the fort for me would ya."

The woman he spoke to was Rachel, she was the one and only waitress who served the customers in the inn.

I watched her smile as she closed her eyes and responded to his request. It was baffling, I forgot what it means to smile a long time ago.

"Sure, just be back safely okay?."

The way she smiled reminded me of my mother and I was lost in my own thoughts.

"Let's get going kid."

The voice of Xerxes breached my inner thoughts which caused me to return back to the world, Xerxes popped open the cork in the bottle and walked towards the exit of the inn and I followed from behind.

We left the Inn embarking on a little walk for a while, before I realized it for some reason he took me into the forest.

"Uh where exactly are we going Xerxes?"

Xerxes had the bottle placed into his mouth and slowly, he drank the whole contents of the bottle and sighed in utmost satisfaction.

He threw the bottle away the bottle and he looked down at me before he replied me.

"We are going to the answers to all of your questions."

He put simply, my left eye brow was raised and my mouth shifted to the right in a bit of confusion.

Xerxes movement forward came to a stop ,which in turn caused me to come to a halt as well.

"What's wrong?"

I asked in a bit of concern for our safety. Well that concern was torn apart the moment Xerxes crossed his hands against his crotch.

I displayed a look of disbelief placing my right hand on my face and shaked my head several times, he had too much to drink.

"Give me just a second."

Xerxes instantly rushed to the right and moved swiftly behind a tree to take a piss. I however continued walking forward, I took a deep breath in utter annoyance before exhaling

After walking a few miles, the more I tried to forget what happened in the past the harder it hit me back in my face and I returned to square one once more.

I was about returning to my saddened state as I pondered deeper into how much it seemed like I really caused the death of my family.

However that was interrupted when I heard a huge roar behind me, for the first time in years I felt the sensation of fear, as I turned around my eyes met with a huge four-legged beast with sharp fangs and claws.

This beast was about fifteen feet tall and it's mouth was drooling with saliva as it looked at me hungrily.

It released a frightening roar once more and I was blown backwards to the ground from the wind pressure created from it's roar.

On the ground I screamed for help before the beast launched at me with hunger, that moment it did so everywhere went silent.

I remembered this sensation, ah yes the fateful ending. The only thing everyone hears before death, absolute tranquility. I had no regrets dying, at least I get to see my family after a long time.

Everything happened in a flash, my left eye opened slowly and what I saw was unexpected.

I thought it was the after life but when I looked closely I found myself in the arms of Xerxes.

He placed me down as I could hear the roars of the beast once again.

"Are you alright kid?"

He asked as I nodded in fear, he smiled as he turned around to face the beast.

"Alright then."

Wind currents surrounded Xerxes and blew upwards, I was shocked to the core. His jacket flapped vividly in the wind and his hair danced thoroughly.

"What the hell is he..."

I asked myself as the creature launched itself at us with the intent to eat us.

I watched Xerxes join his hands together instantly and took deep breaths. The moment the creature got near us he yelled out a spell.

"Wind dragon blast!"

He emitted a large blast of wind from his mouth which assumed the form of a dragon before it made a direct hit with the face of the beast, it was blown backwards through several trees and crashed heavily on the ground.

The pressure and width of the attack uprooted some trees it passed before it made contact with the beast, which gave rise to the a cloud of dust in our path.

After the beast got up weakly to it's legs, it ran away and Xerxes turned around to face me before he spoke. With my dismay he felt like it was proper to explain everything.

"I think I need to reintroduce myself properly, I am Xerxes Advent, and I am the Beast Sage of Elvesmore."

I couldn't believe me eyes, it was a shocking revelation. A beast what?
