Chapter 18: Night of snow

It was a dry yet cold night, small snowflakes fell from the pitch black sky blinding us from the rough reality. Only the crunching sound of our footsteps could be heard; breaking the silence none of us wanted to stay in. Soft fog appeared as I breathed in, suddenly reflecting the full moon showing itself in the sky. Its brightness shined through the destroyed and shambled buildings of the ghost city, as mist hovered around in the ruins. Though the sight was a pure delight, the cold scent of death and blood covered the world like a curse, it was hard to gaze at it.

Strangely enough, the silenced and unfamiliar scene made me thoughtful; it had been around a month since the incident and I had felt better yet, also kind of… distanced? Like I wasn't myself anymore, it felt refreshing and safe at first. No more useless thoughts making me doubt my every move. But as time passed, those feelings slowly faded, replaced by worries and uncertainty. As if I wasn't my own master, it was like someone else was controlling me. It felt strange, like my thoughts were filtered one by one by an unknown presence. Something outside of my own heart and mind. I felt scared, unsure if I should tell anyone. But worrying my friends was not an option. After all the troubles I'd cause already, wouldn't it be selfish of me to add more to it? It had already been a while since I kept myself shut. Was this a bad idea..? I genuinely and truly couldn't know, but I didn't want more pressure in the group.

It was for the best.

"Couldn't you move faster?"

Without saying a word, Jay went out of Eli's way, obvious annoyance manifesting in his pretty face. The thing was, Jay moved desperately slowly since Edmund was in front of him, leading the way. And this dear Edmund took all the time he wanted, his pace slower than a snail. Even Lilianne, who had the utmost respect for him, wanted to point it out. But then, as she was about to open her mouth and say a word, something in the corner of her eyes caught her attention; it was a soft light.

"Guys look!" Sasha ripped the words out of her mouth, as she pointed toward the strange yellow light, like a ball of energy floating at around 2 meters off the ground, gleaming on the snow around it.

As they approached it fastly, and as their mistrust quickly faded, they started noticing more things. Honestly, it was a strange place to get light from, it was very spacious like a plain wheat field. Why would there be a light, out of any place?

Edmund started speaking, his calm voice bringing everyone back to reality.

"This is most definitely a house."

"Well, yeah? You can see it has a door." As usual, Eli wasn't soft-spoken.

"Do you think there are people in there?" The worried tone coming from Lilianne made everyone feel strangely uneasy; What if there were people in that house? The light was certainly coming from the front window, but how could there be any power left?

"The only way to know is to check it out."

"I'm admiring that courage of yours, Sasha."

"Thanks, Eli."

"Yuri, what do you think about it? Do you think we should check it out?" Jay called him out, yet there was no answer. He turned around, only to see Yuri looking at the ground, pinching his nose like he usually does when he's preoccupied by something.

"Yuri..?"
