Chapter 8: Perspective

Saivas and Jason wasted no time putting together a plan.

The goal was to have his father's assailants become far less mobile so his father could begin hunting for the family.

'Sure, in a couple years I should have enough agency to go hunt myself, but I can't wait that long, so this is the quickest solution' Saivas thought

'Yeah, only now our problem is two-fold.' Jason replied

'Not only do we need to end the group suppressing our father, but we also need to convince him to start hunting again WITHOUT letting him know why he's free from his aggressors'

The first part was tough enough since they didn't know who their target was.

The second part was even more tricky on paper, but Saivas had a feeling desperation might just push his father over the edge without his intervention once the baby was born.

'So, how do we figure out who needs to die?' Saivas asked Jason

'Hold up buckaroo, let's not jump the gun. If they need to die, they need to die. If it can be avoided though, I'd rather not be a murderer' Jason reasoned

Saivas paused

'Was I really just out for blood? I've never so much as even punched somebody... what happened to me?' this realization shocked him enough

'Also, what didn't happen to you?! Aren't you me???'

It was one thing for him to have two voices in his head. They were both his after all, but why the fizzity-uck was he now disagreeing with himself?

On a completely different note, "buckaroo"? Really?

'How the heck should I know? I'm just a product of your psychosis.' Jason replied 'Honestly I'm just glad to be here'

'Great, I really am insane' Saivas thought

'Anyways, whether or not they die doesn't matter until we know who they are and why they want my father dead, any leads?' He asked Jason

'Why not ask your mother? I'm sure she has at least a general idea about the "Why?" don't you think?' Jason suggested

'We can't do that remember? That's a bit too insightful for a 3 year old!' Saivas retorted

'No no, you see, after the conversation yesterday, any child would have some questions right? You're grossly underestimating the power of ignorance my lesser self' Jason replied smugly

'Lesser self? You just got here! Or... just came back? I don't know... either way, screw you dude!'

'So you want me to go screw myself? Ah! Are you coming on to me??? I'm sorry, but my heart already belongs to Elizabeth!' Jason replied with a mock tone of apology

'No wonder I never could make friends...' Saivas thought to himself

'The point is, what kid wouldn't wonder who and why a bunch of bad men want to hurt their father. Think Saivas, think!' Jason continued

Realizing his oversight, Saivas grumbled

'You're still not better than me you virgin…'

'You're a virgin too!'

'Yeah but I'm 3, what's your excuse?'

Jason didn't have a reply for that.

Satisfied with the silence, Saivas went to go find his mother.

His mother was currently sitting in a rocking chair looking out the window.

She was visibly pregnant, in fact, the small wisps of red energy around her abdomen had become much more cohesive. Nearly becoming a consistent stream.

Even still, her warm smile still shined as bright as ever while she watched Stuart train.

"Mama?" Saivas asked

"Yes dear?" his mother replied "Would you like me to read to you today?"

Saivas shook his head, deciding to just dive right into the matter.

"Why do bad men want to hurt my daddy?" He asked inquisitively

Scarlett sighed, she had figured this question was coming after the previous night, but she still couldn't figure out how to properly explain it to a child

"Well, that's not so easy to explain hun" she started

She thought for a moment, then put on an excited smile and asked "Did you know your daddy used to be a hero?"

A hero? His father? That bumbling goofball who was hated by the whole town and couldn't even make a decent living?

"Mama, I'm being serious..." Saivas replied

Scarlett began to laugh

"So am I dear" She said jovially

"In fact your father was one of the strongest heroes there ever was. He's still really strong now, but his strength isn't even half of what it used to be" she lamented

'Half? HALF?! His flow is already bright blue! What's twice that?!' Surely his mother must have been exaggerating

"What happened?" He decided to ask

Sighing again, she explained

"I'm sure you know by now, but your father used to be in the King's Guard. They're a group of really strong guys who solved problems that were too tough for anyone else!" She began

"About 5 years ago, they were given a really tough mission. An item had been stolen from the palace, and they were asked to retrieve it from the thieves"

"Well, the mission went poorly, and in the end, your father had to choose between saving the rest of his teammates, or completing the mission." She had a sad look on her face at that last part

"Without time to think, he chose to save his comrades, destroying the item in the process."

"But mama, that's the obvious choice" Saivas questioned

If that was the case, his father should have been given a medal. If the threat was strong enough to threaten an elite unit like the king's guard, then finding a way for him and his unit to escape was an impressive feat indeed.

His mother only smiled and continued

"You're right of course. Even to this day, your father doesn't regret the decision at all. But when he came back to the palace to report, the king was furious."

"That's ridiculous!" Saivas said out loud

'I'd like to believe that, but I'm sure part of their job was to die for king and country. Without knowing how important that item was, I can't say for sure if that was the right decision' was what he was thinking inwardly

'Still, right or wrong, it was certainly the human decison. It's comforting to know my father is a good man'

Scarlett once again smiled before carrying on

"That's true, but the king gets to decide what's right and wrong in our country. So, at his will, your father was branded a turncoat, and removed from the army" she looked away listlessly

"Sai, a turncoat is somebody who ran away when his country needed him. Since that's the image of your father the king created, that's the way everyone treats him..."

"So the men that want to hurt daddy..." Saivas asked

"I don't know for sure, but they're probably agents of the king looking to keep your father from telling his story" She summarized

'...Fuck!'

This just got way bigger than Saivas had signed up for, he even started getting cold feet.

Saivas thanked his mother and went back to his play pen. Dejected at this new development.

'Quit your whining wimp!' Jason scolded

'We already decided that in this life we would be the masters of our own destiny. I don't care if it's the king's men, the king himself, or even that asshole god! We're going to live our life the way we see fit to the end!'

Saivas of knew this already and agreed.

'Still, I'm pretty sure we're not strong enough to take on the kingdom yet. Looks like this is going to be a stealth operation' Saivas thought

Knowing what they were up against, they finally were able to put together a plan.

A week later, while his parents were sound asleep, Saivas used wind magic to lift himself out the window and into the nighttime air.

Tonight, he was going to make his move.
