Chapter 2: "The Voice in the Ear"

Tan Jinxuan was a scholar from our county. He had strong faith in a form of qigong practice and engaged in it daily without interruption, be it winter or summer. After several months of practice, he felt as though he had made some progress. One day, while sitting cross-legged, he heard a faint voice speaking in his ear. It sounded like the buzzing of a fly and said, "Can you see me?" As soon as he opened his eyes, he couldn't hear the voice anymore. He closed his eyes again, held his breath, and listened. The same voice returned. He thought that this might signify the mastery of the practice and felt secretly pleased.

From that day on, whenever he sat down, he would listen attentively. He made up his mind that when he heard the voice again, he would respond and open his eyes to see what it was. One day, just as he expected, he heard the tiny voice say, "Can you see me?" He softly replied, "Yes, I can see you." Almost immediately, he felt a rustling sound in his ear, as if something was crawling out. Slowly, he opened his eyes to steal a glance and indeed saw a small figure—about three inches tall—with an ugly and fierce appearance resembling a demon. It was walking on the ground. He was astonished and thought to himself that regardless of what was happening, he should observe any changes the figure would undergo.

While observing, he suddenly heard a neighbor knocking on the door to borrow something, calling out. The small figure, upon hearing this, appeared terrified and started to scurry around inside the room in a state of panic, much like a rat searching for its nest. Tan Jinxuan also felt disoriented, as if he had lost his soul, and he didn't know where the small figure had disappeared to. Shortly after, he developed symptoms of madness, continuously crying and screaming. His family sought medical help and treated him with medicine for half a year before he gradually recovered.
