Chapter 8: The lab lady (7)
'I really want to say I just woke up in a conference room, but the place they left me is so… I don't know where I am because they put something over my eyes, on my way. It looks like a secret place, with a cage with monitoring equipment and I'm inside that cage.' It's been 1 hour or 2 since they picked me up, and another after they left me here, rotting without any answers.'
"Sigh… It feels so lonely. I'm not a lab rat, so please let me go. I don't know what's happening either. I'm a student at the university and I've got stuff to do, my exams are coming, so once again let me go."
'Someone is approaching me!' All I can see is the shade of someone coming closer to me but didn't want to come enough to let me see who was there. After all the room is so dark except for cage I'm currently in, which was very full of light.
"No, you are not going anywhere!", that entity said in a casual voice that sounded like a woman. "I just got here because I got a notification to show up here. In my free time, I am summoned to come back to work!"
"Beat me, I got picked up by force while trying to search for a friend."
"I heard that on the way here. So, let's start from the beginning; you were dragged here because you were searching for someone you never met. Don't ask us, we checked! So, let me know, how did you know about Alex and how did you know about his situation?"
As she was finishing her questions, I could see that she was casually dressed. Not like that mattered in the situation I was in, but it was important to at least know something about the place I was. Somehow, I was captivated, or should I say, mesmerized.
"Hello! Are you there? Are you going to answer my questions? Did you fell silent? Did the cat ate your tongue?"
"Ummm, I'm sorry! I was caught off guard thinking. I don't even know where to start. It's a long story."
"Start from the basics. We have time!"
After a while of explaining, she seemed to understand most of it, how I met Alex, what I saw and felt, even though I started very slowly on explaining, and that one was demanding a lot of explanations.
"So that's kind of all. Did you get the hang of it?" I asked that lab lady.
"Yes, it's strange to think about it. You are not a bad one, but a kind one."
"Then, with that being taken care of, can you take these handcuffs off? It's starting to hurt."
"No!"
"Really…?"
"Let me finish. I want to make some tests because from what I am hearing, you are an exception."
"To even what?"
"Well, you are the first one to be awake and have gained powers like those from fictional world."
"Wait, what about Alex? And powers? You mean more than one?"
"Alex is safe, don't worry! And to answer your question, yes, powers and some people affected manifested with multiple powers. From our tests, we discovered that Alex has wind manipulation."
I was staring, clueless.
"Do I really have to explain what this means? Did you watch some anime where there is power related? I mean, he can control the wind, meaning he has wind powers. And I'm thinking you have fire element, but I have to do some tests."
"And… wasn't that supposed to be confidential?"
"It's confidential only if it affects their health. Plus, you already met Alex, so why not? He's perfectly healthy like the others, but they are not able to wake up."
"Do you mind if I ask something related or unrelated?"
"Just do it!"
"Why it's confidential only if it affects their health?"
"Not to scare the masses, and if we don't know the source. But we know it, and I know it might sound weird, but some days ago, there was a meteorite that had a substance that affects only a minority of people. And since you had some fire around you, I'm guessing that you also have it."
"Guessing?? So you don't know for sure. Yeah, I saw that meteorite, but I wasn't able to research more on the internet. I think you were hiding it."
"Yes, we were, and still are because we don't know the full effects of this. After discovering about you, we now know for sure there are also other people awake with powers. Also, we want to use it for our country's military power. Now that we got that clear out of the way, hush, and let me prepare and do my tests!"
