Chapter 117: Kara, the Secretary

After Kara accepted the invitation, Russell briefly explained the current situation of the Justice League to her. He shared some information about the other two members, Gwen and Hulk, including their backgrounds.

When he introduced Hulk, Kara's expression was normal, showing no sign of surprise. However, for some reason, as he started introducing Gwen, a strange expression appeared on Kara's face.

Seeing Kara's peculiar expression, Russell asked her, "What's wrong? Have you heard of Gwen before?"

"Yes, Diana told me about Gwen earlier," Kara replied with a meaningful smile. "Diana mentioned that Gwen is a beautiful, smart, and kind girl."

"What did Diana tell you?" Russell asked, furrowing his brows. He had only been gone for half an hour longer than Diana. He hadn't expected her to talk to Kara about Gwen in such a short time.

"Nothing special. Diana just told me that Gwen is a very nice girl," Kara answered with a smile. While her tone sounded casual, Russell's intuition told him that things couldn't be this simple. If it were just that, Diana wouldn't have discussed Gwen with Kara shortly after they met.

"If you don't want to say, that's fine."

"Anyway, Gwen is now a member of the Justice League. She's also known as Spider-Woman. Since you're close in age, you might become good friends in the future," Russell said, and he activated the intelligent butler system developed by No. 3, projecting a large holographic display in the living room. The screen played news reports about Spider-Woman.

There were also news reports about Hulk, though they were far fewer compared to those about Gwen.

The Hulk had now adopted a new image and had begun his own superhero career as the Green Giant. While he was limited in the types of heroics he could participate in, after three months of effort, the Hulk had garnered a group of fans of his own.

At least now, when the Hulk walked on the streets, no one would refer to him as a monster anymore.

Once Russell had given Kara a brief introduction about Gwen, Hulk, and some information about the Justice League, Diana's voice came from the kitchen, announcing that dinner was ready.

A few minutes later, the three of them started to enjoy their dinner. Though lacking the romantic candlelit setting, Diana had prepared an authentic meal that suited Russell's taste.

Diana was skilled in the kitchen, and the dinner atmosphere was relaxed. However, for some reason, as Russell tasted Diana's cooking, he had an odd feeling he couldn't quite put into words. Despite being only a few years older than Kara, he felt like the atmosphere at the dinner table was a bit off.

Tonight's dinner didn't feel like a meal among newly acquainted friends but rather like a family dinner—himself and Diana as the parents, and Kara as their recently grown-up daughter attending college.

While Russell didn't say anything, Diana quickly noticed his unease and asked gently, "What's wrong? Is the food not good tonight?"

"No, it's delicious. I just haven't had food you've made in a long time."

Although things felt a bit off, Russell's survival instinct kicked in.

While enjoying the dinner, Diana asked Kara about various aspects of the DC world. While Diana had become disillusioned with the human world, her mother and people were still in that universe.

Kara answered Diana's questions in detail and continuously praised Diana's culinary skills, claiming it was the best meal she had ever had. This greatly delighted Diana.

This girl has quite good emotional intelligence!

Comparing Kara's drastically different attitudes when answering him and when answering Diana, Russell felt that obtaining Kryptonian heritage would be even more challenging.

After eating their fill, Kara volunteered to clean up. She had initially wanted to wash the dishes, but her plan was dashed when she saw the dishwasher in the kitchen.

In the living room, Russell poured Scotch whiskey for himself and Diana. He gave Kara a bottle of juice.

"I don't want this. I want whiskey too."

Seeing the whiskey in Russell and Diana's hands, Kara raised an eyebrow and said to Russell.

"You're not yet 21 years old, not of legal drinking age!"

Russell rejected Kara without hesitation.

"I'm not American; I'm a Kryptonian. Kryptonians aren't bound by American laws!"

Kara responded seriously.

While Russell knew Kara was trying to justify herself, he had to admit she had a point.

None of the three people in the living room were Americans, and from a legal standpoint, they were all illegal immigrants. Russell was not only an illegal immigrant but also had broken numerous American laws, including murder, kidnapping, tax evasion, endangering public safety, and aiding illegal organizations in unlawful activities.

If everything were to be executed according to the law, he would either be executed or sentenced to hundreds of years in prison.

"If you want some, you can get it from the liquor cabinet. Don't touch anything aged over 50 years; those are my collectibles!"

Russell's habit of drinking whiskey was nurtured by Diana. Since Diana liked to have a small drink before bed, living with her had influenced Russell over time.

Just as Russell finished speaking, Kara swiftly appeared in front of the liquor cabinet, selecting a bottle just as if she were choosing a piece of jewelry.

After selecting a bottle, Kara returned to the living room with a bottle of Macallan 40-year-old sherry cask limited edition whiskey.

Seeing Kara's choice of Macallan 40-year-old, Russell raised an eyebrow.

This girl has good taste!

The Macallan 40-year-old sherry cask she had chosen was a limited edition with only 465 bottles worldwide. Russell had pulled some strings to acquire a few bottles.

Back in the living room, Kara poured herself a glass of whiskey with a delighted expression on her delicate face.

She actually knows how to drink?

Russell was starting to see Kara in a different light. For a Kryptonian, the 44% alcohol content of Macallan 40-year-old was unlikely to make her feel intoxicated. Excluding the alcohol, Kara could only enjoy the taste of the drink.

As Kara's look of delight gradually faded, Diana exchanged a meaningful glance with her.

Understanding Diana's hint, Kara put down her glass and turned to Russell, who was seated beside Diana.

"I've joined the Justice League to resolve my superhero identity issue, but I also need a normal job and identity as a cover."

"No problem. What kind of job would you like? I can help you arrange it."

Unaware of the danger at the moment, Russell took a sip of the whiskey in his glass and said slowly.

"I want to be your secretary!" Kara said earnestly.

Hearing Kara's words, Russell nearly spat out the whiskey in his mouth.

"Wait, you said you want to be what?"

"I said, I want to be your secretary!"

Kara repeated herself.

Russell ignored Kara's serious expression and turned to Diana, who was sitting beside him.

"I didn't say this to her. I've never mentioned this to her!"
