Chapter 2: Chapter One: Crashing Into An Immortal On A Rainy Day

Most people don't get to meet immortals. They're rarer than astatine and as shy of humans as pangolins. Ranyu never imagined he'd ever see one, much less talk to one. How could he have thought that he'd end up crashing into one that Saturday morning?

It had been a very normal Saturday morning. He'd woken up depressed. He'd opened the curtains and got even more depressed when he saw that the weather was all gray and gloomy. Things got even sadder when he went to eat breakfast and found that the milk had gone sour. He had also apparently forgotten to buy bread. Or cereal. Or anything else. Feeling very pitiful Ranyu stood in front of his empty cupboards and pondered why he was still keeping himself alive. He wondered if it really was worth it. A scary thought occured to him and for a moment he stood there and considered it.

Five minutes later he pushed his bike out into the street, a grocery bag over his shoulder. He'd decided he'd rather buy milk instead.

He hadn't made it to the end of the street when suddenly the sky lowered, drizzling rain over him. Ranyu thought about turning around and going back home but he was already wet. Sighing sadly to himself he pedaled onward under the pelting drops of cold rain.

He had only one thought as he pushed forward—he was indeed very pathetic.

The blast of thunder and lightning hit out of nowhere, spreading blinding light everywhere, and before Ranyu could understand what was happening he was sent flying through the air as something crashed heavily into him.

He scraped over the tar road on his elbows and hit his head on the sidewalk. The bike fell on top of him and and grocery bag dropped over his eyes. From around him thunder growled deeply before slowly fading away.

Dazed and shocked, Ranyu slowly liftedhis head. Had he just been hit by lightning?!

He peeled the bag from his head and looked around dizzily. The sight that met his eyes was completely different than the one he'd been seeing just moments before. The road was all cracked up and had a huge whole blown in the middle of it. In it, in a fog of smoke and dust Ranyu caught sight of a figure.

What the hell? Ranyu rubbed his eyes in an attempt to clear to image from them. How did this happen? He looked at his bike. It was completely bent out of shape. Like it had ran into a truck.

Ranyu looked worriedly at the person sprawled out in the hole. He wasn't moving at all.

It couldn't possibly be that Ranyu had ran him over? No, perhaps the lightning had hit him. But that wouldn't explain why his bike looked the way it did. It wasn't an argument that would hold up in court, would it? Ranyu was getting stressed the more he thought. If that person was dead he might end up being accused of involuntary manslaughter! Ranyu rushed forward. That person should not be dead!

The person didn't look very good. He was bruised all over and had a big cut across his chest that was seeping out an alarming amount of blood. Ranyu dropped on his knees beside the person and bent forward and reached out a trembling hand. He held his fingers under that person's nose. He didn't look alive. He was as white as candle wax and his eyes were closed. There was a suspicious smear of blood on his lips too. "Come on," Ranyu murmured anxiously. "Please, please don't be dead." But there didn't seem to be any air coming from his nostrils. He'd stopped breathing!

Ranyu had never done CPR in his life but now wasn't the time to doubt his ability. He'll just do as he saw them do it on TV. No matter what! This person could not die!

He grabbed the person's nose and pinched it shut and took a deep breath. He squeezed his eyes shut and trying hard not to think about ot as kissing put his mouth over that of the man.

A scent of ozone and smoke filled Ranyu's senses. It was sharp and unlike anything Ranyu had ever smelled before. It was making him a little dizzy and for a second he seemed to forget where he was and what he was doing.

A hand suddenly grabbed hold of him and for the second time that day Ranyu found himself flying through the air. To bewildered to stop himself, Ranyu crashed face first into the road.

A furious voice filled the air: "What are you doing to me, you impure human scum!"

Ranyu lifted homself up from the ground, whimpering in pain as he did. This time he was bruised even worse than before. That person must be insanely strong. "I'm sorry," he began as he turned around, "I was just trying. . . ."

He stopped abruptly. In front of him, smoke seeping from his robes, stood a figure that seemed to come right out of some ancient cultivation novel. Dressed in silver and blue silk robes he was as tall as a tree and as straight as one, and had long black hair billowing around him like cloak. Even though he was covered in dust and blood there was something terribly majestic about him.

His eyes, so dark they seemed to be pitless pools of baylck shadow, glared at Ranyu without a glimpse of friendliness. He was clearly very upset. He pointed at Ranyu. "What have you done to me?" His face twisted. "How dare you steal my memories! Give them back!"

Ranyu's mouth opened wide. He had a very distinct impression that he must be dreaming. "I didn't . . . I didn't do anything like that! I just . . . I just ran into you!" How could he steal someone's memories?

But that man didn't seem convinced. He strode forward and snatched Ranyu up from the ground as easily as if he was a bit of washing that had fallen from the clothes line. Holding Ranyu up in the air he brought Ranyu close to his face. His eyes narrowed. "Do you think I'm a fool, human? I won't let you go," he hissed, "until you give it back!"
