Chapter 50: WTF

Naruto embarked on his school journey, reaching the appropriate age for formal education. However, life within the confines of the classroom turned out to be a lot less exciting than he had anticipated. The curriculum at Ninja School was filled with the most fundamental teachings, and it felt like he was just scratching the surface, barely beyond the basics. In fact, they were still in their first grade, with a long way to go before delving into more advanced ninja techniques.

....

A few years had passed.

While navigating the ins and outs of school life, Naruto eventually crossed paths with the other members of the Konoha Twelve, the strongest young ninja in their generation. With the exception of Hyuga Neji, Tenten, and Rock Lee, who were a year ahead, the rest of the formidable twelve were in the same class.

Due to Naruto's solitary training in the back mountains, he had yet to form any strong connections with his classmates, including the Hinata, whom he had met only once before. As a result, he found himself in a somewhat awkward position. He lacked the familiarity of friends, and it seemed that their parents had gone to great lengths to ensure he felt isolated.

However, Naruto was unfazed. He paid no heed to Sakura, or to Sasuke. While Sakura was once the subject of the original Naruto's affections, and Sasuke was his eternal rival, these relationships held no significance to the new Naruto.

In fact, Sasuke had an even deeper connection as the reincarnation of Indra's Chakra, but Naruto couldn't be bothered by such matters. His primary activity at school had become quite clear: sleeping.

Disenchanted with the dullness of school life, Naruto resorted to escaping to the back mountain every night for intensive training, only to doze off during the school day. If he couldn't use Shadow Clones for learning, he'd make the most of his time by getting some much-needed rest.

Then, in the midst of one of his daydreams, a piece of chalk came flying his way, expertly aimed by Iruka. "Wow," Naruto exclaimed with a mixture of surprise and amusement.

Suddenly, in a classroom filled with the hushed drone of a math lesson, Naruto found himself on the brink of an unforeseen crisis. As the math problem loomed closer to him, it seemed like an incoming ninja attack, and his instincts kicked in. In a flash, he subconsciously tilted his head, narrowly evading the figurative shuriken of mathematics, and snapped his eyes wide open.

This lightning-quick reflex was the product of years of training, both as a Shinobi and a life spent running through forests and mountains. It was a testament to his ever-present vigilance.

Naruto's eyes darted around, and they locked onto Iruka, his . The surprise in Iruka's eyes was evident, but he wasted no time in addressing the situation. With a hint of irritation, he bellowed, "Are you sleeping in my class, Naruto? Snoring, too? And you already know the answer to this question?"

Iruka punctuated his exasperation by rapping his hand on the blackboard. "Come up here and solve it," he demanded.

Naruto scratched his head, realizing that he might have let out an inadvertent snore. His fault, no doubt.

As the other students in the classroom suppressed their laughter behind their hands, they were eager to witness Naruto's predicament. It had been a rocky start to the school year, thanks to Naruto's stubborn demeanor and the baggage of his parentage. Now, it seemed that everyone was awaiting his misstep for their amusement.

However, a few students displayed a different reaction. One with a pineapple-shaped head propped his chin in his hand, appearing utterly uninterested, as if he would have preferred a peaceful nap instead. A chubby kid covertly munched on snacks, focusing more on the food than Naruto's situation. Meanwhile, another student, possibly Sasuke, had already drifted into a trance, lost in his thoughts.

Then there was Hinata, who watched Naruto's predicament with genuine concern. She worried that Naruto might falter in front of the class, and her gaze was filled with empathy.

As Naruto lifted his eyes to scrutinize the blackboard, he was met with a rather elementary arithmetic problem. In stark contrast to the extravagant and complex jutsu many of the other students attempted, the task was straightforward, with the problem boldly written in large characters: "What is twelve plus thirteen?" and "What is twenty-five minus thirteen?"

"WTF?"

Naruto couldn't help but feel a pang of disbelief. Were these questions really this basic? Did the school genuinely underestimate his abilities?

Almost spitting out a mouthful of frustration rather than blood, Naruto sighed inwardly, more in amusement than anger.

With a slight grin, he turned to Iruka, arms outstretched in an exaggerated gesture. "Seriously? Is this it? You're underestimating me, Mr. Iruka?" Naruto's final address bore a hint of mischief.

Iruka, with an air of unapologetic sarcasm, retorted, "There's no room for regret, Naruto. You've earned it."

With an evil fire burning in his eyes, Naruto grabbed a piece of chalk, quickly scribbled the answers on the blackboard, and turned back to his seat. Despite his confident swagger, he knew he had just solved, "twelve plus thirteen equals twenty-five," and "twenty-five minus thirteen equals twelve."

As he made his way back to his desk, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of remorse. The look of disappointment in the students' eyes, moments ago, seemed all too familiar, like a reflection of his own past.
