Chapter 3: Trying to survive a cat's nonsense

Bob was once again alone in the dark tunnels. This time however, he had the ability to light himself on fire. He also had the light sphere, but after remembering what the monster had done to his previous lightsource, he was not sure that having one was a good thing. 'I am still not sure of what to think about magic being a thing, but I doubt that cat will actually give me any sort of explanation. It will probably come back after a while, but the pile of flesh lying around might attract more monsters.' After thinking for a bit, Bob decided that getting away from the remains of the giant rat was for the best. He wasn't sure as to what he might encounter if he stayed there.

After walking as silently as possible for a while, Bob noticed that there were two paths in front of him. Seeing no noticeable difference beetwen the two, he went on the right path because it felt right. However, his instincts betrayed him as there was an other giant rat right around the corner.

Bob tried to back away slowly, but the beast had noticed him and was running straight at him. Since his magic was more of a danger to himself then to the rat, he made the decision to not use it. Instead, he once again used the legendary technique known as running away. Thankfully, the beast seemed to want to destroy the light orb before killing him, so he would probably be fine for now. Despite this, Bob was painfully aware that he couldn't run forever. He would soon grow too tired to outpace the bloodthirsty monster.

Eventually, Bob came to a conclusion. He had to try to use magic or he would simply die. He closed his eyes while running to concentrate on the mental image of a fireball. He felt some sort of energy gathering in the fire gem, so he assumed that his magic did something. Because of this, he released his concentration before opening his eyes to look around. As it turns out, he should have stayed focus on his casting. As soon as he opened his eyes, the fireball that was levitating in front of his face blew up. The explosion wasn't too big, but it was still enough to knock Bob to the ground and slightly injure him. Luckily, the giant rat was also startled by it's prey blowing itself up and didn't dare to get closer. Seeing this, the very competent mage decided that his only hope was to somehow throw an other fireball to the monster without blowing himself up.

Focusing on his magic, Bob managed to make an other fireball. It looked extremely unstable, but it didn't blow up. Bob then proceeded to will for the fireball to move.

He completely missed the rat, but managed to hit the cave's wall causing part of the tunnel to collapse onto the monster, burrying it.

'That worked?' wondered a genuinely surprised Bob. The explosion was far stronger then when he accidentally detonated his magic. It was probably because he had actually intended for the fireball to be letal this time around. Bob thought that his oponent was most likely dead this time, but he did not want to stick around. The noise from the collapse was likely to attract more monsters, and he did not want to deal with that, especially since he was injured.

Walking away from the location, Bob decided to take the opprtunity to reflect on everything that was happening to him. According to Cat, he didn't travel to an other world or die, but he wasn't too sure that that was true. After all, giant rats, talking cats and magic aren't supposed to exist on Earth. However, the cat was talking as if it came from an other world, so it might have come along with the monsters. No matter what, he was stuck in a cave system filled with things that wanted to kill him and an other thing that didn't seem to care too much about his survival since it just left him alone. It did say it would be back after taking care of some bandits, wich meant that there weren't just brainless monsters in here.

'I am absolutely going to die,' thought Bob, 'All those novels I read made magic seem extremely usefull, but my magic is probably more dangerous to myself then to my enemies. What would someone smart do in this situation?' Bob never found the answer to that question, since he wasn't smart enough. However, the answer would most likely be to stop walking around and to find some corner to hide. But once again, he did not figure that out.

After a while spent walking in the tunnels, Bob heard voices. After making sure that he wasn't hearing voices in his head yet, he pondered about what to do. The ones talking could help him, but there was also a chance that they were some of the bandits mentionned by Cat.

'I should probably go take a look. What's the worst thing that could happen? Wait, when I say it like that it sounds like an horrible idea. Nevermind, I am leaving,' decided Bob before turning around and walking the other way.

While Bob would have liked to get help, he doubted that they would help much even if they weren't bandits. If that cat was anything to go by, people from other worlds seemed to be a slightly excentric. They would probably give him an other dangerous item and leave him alone to figure things out.

'Why am I in so much danger after coming in contact with magic stuff? Usually, in novels, people get a system to help them out and make them overpowered,' complained Bob. 'Well, complaining is useless. Wait, I haven't tried to say status. Honestly I wouldnt even be surprised if it worked.'

"Status"

A screen poped up in front of Bob.
