Chapter 7: A lyre And The Renard II

So last chap I got the hairstyle wrong. I copied it from the wiki without looking into it much but that wasn't smart. It's now updated.

It seems because the hairstyle isn't possible irl there isn't rly a name for it so I'll just name it 'hair that resembles that of cat ears.'

.

As we saw uncle Bob disappear into the temple. The kids started to disperse, leaving only the four children I had trained with.

It was then that Mikoto turned to me with a curious look and asked, "Hey, Nagisa-dono. Do you know how to play the lyre?"

"No, I actually don't." I answered her honestly. I knew a little about the musical arts from the books I had read but that's also it. I didn't know any songs and didn't have any song sheets to base off of. "But I'll figure it out." I stated with absolute confidence. Already planning on how to make a song of my own.

Snapping myself out of my thought, I turned to the group only to see them nodding at each other before Ouka came forward.

"Nagisa, as you are now officially part of the group, you may not know but…"

I cut him off, asking, "What?" with a raised eyebrow. "That you guys sneaked every night out of the orphanage to do something? I know."

"WHA- How!!" Ouka exclaimed in disbelief.

"We're roommates idiot." I stated a matter-of-factly "Of course, I would know that you sneaked out, especially if it's someone as loud as you." I added.

This caused the females of the group to stare daggers into Ouka's back to which he could only smile awkwardly.

"So anyway, what are you guys doing?" I asked.

"Well… Nagisa-dono. You'll have to find out. Come back here when the sun sets." Mikoto's instructions left me puzzled, but I didn't dwell on it much. I would find out eventually.

With nothing else to discuss, I exchanged goodbyes with the others and went into the forest to take my plan into action.

.

After walking for a few minutes into the forest following a path that was all too familiar to me, I climbed up a tree and lay on a thick branch where I could lay comfortably.

This was the spot I would spend most of my days reading books. I picked up my newly acquired lyre and ran my fingers across the strings.

And wat came out was an enchanting melody that started with a light, airy tune and gradually becoming heavy.

"Yeah, it's not going to be as simple as I thought." I chuckled to myself as I experimented what kind of sound every string could produce.

After trying every string and combination, knowing which notes belong to which string. I searched for my notebook.

"Where did I put it…"

After looking around for a while, I spotted my notebook higher up in the tree, and after successfully retrieving it, I started to scribble down some notes and started to play again.

But what came out this time wasn't the angelic melody, but a cacophony of conflicting tunes, creating a chaotic soundscape.

With a sigh, I acknowledged, "Well... I knew it wouldn't work perfectly on the first try, but this is worse than I expected."I said to no one in particular as I went back at it again.

Scribbling in my notes and playing the tunes. And before I knew it, the sun was beginning to set on the horizon.

"…It's time to meet the others." I mused as I leaped from the tree and went to my room, dropped off my lyre and other unnecessities.

And without further delay I went towards the courtyard where I rendezvoused with the others.

"Yo." I greeted with a raised hand.

"Nagisa-dono. You made it." Mikoto exclaimed upon seeing my figure.

"Everyone ready to go?" Ouka asked but I first asked a question of my own.

"Does lord Takemikazuchi and lady Tsukuyomi know about this?" I asked genially curious if this was really allowed.

"Of course. Lady Tsukuyomi even encouraged us to do this." Ouka replied, not a single waver in his eyes or tone, letting me believe that he was telling the truth.

But I still turned to the others for further confirmation and after all of them nodded the only thing I could do was shrug it off.

"All right." I spoke.

"Let's go. Follow me." He declared as he lead the way into the forest with the others including myself trailing behind him.

.

We sprinted through the forest towards a nearby mountain, Ouka leading the way. And after about half an hour, we finally escaped the vast arrays of trees and were met by a imposing mansion.

'Wait, isn't this the Sanjouno residence?' I thought in disbelief.

The only reason I knew of this place was because they donate food to the orphanage and thus had the chance to meet the head of the Sanjouno family and his daughter during a brief thank-you visit.

"Hey, what are you going to do?!" I asked one last time with more urgency to my voice as I saw the group approaching the mansion.

"Breaking out Haruhime-dono of course." Mikoto said with a wide smile plastered across her face.

'Wait, no. But if they find out… then what about the food they donate??' I thought this was too high a risk for the orphanage, but it was already too late. They were already next to the wall.

"Aagh, fuck it." I muttered to myself as I dashed towards the wall and joining the group.

When I arrived, the group smiled as they started to climb the wall with swift and nimble movements, a testimony of the many times they climbed this wall. And I soon followed.

Although not as fast as the others.

After successfully climbing the wall, I settled down on it like the others. I then turned my head towards the building only to spot a child standing on the balcony of the second floor. She seemed to be about our age, and she had long blond hair with green eyes. But what stood out the most were the fox ears and tail protruding from her.

'This… Why is Lady Haruhime standing there. Are we already busted.' I worried inwardly with a grim face but what happened next flushed all the colors from my expression.

She jumped.

She jumped from the balcony towards our group, but luckily or intentionally Ouka and Mikoto managed to catch her.

"Let's go." Ouka declared as he jumped off the wall and sprinted back into the forest once again, with the others following him, including the young lady.

'Wait… what just happened… what is this? An abduction? A breakout?' Still in a daze, I sat quietly on the wall before finally jolting into action and following the group.

"Come on quickly!!" Ouka yelled out.

"Aagh, waiit!!" I screamed as I struggled to keep up with the group.

And after traversing through the forest for a while once more, we arrived before a vast flower field. It was filled with white blooms, where fireflies danced around the blossoms.

"Huh?" I then heard a bewildered voice on my right and turned to the source only to see the blond-haired lady staring at me. "Lady Mikoto, who is this?" She asked.

"Oh, that's right you haven't met yet. This is Nagisa-dono. Today he joined the training program, so we invited him to come and play. He is a little introverted, but he is a good guy." Mikoto explained.

Well, it's true that I did the bare minimum of socializing with the other kids so I could 'train' longer, but now I have such a reputation…Well it's not that I care much about those things.

"Oh, I see." The girl nodded in acknowledgment. "Then, hello. It's nice to meet you mister Nagisa. My name is Sanjouno Haruhime." She introduced herself with a slight bow.

"Oh yes, likewise." I greeted awkwardly as I wasn't well versed in the noble etiquette.

I then took a second look at her to see her colors, and for a first time, I saw a golden color with a hint of green mixed in it.

'What does gold mean?' I wondered but I then heard Ouka's voice who was already in the flower-field.

"Come on guys!!" He screamed as he ran further into the field.

"Ah, wait!" Haruhime said as she also began to run.

But before long.

*BAM*

She fell face first into the ground.

'Wha– 'I thought in shock as me and Mikoto sprung in action and went to where Haruhime fell.

"Is everything okay, Harumime-dono?" Mikoto asked as I helped her get Haruhime back up her feet.

"Hahaha, you really are like a hero in the book lady Mikoto. And Nagisa looks like the hero's helper 'count Verdigris' haha." She chuckled with a big smile.

"'Count Verdigris'?" I asked curiously. "Who is that?"

"Oh, it's from a story I read that originated from the west. Haruhime explained. "It's about a hero who saves mankind from monsters with his party, and Count Verdigris is a part of that party."

Then Mikoto chimed in. "Haruhime-dono enjoys reading books so she knows a lot of hero stories. She doesn't have permission to go outside so she spends her days indoors reading. That's why Takemikazuchi-dono encouraged us to help her." Mikoto then began to explain the situation.

'Oh, I see.' I thought as I looked at Haruhime with a little sympathy.

But Haruhime didn't seem to see my gaze as she quickly got up again before her face tasted the earths soil once again.
