Chapter 3: Chapter Two

It's been a while since something has gotten his attention this much.

But this was something that his old self wouldn't allow to ignore.

The boy could see a child that looked around his own age with long white hair currently trying to steal bread... Keyword, trying, as the opportunity refused to show itself.

The boy sat down on the roof where he was observing the situation and waited, interested in what the other child would do while taking advantage of the moment to observe her.

She was practically wearing rags since the dress that reached below her knees was torn in multiple places and her attire was lacking any shoes.

Humming in thought, he observed as the food stand that she was targeting finally got a customer and she took the chance to dash in.

Unfortunately for her, she was a child, meaning that she was slow, but that gave her an advantage since she was so small, she could easily traverse the busy street.

The white-haired girl managed to grab onto a loaf fresh loaf of bread and start running. The boy raised an eyebrow as the chubby man who was selling the said bread started chasing her. The funny thing was, the man was so slow the two were going at the same speed.

Suppressing a chuckle, the boy stood up to follow. It wasn't every day that you see kids surviving on their own, so his interest was piqued.

Dashing from rooftop to rooftop, the blue-haired boy watched as the girl tried to lose the obese man in the crowd, but that didn't really work out since the people were giving the man space to not get run over.

Finally, the girl ducked into an alley that he knew was a dead-end. Sighing exasperatedly, he jumped to one of the buildings and looked down to see what would happen and if he would have to intervene in any way.

To the boy's surprise, there was a hole big enough for the girl to crawl out of. He frowned, that wasn't there the last time he checked.

Nodding in appreciation at the clever move, he turned his own attention back to what he was doing... He was going to rob someone, obviously.

___

It wasn't until two weeks later that he saw the girl again. However, the state she was in was slightly concerning. The giant purple bruise that was present on her cheek was unsettling, she looked skinnier too.

Upon closer inspection, he could see that she was barely standing on her feet.

Did she get caught? Or was he wrong and she had a home and was being abused...

The boy took a deep breath and sighed. Here he was, worrying about someone he did not know. Hesitating for a moment, he finally turned around and started minding his own business, walking down the road.

That lasted only until he heard a shout from a man.

Scowling, the boy turned around and spotted the girl running away with a couple of apples in her hand.

Sucking in a breath through his teeth, he leaned forward, the muscles in his legs tensing, and dashed forward.

Catching up and surpassing the man in the blink of an eye, he reached the girl and swooped her off her feet, literally. The yelp that he got from her went ignored as he jumped up to a roof. Knowing that this place wasn't particularly safe, considering what certain people could do, the boy did not stop moving as he jumped from rooftop to rooftop.

Finally coming to a stop after a few seconds, he looked down at the girl who was squirming in his arms and placed her feet first on the roof he halted on.

The girl took a few steps back, looking at the boy suspiciously. The only thing she got for her efforts was a raised eyebrow.

"You okay?"

She kept her silence, only narrowing her mismatched eyes, with one being gray and the other green.

The staredown continued for a few seconds, neither of them deciding to back down in the staring contest. Finally, it was she who decided to speak up.

"Who are you?"

Her voice was high pitched, she tried to make it sound deeper than it actually was., kind of cute, in a child trying to be serious kind of way.

"Luke, just Luke, and who might you be?"

Again, she kept her silence and he was getting tired of the games she was trying to play. What was her problem? Didn't he just save her from the man who was catching up to her?

"Get me down from here."

The boy, Luke, blinked at the demand. Well, wasn't she bossy? But there was one problem with her thought process.

"Why should I? I just saved you, for all that's good for, you owe me."

The boy shrugged nonchalantly, If this was the thanks he would get after helping, he would just leave. This wasn't an anime where the main character just took the attitude of a female character.

She scowled, which was just funny on her face, and tossed him an apple.

Catching it effortlessly, Luke looked down at it for a moment before chuckling.

Point taken.
