Chapter 2: World Studies

World Studies. A course that is required to be taken by everyone who wants to get a high-paying job. One must learn about everything that could ever happen on a planet, be it; the formation of the first life form, the extinction of all life, or the creation of a new invention, as well as the actions one should take to direct the course of the planet's growth. The best part about World Studies is the short amount of time it takes to complete, with the average course length being a negligible one hundred years.

When one begins learning about world Studies they are given a simulation. The simulation can perfectly emulate an entire universe. Although, one is only given the authority to enact decisions on one planet. Otherwise, it becomes too difficult to keep track of all the different parts of the universe, not to mention making sure that they are working properly. Only the people of the upper echelons are allowed those kinds of projects.

Throughout World Studies one is graded based on three criteria; the technological development of one's world, the biological development of one's world, and the events that occur in them. For every new life form, invention, or event in history that has an impact on the world, one is given points. These points are how one is…

Lifting my gaze from the flyer, but still looking downwards, I wonder where I went wrong. Back then I was hopeful of a new life, of a chance to climb the ladder and better myself. I graduated top of my class in every subject, in a class that was full of the elite. And yet, all I ever do now is sit at a desk and type away, while everyone else has moved on and become members of the Great Ones.

Peering through the glass to my right, I see thousands upon thousands of cubicles lined up in perfect rows that stretch as far as I can see. These cubicles are extremely simple, being pure white with not a single speck of discolouration anywhere on them, the only thing standing out being the black monitor resting on the metallic pure white desk. Beside the desk stands one chair, which is pure white as well. Each cuticle is roughly two meters squared and only has one small trash can.

The strange thing about these cubicles is that they look uninhabited. Nothing visible rests inside them, but the sound of keyboards typing resounds all throughout the room. You could see the depression caused by the force acting on each individual key as they were pressed down, but not the one pressing the key down.

Turning away from the glass, I look at my room. The only difference between my room and theirs is that mine is slightly bigger, at a wondrous four meters squared, having a single extra monitor, and a phone that looked like it was from the 1980s, similarly being all white.

Suddenly, the phone rang, breaking my train of thought and causing me to freeze solid. liquids began pouring from every pore in my body, my breath began to race like the revolutions of a centrifuge, and my emotions began to go haywire. Thinking that the only reason that the phone would ever ring is if something went wrong, caused my thoughts to become frantic. Because if something went wrong, it would not end well for me.

Quickly reaching out my hand and grasping the phone I briefly pause, wondering whether it's worth it to pick up and not just leave. In a desperate act of self-denial, I picked up the phone and brought it close enough that I could hear it. Then a robotic and monotone voice explodes from the speaker and quickly tells me,

"Report to room 1Z on floor A." Then before I can even react the phone automatically hangs up and all I can hear is the long beep continuing to sound. Slowly lowering the phone back onto its holder. I raise my body out of my chair, turn around, and begin walking towards the door.

Each step feels like I'm digging my own grave, willingly offering up myself to the Great Ones. The time between each step extends to unknown amounts of time and requires untold amounts of effort. Briefly regretting the fact that I picked up the phone, and feeling pure unadulterated rage towards whoever messed up, I hasten my steps to get this over with.

Once I reach the door I'm briefly surrounded by a glow before I hear a click and the door instantly retreats somewhere, revealing a hallway that similarly looks all white matching the  colour scheme. But, this hall resembles the halls of a hotel. Every two and a half meters appears a door with a number on it, alternating to the left and right. Looking to the right I see the numbers on the door counting down and to the left counting up. Turning towards the right I begin walking, only to briefly turn around and glance at my door reading 23301A, and continue walking towards room 1Z.

Upon reaching room 1Z, I take notice of the difference in the surroundings. These walls have more colour than the monochromatic colour scheme of my floor, having blues and greens and violets and turquoises in a whirlwind of colour making no sense whatsoever, further deepening the majesty of the Great Ones. Additionally, the area outside of the room has couches and coffee tables, plants and art, and carpets and vases.

The moment I knocked on the door it created a sound that reverberated through the air before instantly disappearing, allowing me entry into the room where the Great Ones stay. Moments later a path appears leading to a circular platform, roughly 4 meters in diameter, past the circular platform there lies a void, and past that is a huge semi-circular wall nearly 5 meters high. This wall encapsulates half of the room starting from where the circular platform begins. On the wall, there were 12 chairs with beings of various shapes and sizes sitting upon them.

Each being, or Great One as they were more commonly known, was a leader in their field, holding nearly unattainable achievements that caused shifts in the entire cosmos. Being in their presence was exhilarating, disheartening, humbling, and terrifying. This was all because not one person who has claimed to have seen the Great ones has been able to describe them, be it for numerous unknown reasons.

After stumbling towards the centre platform and finally reaching the centre. The two beings in the centre raised their hand in a gesture to stop simultaneously, the one on the left raising their right hand and the one on the right on their left. After this action I found my body unable to move, each limb paralyzed, not even my breath able to escape me.

"You have been judged." These were the only words said by the two beings in the centre simultaneously once again. Immediately after hearing these words, my senses began to dull. My eyesight became blurry and then began darkening until I could no longer see; my body collapsed on the floor as feeling left my body; My sense of taste and smell concurrently left my body. And as my hearing was doing the same, I heard one light knock reverberate through the air.
