Chapter 2: borrow money

"Slap! Slap!" One slap after another, a relentless barrage of blows. Clark showed no restraint as he delivered a dozen slaps in quick succession. Monica's mother soon fell unconscious, collapsing like a broomstick against the wall.

"Have you gone insane, Clark!" Monica stared in shock, her voice high-pitched and disbelieving.

"Insane?" Clark gave a cruel smile, and his murderous intent ignited. He intended to make these people feel the pain of their flesh being torn apart, to experience the same agony and despair he had felt before his death.

Clark callously crushed Monica's mother's fragile leg bones underfoot and then turned his icy gaze toward Monica.

"Clark! What are you planning to do?"

"What am I planning to do?" Clark leaned forward slightly, his cold tone sending shivers down her spine.

Monica seemed to sense something, trembling and panicking, she retreated into the room and locked the door.

"I've called the police! They're outside!" Trembling, Monica activated the speakerphone on her phone, and the sound of the police siren could be heard faintly from outside. The alarm was answered.

On the eve of the apocalypse, accidents were frequent. Faintly, they could hear police sirens and ambulances outside. Hearing the alarm being answered, Clark stopped in his tracks, standing still as if contemplating something. He tilted his head, staring fixedly at the tightly locked door.

With only three days until the apocalypse, getting entangled with them would surely waste a lot of time. Wasting time equated to squandering the opportunity of rebirth, which wasn't worth it. These scoundrels had no right to waste his precious time. So...

Three days! Clark gave a cruel smile and turned slowly.

Three days later, the apocalypse would arrive. He wanted to see how, without his desperate protection, Monica and her family, who were like useless waste, would survive in this post-apocalyptic world. He hoped that they would retain these expressions on their faces even when faced with zombies.

Death and that door had completely transformed Clark in this life. He would only be kind to those who deserved his kindness. He would no longer stubbornly hold onto his inner naivety, allowing himself to be used by others. He would become stronger and survive in this cruel post-apocalyptic world.

Since he had decided to wait three days before taking action, Clark didn't care anymore. If Monica wanted to call for help and create trouble for him, he wouldn't mind dealing with it when he passed by this place.

Clark suppressed his hatred; unnecessary emotions would only cloud his judgment. In the time ahead, he needed to prepare and gather enough supplies before the apocalypse. He also had to prepare for the awakening of his supernatural talents.

Three days later, the game of the apocalypse would begin. The zombie virus would spread, otherworldly creatures would appear from different dimensions, and numerous supernatural events would sweep across the globe. People would gain data-driven panels, like in a video game. A few lucky ones would obtain supernatural abilities at energy nodes, awakening their talents.

In his previous life, he had been hindered by Monica's family and missed the opportunity to become an awakened one. Now, he would change everything! The first step to changing his fate.

"FM Road 97!"

At the entrance of the residential area, Clark opened his phone and carefully searched for the map.

"Ding, you have a new text message." The familiar number belonged to his comrade, Dirk.

"Clark, I heard you need money lately. I still have some of my discharge pay left. Send me your account number. If you have time, come visit me. My sister keeps bugging me, to play with you."

Clark looked at the message, feeling a warm surge in his heart. Dirk was not just a comrade; they had been friends and brothers since childhood, even before they enlisted.

They had grown up together, and even the money Clark used for his education came from Dirk's parents. Before Clark could reply, the next message arrived.

"The weather has been changing a lot lately. Take care of your health. Don't get sick and have a fever like me. My eyesight isn't what it used to be; I have to wear glasses now. When we meet, don't laugh at me."

Clark was about to respond when his body suddenly froze. "Thunk." The phone fell to the ground. He stood there motionless, a chill running up his spine.

Dirk had been a reconnaissance soldier in the army, with excellent physical fitness and eyesight. But now, his sudden drop in eyesight and fever were clear early symptoms of infection with the zombie virus.

In his memories, the first batch of the zombie virus had already been lurking in some people. The symptoms were fever, declining eyesight, cold limbs, and the connection of memories and clues.

Clark's eyes turned gradually red. In the previous life, when the apocalypse broke out, he had arranged to meet Dirk outside the city. However, on that day, Dirk was nowhere to be found, and there was no word from him.

He had thought Dirk might have been delayed by something, but what he hadn't expected was that Dirk had died due to the virus outbreak, which was why they had lost contact. His best friend had turned into a zombie, condemned to eternal suffering! It was like having his heart boiled in hot oil!

Clark's eyes were bloodshot. Since he now knew why Dirk had died, he would not allow the same tragedy to happen again. He quickly recalled everything he could from his memories. After a long while, he slowly raised his bloodshot eyes. Injecting awakened blood forcefully was the only way he could think of to delay the process of turning into a zombie.

In the early stages of the zombie virus, it gathered in the heart, forming a core. Only by injecting awakened blood before complete zombification could this process be delayed.

Dirk had much better physical fitness than an ordinary person. Generally, the better the physical fitness, the longer the resistance to zombification.

Two hours! Clark quickly recalled the details of infected individuals from his previous life. Dirk could last for a maximum of two hours after the outbreak! So, he had three days to prepare supplies, get equipment, and rush to Dirk's side!

After making a plan, Clark quickly formulated his action plan in his mind. His thoughts were like a silent sculpture. Five minutes later, with firm steps, Clark walked away.

Three days were enough...

At the HY Credit Company, in a spacious financial office, three people sat facing each other.

"Mr. Clark, you must repay this $1.7 million in three days, with a 70% interest rate. If you can't pay by then, we'll seize your house. We hope you won't be overdue."

Clark nodded calmly. In three days, money would be nothing more than worthless paper. In half a year, even toilet paper would be considered more valuable.

In the apocalypse, the only valuable things were food and strength. Along the way, he had borrowed all the online loans he could. He had also mortgaged his house and car to the credit company without hesitation.

In total, he had $3.4 million in cash, including the dowry he had converted back. Although it wasn't a lot of money, it was enough to buy a large amount of survival supplies.
