Chapter 2: Class Dis-Orientation

Most of the people here seemed dressed up in some sort of costume or outfit. I saw a nurse, a maid, a robot, and a woman with a sword sheathed on her back, making me wonder if I walked into a Halloween party.

There were other people, dressed in more...regular school outfits as well.

One such girl looked my way, then her eyes went wide and she started running my way excitedly. She had long, multicolored hair (mostly black, with pink/white/blue lines) worn down, but had styled part of her hair into two oni horns on top of her head. She had spikes coming out of both ears, and her lip was pierced 3 times on the left side. She had a school-style blouse on and a short skirt with thigh-highs on, the right one being pink and the left one being blue. They'd look cute on her if there weren't holes all over the legs.

"Haiiiiiiii!" She half-said, half-yelled at me. "Iiiii-Buki Miooo-da! Who're you?"

"Shurinku Kansatsu, but Shuri for short," I plainly stated, wishing I had some ear plugs a few seconds ago.

"Ohhhhh," Ibuki replied, her eyes widening a little as she nodded. "Ok! You're number 16 in this room then!" Ibuki then looked around the room quickly. "Looks like 8 boys and 8 girls, so we're all even! The little bear-man said he'd speak to us again when all 16 students arrived, so I guess you're it! Hahahaha! See ya later, Shuri!" Ibuki then darted off across the room towards a small group of girls.

...Little bear-man? This girl seemed more random than an honest game of Craps, but at least she seemed nice enough. From her statements, though, it seemed that 16 students were in our class, and we were waiting for...something...to address us in the gym.

Almost as if on cue, a monitor turned on in the gym, and a voice came over the intercom attached to it.

"Testing, testing, one-two...Ah, ok. Ahem, welcome to Hope's Peak Academy! I'm your headmaster, Monokuma! Please, gather in the gymnasium to start your class orientation in about...RIGHT NOW!!!"

A figure suddenly appeared from the bleachers, leaping through the air and landing on a basketball hoop. It was...a black and white teddy bear. Half of him was white, and the other half was black. The white half had a small, black right eye, and the black half had a long, jagged, red slit for a left eye. It appeared to be moving on its own, and I was pretty sure I wasn't hallucinating. That said, I had no idea what I was witnessing. And then...it started speaking and moving. On its own...

"Gooooood morning, everyone! Welcome to your class orientation at Hope's Peak Academy!" Monokuma said in a high-pitched voice that I wasn't expecting. "I am Monokuma, your headmaster, and it's my job to make sure you follow the rules at this academy!"

A large, barefoot man spoke up. "Gonta no understand. You say you headmaster, but Gonta think you look like teddy bear."

Monokuma turned to face Gonta (I presumed, judging from him referring to himself in the third person twice in one sentence).

"I am NOT! a teddy bear. I am Monokuma, and I am your headmaster. Understand?!"

"Gonta...sorry. Gonta not very smart, but Gonta think he understand."

Monokuma cleared his throat. "Anyway, as I was saying... The rules of Hope's Peak Academy are in your E-Handbooks, which everyone should have with them at ALL TIMES!! Some areas of the school can only be accessed by scanning your E-Handbook, and using someone else's is strictly prohibited, so don't lose yours!"

So that's what that tablet-thing was. Makes sense.

"If you haven't already, turn your E-Handbooks on now! It'll display your name, so you always know whose E-Handbook you have. You'll also see the rules of this academy, and other useful information inside. I suggest you, at least, look the rules over."

I pulled out my E-Handbook, and watched it do a quick update, then reboot itself. It displayed my name, Shurinku Kansatsu, then brought up a new screen. This had a "Map" (seemingly of the first floor and dorms area only), a "Report Card", which appeared to be basic information on the other students, and an "Options" menu to adjust brightness, contrast, volume, and stuff like that.

I brought up the "Rules" section and started reading them, and would immediately regret that decision with every ounce of my being. It would sink in just how deep in trouble all of us, me included, were in.
