After setting out for the first time Daniel realized that he had no idea on how to begin training. Usually it was better to find your own path as a trainer as someone else training a pokemon for you would reduce the bond between the trainer and their pokemon.
Curious about his father's strength, he checked golduck's strength
Pokemon: Golduck
Ability: Cloud nine
Stage: Elemental
Mastery: Water 100%, Psychic 48%, Ice 32%, Normal 17%, Fighting 4%
Energy integration (type): Water 100%
Move mastery: Hydro pump 88%
Daniel was shocked to find that golduck had two extra panels he hadn't seen before.
'Energy integration and move mastery might be related to the elemental stage but I'm not sure. Also, wasn't I supposed to be unable to see moves?'
'I guess I'll find out when my pokemon reach the elemental stage.'
He found an open area and asked rowlet to perform his moves.
Tackle and astonish were moves where while using them rowlet coated himself (his rowlet was male) in normal or ghost energy to attack the opponent.
He could tell that tackle was stronger than astonish, probably thanks to the normal mastery.
Peck was a similar move except the energy was concentrated on his beak. This move felt stronger than tackle despite the lower mastery.
'This could be due to STAB'
AN: STAB in pokemon is short for same type attack bonus which means that moves of the same type as the pokemon (in the grass/flying type rowlets case any grass and flying moves like leafage or peck) will inflict higher damage.
AN: Pokemon moves are divided into 3 categories, physical which factors in attack and defense of pokemon, special which involves special attack and special defense and status which are non-damaging moves with various effects.
Finally, leafage which was rowlet's strongest move was also his only ranged attack despite being a physical type attack. Rowlet created leaves made of grass energy and shot them forward. This move had both a relatively high mastery and STAB.
Growl required an opponent to be used properly.
Daniel wanted to see how rowlet performed in battles so he practiced a bit to see how quickly rowlet could follow his commands and set out to find and appropriate wild opponent for rowlet.
He soon found a relatively weak pokemon and choose to battle it.
Pokemon: Rattata
Ability: Gluttony
Stage: Rookie
Mastery: Normal 9%, Dark 5%
Ratatta was a black colored rat pokemon with a light brown belly, claws and lower half of its face. A moustache like protrusion could be seen at its snout.
Just with mastery alone he could tell that rattata was a bit stronger than rowlet. However, he believed that rowlets higher base stats as a species combined with his aerial advantage would help him win.
"Rowlet fly higher and use leafage"
Rowlet flew out of rattatas reach and got ready to attack it with his only ranged attack.
The rattata responded by using growl. The rattata produced a visible soundwave that instead of spreading around moved towards rowlet and lowered it attack before he could create his leaves. The leafage created was weaker than what rowlet created during its practice but he shot it towards rattata, damaging it in the process.
"Keep attacking it" Daniel said as he saw rattata taking damage.
The rattata responded with another growl which once again took effect before the attack, weakening it. Rattata still took damage from the leafage that once again hit it.
Before rowlets third attack the rattata coated itself with normal energy similar to when rowlet used tackle during the short training session. Although similar, it wasn't the same as ratatta shot at rowlet at a very high speed and crashed into him midair which shocked Daniel who thought that the rattata did not have a way to damage his rowlet while in air. Rowlet took damage but it wasn't enough to knock it out. Observing where rattata was falling he shot another weakened leafage damaging it further. Another leafage from rowlet knocked the rattata out, not before taking another quick attack.
Rowlet had won his first fight but not without taking a lot of damage.
