Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Unexpected

Janet's POV

The ride from the restaurant back to the palace lasted thirty minutes.

Once we drove into the premises of the palace, we parked the car in the garage and started running inside without even carrying the bags containing the items we had bought.

Once we came in, lo and behold, everyone was sitting down in the court chamber: Leroy, Tyler, and the elders.

From our point of view, it was as if they were all waiting for our arrival.

"Janet, Daisy, please take a seat," Tyler said to us, and without hesitating, we immediately took our seats.

Once I sat down, I tried mind-linking with Leroy in order to ask him what was going on, but he blocked the link.

I had no other choice but to wait patiently for the Alpha to announce to us why he summoned us.

While waiting, I tried looking at the faces of some of the elders in order to detect if it was good news the Alpha wanted to announce or bad news, but I couldn't detect anything because some of them had happy facial expressions while the others had angry ones. So it was very difficult for me to figure out whether the Alpha wanted to announce good news or bad news.

After what seemed like forever, the Alpha proceeded:

"My dear elders and friends, I summoned you all here because there's a very urgent issue at hand and I need your wise advice," Tyler said to the elders, who signaled him to explain the issue at hand.

"We have a new pack member among us; her name is Janet Benson," he said to them while pointing at me, and immediately all of them turned their gaze towards me.

"She came from the Oz pack; she's been adopted by our loyal chief commander, Leroy," the Alpha said to them.

"I will allow Leroy to explain to us why she had to leave her pack and why he adopted her as his sister," the Alpha said to them.

Without hesitating, Leroy stood up and thanked the Alpha for granting him the opportunity to speak, and afterwards he also greeted the elders.

After the greetings, he explained to the elders how the Alpha of Oz and his son had unjustly executed my parents, how they had left me in the dungeon to die of starvation, how he had helped me escape from the dungeon, and how the Alpha was murdered while we were trying to escape.

After the whole explanation, Leroy greeted the Alpha and the elders once again before sitting down.

"From Leroy's explanation, I'm sure that everything is already clear to everyone," the Alpha said to them.

"At first, I wanted to ban her from our pack, but when I heard her story, I immediately had a change of mind. From today on, Janet is now considered a member of our pack," the Alpha said to them.

"With all due respect, my Alpha, you should have at least consulted us before deciding to make her a member of our pack," one of the elders said to the Alpha.

"Am I under the obligation to consult the elders before taking any decision for the pack?" The Alpha asked the elder while peering into his eyeballs.

"No, my Alpha," he replied before turning his gaze away.

"The main reason why I consulted you all is because the Alpha of Oz pack, Tony Darlington, sent me a message demanding that I hand over Janet and Leroy to him; if not, he would wage war against our pack," the Alpha said to us, and immediately my heart skipped.

With that statement, I turned my gaze towards Leroy, but he seemed not to be disturbed by the news.

"I want each one of you to suggest to me what we should do—should we hand them over or should we prepare for war?" The Alpha asked the elders.

Through all this, he kept avoiding my gaze while speaking.

Only if he could sense what I was feeling, just sitting quietly waiting for some people I knew nothing about to decide about your future.

"I think we should prepare for war," the first elder sitting by the left said to the Alpha after discussing it with his friend who was sitting beside him.

"I will never support them being handed over to the Alpha of Oz pack after what she went through in his hands," the elder who was sitting beside the first elder said to the Alpha, and immediately he nodded happily at them.

With those statements, I heaved a sigh of relief because the elders were four, and among those four, two had taken my side.

"I totally disagree with them," the elder who had asked the Alpha why he accepted me into the pack without consulting them said to the Alpha, and immediately the Alpha furrowed his brows at him.

"Yes, my Alpha, we can't risk the lives of our innocent pack members because of a stranger who isn't from our pack," the elder said without minding the angry stare of the order elders.

"She's from Oz Pack, and any differences she has with the Alpha of Oz Pack are supposed to be solved in Oz Pack, not in Moonstone Pack," the elder pressed further.

"Thank you for your honest and sincere opinion, elder Donald," the Alpha said to him.

"Do you agree with him?" The Alpha asked the elder sitting beside Elder Donald.

Once the Alpha asked him the question, he first turned his gaze towards me and looked at me for a few seconds before turning his gaze towards the Alpha.

"No, I don't; I can't agree with him because I have a heart and I also have children," the elder said, and immediately, elder Donald widened his eyes in surprise.

"You are surprised, right?" The Alpha asked Elder Donald with a wicked grin.

"You thought that your best friend was going to support you, right?" The Alpha asked him, but he remained silent.

"Sorry, but he isn't wicked and heartless like you, the Alpha said to him with a wicked grin, but he remained silent while bending his head in shame.

"Elder Donald, I have always known that you never supported me being the Alpha of the Moonstone Pack, but despite that, I made you the elder of my pack. I never imagined that you were this heartless; you want us to handover this innocent lady to the Alpha of Oz pack so that he will execute her, something you will never agree to if your children are in her shoes," the Alpha thundered angrily at elder Donald, but he remained silent.

"By the power bestowed upon me as the Alpha of Moonstone Pack, I hereby ban Donald Derick from being an elder in Moonstone Pack. You may take your leave now," the Alpha said to Donald.

"You are all going to regret not listening to me," Donald said angrily while standing up from his seat.

Before walking out, elder Donald, or, let's say, former elder Donald, looked at me angrily for some seconds before hissing at me and storming angrily out of the court chamber.

"Welcome to our pack, Janet," the first elder said to me after former elder Donald had left.

"Thank you so much, my elders and the Alpha," I said to them while prostrating myself.

"Don't mention it, Janet; as long as you are in our pack, no one is ever going to harm, not under our watch," the Alpha said to me reassuringly.

"Thank you once again, my Alpha; I will forever be loyal to the Moonstone Pack," I said to the Alpha, who smiled happily at me.

Once I looked at Leroy, he smiled at me before winking at me.
