Chapter 4: My life, Their rules

Unknown POV

It has been two days since me and my sister had anything other than water, I was hiding in our house for a week afraid of being seen by those thugs. I had a lot of friends in here but all of them went missing one by one I know those guys are behind it but what can I do other than pray to god when even the police who are supposed to help us are siding with them all that for some money!

My name is Hwan Geon, I live by doing small chores for the shopkeepers on this street, sometimes I am rewarded with food or sometimes with lots of curses and beating for asking the fair for my work. I would have ended my worthless life either by fighting that man who stole everything from me or simply jumping out of any building. But if I am gone my sister will shortly follow after me or end up in much more brutal condition and that's what makes me continue this life of a pest.

I realize that we can't stay hidden forever. My biggest fear is that once those vultures catch a glimpse of my sister, they'll snatch her away just like they did with other kids. It's terrifying to think about. We've already lost so much. First, our parents, who were taken away from us forever, and then our home, which we had to leave behind. All those precious memories of our childhood, are gone just because our dad had the courage to stand up against that money-hungry monster.

I felt so helpless, and it seemed like there was no one who would care for an orphan like me. Everyone out there would just see me as an opportunity to take advantage of. As I walked past the medical shop in our street, I noticed some money lying on the table. I knew stealing was wrong, but this guy earned his money by selling drugs, so I tried to convince myself that taking from him wouldn't be a sin.

I decided to seize the opportunity and slipped inside when I saw him busy talking on the phone. It was a risky move, but hunger and desperation can push you to do things you never thought you would. Little did I know that this decision would lead to a chain of events that would change my life forever.

My attempt to steal from the drug-dealing shopkeeper didn't go as planned. Instead, I received a brutal punch to the face. I was so weak and battered that I could barely stand. I resigned myself to whatever punishment he had in mind, knowing that any sign of resistance would only make him enjoy tormenting me even more.

But then, out of nowhere, an old lady intervened! She reached out, helping me to my feet, and miraculously, she offered me some food from her tattered bag! It was a heartwarming act of kindness, a shining beacon of compassion in a world that often felt utterly heartless. This unexpected gesture moved me deeply, and it made me question if, amidst the unrelenting cruelty surrounding us, there might still be pockets of humanity and goodness left!

With a heart full of gratitude, I quickly bowed and thanked the kind old lady who had come to my aid. There was no time to express my feelings further. My sister was waiting at home, relying on me to bring her food

Everything unfolded in the blink of an eye, and all I could remember was the sound of my sister collapsing to the ground with a thud. Panic surged within me; I couldn't bear the thought of losing her as well. Without a moment's hesitation, I kicked open the door to our small, dilapidated house and screamed at the top of my lungs, desperate for anyone to hear and come to our aid.

"ANYONE, PLEASE! HELP ME!" My voice echoed through the empty place, carrying with it the weight of my fear and despair.

With no clear destination in mind, I sprinted through the darkened streets. To my surprise, I spotted the same old lady who had shown me kindness earlier she was frantically searching for something with a flashlight. Desperation welled up inside me, and I rushed towards her, falling to my knees and clutching her feet.

"PLEASE, MADAM, PLEASE! MY SISTER! MY..MY SISTER HAS SUDDENLY FAINTED!" I implored, my voice quivering with fear and anxiety. The old lady, without a word, helped me to my feet and took my hand, following me urgently as I led her back to our humble dwelling.

Upon arriving, I began to speak, "...Ma'am.., please do somet—,"

In a shocking twist, the kind old lady who had previously shown compassion suddenly caught my throat, her grip tightening around my windpipe like a snake. My breaths became shallow, and panic set in as I struggled to comprehend her sudden betrayal.

To add to the turmoil, I noticed a vehicle in the distance, trailing our path with eerie precision. My heart pounded in my chest as two imposing figures emerged from the vehicle, steadily approaching our location. My voice barely above a whisper, I managed to plead, "Pl-Please, I—" but my words were choked off as the relentless grip on my throat intensified, and my vision blurred.

I knew everything was over I was ready to give up but my sister I needed to save her, I kicked the old lady in her chest causing her chest to heave inside, and used her to jump onto one of those burly men

I bit his ear off!, this was my last battle so I decided to give my all risking my life but this bastard was able to grab my head and pin me down straight to the floor cracking the floor in the process and making me cough up blood and my eyes going upward with pain and then he proceeded to stomp on my leg breaking it with his feet like some twigs

" why…what did I do to you all..whyyy youFUC%ERS!!!! ANSWER ME!!!" I asked using my years of pent-up frustration as energy but they replied by punching my face several times without holding back anger against me for biting his ear off  like

"You wanna know you little shit!! its because you and whoever is in that little junkyard you are guarding isn't worth living"

"you little twits are just simply rats! I would have already torn you apart if you were not wanted alive, but not for long you son of a bit@h" and he proceeded to punch my face hanging me in the air gripping on my hair.

I was hanging by a thread of consciousness trying my best to not lose conciseness but then watching the second man carry my helpless sister out of our home I lost my reason to live.

He held her like a limp toy, and it tore my heart apart. As I slipped into the darkness of unconsciousness, I couldn't help but wonder why fate had been so merciless to us... I questioned every possible sin we might have committed to deserve such a cruel punishment....'Why? What have I done to you? '

I lost my faith in god... it was like we are meant to be trampled on

At that moment I swore that I'd do whatever it took!, even if it meant obeying the devil himself! to save my sister and escape the terrible fate that seemed to loom over us.

As the darkness closed in, enveloping me in its suffocating embrace, I was overwhelmed by a sense of hopelessness and helplessness like I'd never felt before.

My eyes fluttered open, and to my surprise, I found myself with someone wearing a red top. This person was jumping around like a hyperactive monkey, and I couldn't help but wonder what was going on. My body was throbbing with pain, particularly my left leg, which felt like it couldn't bear any weight. But in that moment, my own suffering was the least of my concerns. The fact that I was still alive meant that my sister might be too, and that thought propelled me into action. I knew I had to find her, no matter the obstacles or pain I had to endure.

Desperation and determination coursed through my veins as I spotted an iron pipe lying nearby. I grabbed it, using it as a makeshift support to stand, though a small groan betrayed the pain I was in. This drew the attention of another person nearby. As I looked closely, I realized it wasn't the burly man I had expected, but rather a kid around my own height. My anger and fear boiled over as I raised the iron pipe still wary of the situation, clutching it tightly in my hands like a makeshift club. I confronted him, my voice gruff from the pain, demanding to know, "Where is my sister?"

The boy approached me cautiously, and I braced myself, clutching the makeshift weapon in my hand. But what I saw next left me doubting my senses, as if I were in a dream. This boy had hair as white as freshly fallen snow, and his eyes gleamed with an ocean-blue hue that was even clearer than the purest crystal. With a warm smile, he greeted me, "You're finally awake!"
