Chapter 1.2

After the introductions, I spent some time gaining Hirata's trust. During our conversations, I assessed his analytical abilities and considered whether he could become a good ally or even a close friend. Although my mother's words kept echoing in my head, "friends are more important than money," I reminded myself that if someone proved to be useful, I would treat them as a friend.

As time went on, our interactions became smoother, and we started sharing our concerns about the S system.

Yuuichi: Hirata, what's your opinion on the S system? Doesn't it seem strange to you?

Hirata: Yes, I've been thinking about it. It's quite suspicious that they would give us 100,000 yen without any conditions or minimum requirements.

Yuuichi: I agree. I also remember Chabashira-sensei mentioning something about "our points reflecting our abilities." Maybe there's something more to all of this, or maybe I'm just being paranoid. - I shrugged as I expressed my doubts.

Hirata: I hadn't considered that, but it's possible that it refers to the amount of money varying based on our individual performance.

Yuuichi: That seems like the most logical explanation. It's as if they're rewarding or punishing students based on their performance. But we still can't draw definitive conclusions.

Our debate continued as we walked to the convenience store. During the journey, I took the opportunity to observe Hirata more closely and learn more about his personality.

We arrived at the convenience store and began picking up the necessary items. However, something immediately caught my attention.

Yuuichi: Hey, look at this! - I pointed to a product in the store that had a sign saying "free."

Hirata: Maybe it's for those who ran out of points. It could be a way to help students with financial difficulties.

Yuuichi: But is it possible to run out of points with an allocation of 100,000? It seems unlikely. This raises even more questions about the real purpose of the 100,000 yen.

Hirata: Hmm... you're right. This reinforces the theory that not everyone will receive the same amount. There could be different criteria for distributing the funds.

Yuuichi: We should be cautious and make sure everyone is aware. Tomorrow, after class, we should share our suspicions with the rest of the class.

We finished our shopping and bid farewell as we headed back to our respective dormitories. During the night, I reflected on our conversation and the potential scenarios that could unfold. I wondered if Hirata would truly be a reliable ally in this situation and how we could join forces to face the challenges ahead.

The next day, on the second day of class, we prepared to share our concerns with the class, hoping that our information and analysis could help our classmates make informed decisions. I knew that in this uncertain time, it was crucial to have allies I could trust and who were willing to face the challenges alongside me.

On the second day of classes, which technically was the first day, most of the time was devoted to reviewing policies and rules. Many students saw their expectations completely shattered by how kind and friendly the teachers were, even allowing a student in the back to sleep. Normally, one would assume that it's the student's responsibility to listen to the class or not, but as the second day progressed, I became about 85% certain that the school was responsible for measuring and categorizing the students into four groups:

- Class A: The ideal students.

- Class B: The good students.

- Class C: The decent students.

- Class D: The defective students.

And I could deduce that the school probably has a system to measure and modify these positions. The problem is, I'm not 100% sure if it's done on an individual or group basis. Another thing I can deduce is that there's no way for there to be 100% admission to any university, given that there are completely useless students. This can be quickly deduced. Now, it's most likely that the school guarantees 100% for Classes A and B, or so I suppose.

At the end of the class, Hirata and I made our way to the podium. I cleared my throat.

Yuuichi: Ahem, can I have your attention for a minute?

The whole class (except for Sudo and Koenji, who ignored me and left the classroom) turned and looked at me attentively.

Yuuichi: Hirata and I want to tell you about some things we discovered yesterday.

The whole class looked at me with anticipation.

Karuizawa: Katagiri-kun, Hirata-kun, tell us what you discovered!

Girl B: Yes, yes, what did you find out?

Ike: What a waste of time, I'm outta here.

Yamauchi: Me too.

Kushida: Ike-kun, Yamauchi-kun, stay, this could be very important!

Hirata cleared his throat and spoke.

Hirata: We discovered that it's highly likely that we won't receive 100,000 points, and we believe that the amount of points will be based on individual merits. For example, a student who talks and sleeps in class will probably receive much fewer points than someone who takes notes, pays attention, and has good grades.

The class became excited, but most of them quickly dismissed it.

Ike and Yamauchi got up and as they walked towards the door, they said:

Ike: Nah, I don't believe it. Sensei clearly said we'll receive our points at the beginning of each month.

Yamauchi: Yeah, obviously. It was explained clearly.

Yuuichi: Actually, what Chabashira-sensei said is that the points reflect our value, and when you consider the excessive cost of giving 100,000 points to every student in the school, it implies that each person's value can change.

Ike and Yamauchi were shocked, and Horikita, who had been quiet during the whole meeting, spoke up.

Horikita: That makes a lot of sense. Plus, I noticed that the campus convenience store has a lot of free items, which wouldn't make sense if we were already getting 100,000 points per month.

Ayanokouji, sitting to the left of Horikita, maintained a blank face, impossible to read even for me, but he nodded slightly in agreement.

If there's anyone I'm curious about, it's Ayanokouji Kiyotaka. At a glance, he appears to be a melancholic teenager with the worst social skills I've ever seen in a human being, but at the same time, he's the first person I can't read at all. Who are you really, Ayanokouji Kiyotaka, or rather, what are you? Even if you're some strange genius or something of the sort, "a genius will never beat a monster."

Thus, as the class delved into a heated debate about the theories presented, my mind continued to work tirelessly, searching for answers and strategies to survive and excel in this manipulative game that seemed to be unfolding in the school.

-------------------------------

The next day, Hirata, a group of girls led by Karuizawa, who kept flirting with me, and I went together to the cafeteria after witnessing a pathetic scene where Ayanokouji tried to join our group.

After having several friendly conversations, a voice came through the speakers.

"Today at 5 pm in Gymnasium Number 1, there will be a club fair. For those interested in joining clubs, please come to Gymnasium Number 1. I repeat, today~"

Yuuichi: Now that we're all together, we could go there as a group!

Karuizawa: That would be great!

Hirata: Sure, and I can take the opportunity to join the football club.

Shinohara: Wow, that's awesome, Hirata!

Karuizawa: Katagiri-kun, are you going to join any club?

Yuuichi: Actually, I never really thought about it. As I mentioned in my introduction, I never had time for extracurricular activities other than studying and working.

Hirata: You should take this chance to try joining a club.

Yuuichi: I'll see if something interests me.

After school, I went to the entrance of the gymnasium where we had agreed to meet. However, I only saw Karuizawa approaching.

Karuizawa: Katagiri-kun (she said as she grabbed my arm). Let's go together. The other girls said they will go with Hirata separately.

It seems that she has made her interest in me public, and that has pushed away the other girls to avoid getting involved in any trouble. Well, the best way to manipulate someone is through love, love completely blinds a person.

Yuuichi: Alright, it will be my pleasure to accompany you, Karuizawa-chan.

We continued talking about various things until...

Tachibana: Thank you for waiting, first-year students. A representative from each club will explain their activities and how to join. I am Tachibana, the student council secretary, and I am responsible for this club fair. Nice to meet you all.

After Tachibana's greeting, the club representatives lined up on the gymnasium stage.

We watched as the club representatives went one by one, making comments to keep Karuizawa interested. Meanwhile, I made subtle gestures to imply that I was also interested in her, such as stutters and blushing.

Once the upperclassmen finished their explanations, they stepped down from the stage and approached some tables. They were probably setting up a reception area to talk to individuals one-on-one and enroll them in the clubs. Finally, everyone left the stage except for one person. All eyes were on him.

He was about 170 cm tall, not particularly tall. He had a slender body, straight black hair, and sharp glasses that gave him a calculating gaze. The student standing in front of the microphone looked at the first-year students calmly.

He remained completely silent. Perhaps his mind went blank, or maybe he was nervous and unable to speak. It seemed like he was analyzing us. He was probably someone important, like the student council president or something.

"Do your best."

"Did you forget to bring your report cards?"

"Hahaha!"

The first-year students said that to him. However, the senpai on the stage showed no hesitation. Neither the laughter nor the teasing seemed to reach him. Even as the laughter died down, his apathetic expression remained unchanged.

Manabu: My name is Horikita Manabu, and I am the student council president. The student council is also looking for first-year students to replace those who will graduate. There are no strict

requirements to apply, but those who are interested should not join any other club. In general, we do not accept candidates who participate in other clubs.

Hahaha, how interesting. It's like watching a young Mikasa Tenji during his early days of middle school, trying to appear serious at all times. Jokes aside, this man seems dangerous and intelligent.

Manabu: Furthermore, we, the student council, are not looking for anyone with naive thinking. Not only will such individuals not be selected, but they will inevitably become a stain on this school. The student council is responsible for regulating the students, but the school expects much more. Those of you who understand this can become potential candidates.

After that unwavering speech, he left the stage and exited the building. No one dared to speak, and none of the students said a word as he left the gymnasium. They didn't know what would happen if they tried to talk to him. Everyone felt that way.

Tachibana: Guys, thank you for coming. With this, the club fair has concluded. We will now open the reception area for anyone interested in joining. The reception area will only be open until the end of April, so anyone interested after that can submit their applications directly to the clubs. With the help of the president, the tense atmosphere slowly dissipated.

Shortly after, the club representatives opened the reception area.

Karuizawa and I left soon after.
