Chapter 10: Just A Pawn

Meanwhile in the marquis palace,

Harold was in disbelief when May informed him about the accident. Not only that, but he also received a warning letter from the academy that Elene should give a proper explanation or she would be disqualified.

This time she had gotten into big trouble to the point that the name of their family was dragged into it. The rumors about cheating sisters spread like wildfire.

"She did it on purpose. The biggest difference between us is our hair color. She had intentionally let others see her blond hair." she leaned on his shoulders and cried hard.

"Why would she do that? She knew well that she would be kicked out the moment she would go against us. She knew she did not hold any power. And had she not substituted in the past tests." though he was assuring her, he still felt that it was too much of a coincidence.

If only he had been there, he regretted not following her personally and sending a maid instead.

"Harold! I thought that you trust me. But you are still wrapped around her fingers." She pulled herself away and covered her face with her hands, "Fine, then I do not care if I disqualify. After all, I can not force you to take sides." her muffled voice full of cries made his eyes darker.

He pulled her back into his arms and rubbed her back.

"There is no way that I will support her if I have to choose. You know that I love you. If not for you, I would not have married her. I did not care much about titles and I had enough wealth. But you wanted to take over your family Elene. You know well what you mean to me."

She felt her ego inflated. A smirk formed on her lips but she hid it from him and took a deep breath.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer for a kiss.

"Then help me. You know that we both can not survive this calamity. But if we take sides, at least one of us can still be saved."

"Of course, I understand that. We will announce that you were sick so you asked your elder sister to request the academy to change dates or give you another chance in the future.

You did not know that she would go there and perform at your place by wearing a wig. It was all her attempt to create a commotion. She intentionally let the wig go so that your future would be destroyed." he grinned when she looked at him with amazed eyes.

Feeling pride at her adoration, he pinched her arms and kissed her neck.

"What were you even thinking? How can I make you suffer when I love you so much." she laughed as she enjoyed the intimacy. That was right! Everyone loves her. There would be no one who would support that pathetic girl.

"Yes, let everyone think that she was a jealous sister who went to any length to destroy the career of her sister." she leaned onto his chest when he nodded in agreement.

"I will write the letters and deliver them this instant." he nodded and stood up to leave when the door was opened again.

From start to end, they were not worried about where Evangeline was! And did not question May when she came back without her mistress.

When she told Elene that she did not let Evan enter the carriage, they just laughed as if it was the right thing to do.

Their family knight was standing there with a pale face.

"What happened? Why are you looking so shocked?" Harold stared at the knight coldly with a look of authority on his face.

"Daisy, the maid that used to serve Lady Evangeline, had given her resignation in the morning. She did not even ask for her salary or other benefits while leaving." Harold raised a brow, a smirk forming on his face.

He never liked that maid anyway. She sticks to Evan as if she was her protector.

"What is the big deal? We have enough staff to replace her. If Evangeline throws a tantrum, you can ask her to talk to me about it." he waved his hands in a dismissive tone when Elene nodded.

"Next time, do not come without permission, and do not create a fuss about such irrelevant matters," she added in a cold tone.

Why does a mere maid matter to them?

"That is not the case, my lord. The maid had contacted the justice office. She had claimed that her mistress, Lady Evangeline, had given every test in place of Lady Elene.

She had been tormented and bullied in the house. She was forced to substitute for the lady. And the justice department is sending two ladies to investigate the matter with four knights."

The color of their faces changed instantly as they stared at the knight in disbelief.

"Who believes a mere maid and sends an investigative team? That is absurd." Elene shook her head but horror was filling her eyes.

If the truth would come out, she would be doomed.

Harold thought about it calmly. He held her and shook his head.

"Let them come, it would end up in our favor. There was no way that Daisy could prove we had tormented Evangeline. Evan is our puppet. As long as she would refuse that any mishap had happened to her, there is nothing anyone can do about it.

And this would be the best proof of your innocence. They had to believe it and then you can give your tests again. This time, instead of using a wig, I will force her to dye her hair to make sure that she did not make a mistake."
