Chapter 10: chapter 10 : Checkmate

Once there, they set up camp outside the city walls and He went to the gates of the City where the soldiers of the watch inspected him with Levy and Edmond the strongest of his 9 m'en.

Understanding that it was the Night's watch and especially a certain young captain of rumor, they told him that King Robert was waiting for him to grant him an audience and reward him.

The guards took them and escorted them to the Red Keep to the throne room where the king's court was held.

How did they know about Jon's arrival and then presence? Thanks to a certain bald man who liked to talk about his "little birds".

In the throne room, Jon and his two men were brought before King Robert with Queen Cersei at his side as well as their "children" Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen Baratheons.

"The young captain of the Night's Watch, Jon and two of his men your majesty." The Herald announced and Robert looked on with a large glass of wine at Jon and the others.

Robert: So here they are, the...great heroes of the Nightns Watch. Come closer…

"Majesty…" they greeted the king before bowing.

Robert: (to Jon) You must be the rumored captain, young, talented and very handsome boy, I wonder what made a promising kid like you join a dusty, boring and useless order as the Night's Watch.

 Jon:…

Robert: SPEAK MY BOY…your king commands you. Are you mute?

Jon: I was a bastard with no future and I wanted to join the order I had admired since my childhood. There I found my place, your Majesty.

Robert: Your accent, you are a child of the North. Which lord were you the bastard of?

 Jon: Is this necessary, majesty?

Robert: IT'S ONLY UP TO ME, KID.

Jon: I was the bastard of your friend and sworn brother, Lord Eddard Stark, Governor of the North, lord of Winterfell...

"By the seven hells…" Robert cursed before straightening up slightly. He stood up and got off the throne to walk over to Jon and place his hands on his shoulders to shake him affectionately much to everyone's amazement.

Robert: Hahahaha! You grew up well , son !! That old bitch Ned apparently took good care of you. You were a cub the last time I saw you and your eyes weren't that color.

Jon: Lord Stark did what he could and to my eyes, I'm afraid it's just a long story, your grace.

 Robert returned to his seat.

"38 men, that's the number of bandits they say you killed, isn't it?" Cersei asked with amusement and skepticism.

Jon: That's right my queen but I wasn't alone.

Cersei: Very well, the crown is grateful to you for this feat. You have saved a large and ancient house in Westeros.

Jon: Your attention touches me, your grace.

Cersei: Can we have a demonstration of your...talents...?

 Jon:…

 Cersei: Young captain?

Robert: I myself am curious to see what enabled you to achieve this feat, young Stark. Ned defeated Arthur Dayne and is a good fighter, I want to see what he taught you.

Jon: Your Majesty, I am not a Stark. I'm a captain of the night's watch and-(interrupted)

Robert: You are what I say you are! Give us a demonstration and I will answer any of your Night's Watch requests. I want to see what Ned's offspring can do in battle.

Jon: Any of the Night's Watch requests ?

Robert: You have the word of the king and in front of witnesses.

Jon Arryn: Your Majesty, I am just as moved as you to see this boy but is it wise to make this kind of promise?

Robert: I am the king, sir hand, I know what I am doing.

Jon: You have nothing to fear, I will not make any unreasonable demands. I would like this to be quick with your permission your majesty and for the best fighter at this court to face me. If I win then the Watch will be rewarded and if I lose then I will always have learned from someone better than me.

Robert: What a spirit! You really are Ned's son. KINGSLAYER !

 Jaime: Your majesty?

Robert: Please duel young Captain Stark. Be careful though, he is my brother's son.

Jaime: I will do my best, majesty.

A space was made for them and Jon calmly faced Jaime who looked at him smiling.

Jaime: Remind me how old you are and what position you hold, boy?

Jon: (sighs) I'm a captain of the Night's Watch Ser Jaime and I'm not your boy.

Jaime: Do the bastards all get so brash when they put on the black outfit?

Jon: So are the kingslayers resubmitting their applications to do it again ?! I hope our good king watches his back.

Jaime started with light and quick attacks to test Jon's reflexes but he dodged everything without any difficulty (Heimdall Style).

He attacked Jon several times and without any success until after one of his dodges, Jon gave him a slap whose sound echoed throughout the room.

 *SPAAAAAAKHH*

"You...did you just slap me...?!" Jaime asked with an incredulous expression as he rubbed his already red cheek from that single slap.

 Cersei:...

 Jon: ...let's continue, Ser Jaime.

 Robert: Ahahahah, a slap...

After this slap and Jon's dodging movements, everyone understood that the young man and Jaime Lannister were really on different levels.

It was now clearly possible that the massacre of 38 bandits called the purge was perhaps far from being a fable or an exaggeration.

They continued like this and Jon gave him a series of 6 slaps while avoiding the attacks of Jaime whose anger and frustration had reached the heights.

In addition to his sword, Jaime also drew a dagger while Jon's sword was still in its sheath hanging at his hip.

He continued to attack the young man who continued to dodge everything to the nearest millimeter while Jon's slaps turned into punches, he had adopted a hand to hand guard and fast footwork (Close Combat Protocol Installed by the Nanites).

Jabs, crosses, hooks and uppercuts were the ingredients of the salad that Jon's fists served to Ser Jaime Lannister tonight and the confrontation became quite humiliating when Jaime's face swelled from hits.

Jon took pity on the knight and sent him to the ground with a right hook, ending the fight at the same time.

He had just beaten Jaime Lannister, one of the finest blades in the kingdom, with his bare hands without any difficulty in a humiliating confrontation and that made the room silent.

Robert stood up to applaud with amusement even though he had been shocked by Jon's performance.

The rest of the court also applauded except Cersei who had daggers in her eyes as she looked at Jon after asking for her brother to be taken to treatment.

Jon: Forgive me for dragging out this duel, but it was about silencing some mouths who doubted my skills. The Night's Watch defends this kingdom and we'll not be the subject of anyone's mockery.

Robert: You just beat the kingslayer without even drawing your blade, I've never seen anyone move like that. You inherited your father's talents in combat. No, you are even better than him. A man who defeated Arthur Dayne in a duel can only father a fierce wolf like you.

"You do me too much honor majesty…" Jon said bowing.

 Cersei:...

Robert: This kid is the best fighter I've seen in a long time. What do you say, Lord Commander of my useless Royal Guard?

Barristan: (sighs before looking at Jon) I don't know much about Lord Eddard Stark's skills but I've never seen anyone fight like you. I know what Jaime is capable of and he is a genius in the field of fencing but yet you beat him like he was a child. Who was your master-at-arms ?!

Jon: Such words from you Ser Barristan do me great honor. Ser Rodrik Cassel taught me how to hold a sword but otherwise I fight by pure Instinct.

Barristan: Boy, what you are saying is unbelievable...

 Jon: Yet it's the truth.

Robert: Very good. Here is to your further reward, by the authority bestowed upon me as King of the Seven Crowns and Protector of this Kingdom . I, king Robert now make you Jon Stark and legitimize your name to the legacy of Lord Eddard Stark, Governor of the North and Lord of Winterfell. You will leave with a royal decree made this very evening.

Jon: Your Majesty, this is too much. My situation suits me and Lord Stark should at least agree to the matter.

Robert: I'm the king, I have all the rights and Ned is like my brother, he will understand. Your intervention in Highgarden helped prevent the extermination of one of the most powerful houses in Westeros by bandits. Do you know what that means, son ? State the main request of the Night's Watch.

Jon: Many thanks, majesty. For a long, long time and far too long, the Night's Watch has protected the realm of humans and the living from what is on the other side. Many of my brothers live in deplorable conditions and die without the knowledge or indifference of the complacent and disdainful people here. The crown itself abandoned the Night's Watch and forgot its prestige by making the order a purgatory for all the scoundrels of the kingdom wanting to escape death. We are mocked, starved and ridiculed by the nobles, the lords and the throne as we bleed so that you may be safe. Tell me majesty, lords and ladies, how many times has everyone here gone to see the wall and the living conditions of its men?

 The room :…

Jon: Also, here's the Watch's request. Since we have been abandoned by the crown and the powerful families of the kingdom, the Night's Watch humbly requested a simple independence from the kingdom in order to remove all its charges from the hands of a crown that spits on us. Only the houses of the North have taken care of us and it is only with them that we would like to be affiliated from now on even if we will avoid getting involved in the quarrels of the kingdom as we have always done. If the Watch finds the resources to survive on its own, it will have no accountability to the crown that has abandoned it for too long.

Robert: The official independence of the Night's Watch and its lands from the crown uh? Is that what you're asking?! I recognize your father's frankness in your mouth, my boy.

Jon: Yes, your majesty. If our prestige was taken away from us before then at least Let us take care of ourselves exclusively with those who helped us and have not forgotten our many sacrifices since Bran the Builder established this monument that is the wall.

 Robert:…

 The room :…

 Jon:…

Robert: I understand, I grant the Night's Watch its official independence from the crown.

Jon Arryn: Your Majesty, it would be more important to think carefully about the matter. The child spoke the truth. Bearing, we don't-(interrupted)

Robert: This claim is purely legitimate, if we no longer want to take care of a woman then we might as well let her go rather than continue to make her suffer.

Petyr Baelish: Although we spend very little on the guard, its permanent absence from the equation will give us more savings and less concern for the crown. So let these people fend for themselves since that is their wish.

Robert: Very well, a decree will be made today but for now a feast will be organized for you.

 Jon: Can I refuse, Majesty?

Robert: It is a Crime to say no to your king, explain your refusal.

Jon: I simply refuse to feast while my brothers starve and freeze to death on the wall. However, allow us to carry out a recruitment in the city, I heard that it is overpopulated so perhaps with the right words, several volunteers wanting a more honorable life would like to follow us to the wall.

Robert: You annoy me, my child, you have taken too much from Ned and his bad habit of being honorable all the time. Do as you and yours wish but disappear immediately from my sight.

"It was an honor to be in the presence of the king, the Night's Watch thanks you for your generosity." Jon said before leaving with his men.

They stayed for nearly four days recruiting before leaving there with nearly 4,000 overall recruits and the royal documents.

Jon bought what he needed and they began their journey back towards the North and the wall.

It was on the way that he decided to start mutating his raven which he decided to name "Night".

He had just brilliantly completed the part he considered the most difficult of his plan and it was necessary for him that the order of the Night's Watch no longer had to answer to the crown.

Now that they were completely free, it would be time for them to Prosper and become stronger .
