Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Heading to the laboratory

[About half an hour ago]

[Regina's POV]

Leaving the control room, I draw my weapon and prepare to find a way to power the lower plant. With power restored, we can check the monitor to see if Dr. Kirk is in that location.

Moving to the left, I come across a set of stairs blocked by a grid. Since I can't find a way to remove the grid, I decide to backtrack to where I descended from the ventilation system and choose to enter the door leading to the director's office.

Upon entering, I immediately notice bloodstains leading to the adjacent cubicle. As I approach, I see the blood comes from a guard who died just a few inches away from a first aid kit.

"It seems he was injured and crawled here to reach the first aid kit, although with those wounds, it probably wouldn't have done him any good."

I notice a keycard in his pocket out of the corner of my eye and decide to take it. "Leo, so the deceased guy's name was Leo."

Seeing there's nothing else of interest, I proceed towards the exit. Right at the exit, I find a shotgun and a disc lying on the ground.

Checking the shotgun, I notice it's empty, so I decide to leave it behind. I pick up the disc and notice it has some letters on it: "DDK H. What could this be for? Maybe I should call Rick." I grab my communicator and call him.

"What's up, Regina? Already miss me?"

"Miss the person who decided to stay in the control room and send a helpless lady to fight dinosaurs? I don't think so. I found a disk that appears to be some sort of key."

"Defenseless my ass, you can kick any guy's ass! Anyway The disk you found is labeled 'DDK' and has a letter of the alphabet on it. Its function is to unlock certain doors leading to important areas. The one you have is probably the key to the main office in this area."

I hang up the call, head for the exit, flip the switch to unlock the door and step outside. As I enter the lobby, I look both ways and see that an eerie silence reigns.

Throughout my years of various missions, I've learned that if a place is too quiet, it's a bad sign. I approach the panel to deactivate the lasers blocking my entrance to the front door, press the button, but they can't seem to be deactivated.

Just then, Rick speaks into the communicator. "Regina? I've taken care of the lock. You can disable the lasers now." "Already? That was fast! Thank you." I'm still amazed at how fast and efficient he is at his job. He can be a jerk sometimes, but he's reliable.

"Oh, come on! Woman, hurry up." He hangs up quickly. Yes, he is an idiot. When I see him again, I'll kick his ass.

With the path clear, I move towards the main entrance. Upon entering, I'm taken aback by how large this entrance is. It's really spacious, with only a set of stairs leading to the upper floor, and there's a door behind the stairs, probably leading to the lower floor.

Approaching it, I realize it requires one of those discs to open. Activating the panel, it displays the following:

<<DDK N disk required>>

"So the 'N,' well, I have no idea where it might be." Deciding to put an end to the matter, I ascend the stairs, heading towards the only door and proceed to open it.

Entering a vestibule, I can see that everything is in ruins, with glass shards scattered everywhere and overturned chairs. But what catches my attention is a dead velociraptor. "It looks like they managed to kill one of these dinosaurs." It's quite astonishing, as it's the only dead dinosaur I've come across.

Noticing another lock that requires a disc, it's likely the main office. Approaching it, I insert the disc I found, which grants me access. However, the problem is that it asks for a password:

<<Code>>

"H B C E F A G D I"

<<Key>>

"B C F G I"

Looking at the letters, I quickly decipher what the password is, entering "HEAD" I see the panel displays:

<<The key has been correct, opening the lock>>

[Main Office]

Upon entering, you can see a very orderly office with a large window providing a view of the wooded area. Focusing on the desk, I notice a bleeding scientist. "A survivor!" I exclaim and quickly approach him.

The scientist, with a faltering voice, speaks, "Are you from the rescue team?"

"Uh...yes, yes, I am," I reply. I can't tell him that my mission is to find Dr. Kirk and not to search for survivors. It's a bit bitter to lie to someone who is delirious, but I have to fulfill my mission. "Do you know where I can find Dr. Kirk?"

"Kirk...that crazy bastard...what is he up to now...here, take this." He hands me a keycard. "What's this for?"

"It's for...opening...the lock...behind...the painting...ugh...the code...to open it...is 70...50...37...ughh!" He falls unconscious from the pain. Looking at what he has given me, I see it's similar to the keycard I took from the dead guard.

Approaching the painting, I find a small button. Pressing it causes a compartment to rise, revealing a lock that requires two keycards.

"Luckily, I have both, that's some good fortune." Inserting the keycards and typing the password, the lock opens to reveal a 9mm pistol with a box of ammunition and a DDK disk. Reading it, I see it's the letter 'N.' "Sweet double prize! Some extra bullets and what will give me access to the door leading to the lower floor."

Taking the pistol ammunition, as having extra bullets will benefit me, I notice that beneath them, there's another keycard, this time with just the letter 'L' printed on it. "What could this be for? Well, I'll find out later."

As I turn around, the window shatters, sending glass shards flying throughout the office. I quickly shield my face with my arms, fortunately avoiding any injuries.

Lowering my arms, I see that what broke the window is a damn T-rex. I can only watch helplessly as it grabs the scientist with its jaws and swallows him.

Retreating to a corner, I can't help but exclaim in disbelief, "I can't believe it!" The T-rex then focuses its attention on me, opening its massive jaws and attempting to catch me. Fortunately, I'm in a corner, so it can't reach me.

I quickly start shooting at its head, hoping to injure it or drive it away.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

After a round of shots, the annoyed T-rex withdraws its head and begins to move away. Its footsteps echo throughout the office. Taking a moment to sigh and calm down, I check my magazine and realize I have only half left. "Damn, I hope I don't run into it again. I'm not sure if I'll survive the next encounter." Shaking my head, I proceed to move toward the main hall.

...

Descending the stairs, I approach the door leading to the lower floor. Just as I'm about to insert the disk, my communicator rings.

"I've unlocked the locks near the entrance. By the way, I thought I saw something that looked human on the monitor. It must be somewhere near the weapons testing room. If you can, take a look."

"I'm on it," I reply before ending the call. I insert the disk, and the familiar password system appears:

<<Code>>

"A B N D E F G H A B W C D F G H

 A B D F G H O M A B D E F G H R"

<<Key>>

"A B D F G H"

Taking a few seconds I manage to decipher the password which is "NEWCOMER".

<<The password has been correct, opening the lock>>.

[Main Office]

Upon entering, I find myself in another vestibule, but unlike the previous ones, this one has elevators. Looking around the vestibule, I notice numerous bloodstains and the body of a scientist right below a map labeled "Area B1."

Inspecting the vestibule doesn't yield anything, so I decide to head to the elevators. Pressing the button, an alert on the button panel reads, <<No power, please restore it in the generator area>>

"I had a feeling it would be like this. Why do things have to be so complicated?" I shake my head and proceed to move to the only door available. Upon opening it, I find a corridor and lasers blocking my path.

Approaching the panel, I deactivate the lasers. Now with my path clear, I move toward the door just before the intersection. Upon entering, I find myself in an office. While inspecting it for any clues about the presence of dinosaurs, I come across some notes that catch my attention. Taking them, I proceed to read:

"It's been three years since the disaster. The performance of the new stabilizer will be put to the test in tonight's experiment, and we will take multiple security measures. One more thing, someone recently used the terminal in this room to produce a fake ID, granting access to all areas without exception. Today, we will have a meeting in the testing room to address this issue." It's most likely that Tom created a fake ID; he's good at that sort of thing.

Finding nothing else, I exit the room and return to the corridor in the vestibule. As I make my way to the intersection, a noise catches my attention.

"Hiiis!"

I recognize that darn sound; it's another one of those dinosaurs. Taking a quick look, I notice it's the same one that tried to attack me in the back of the facility, unmistakable due to the wound still bleeding from one of its eyes.

Making a risky decision, I taunt it, "Hey, you moron, looking for me?"

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Auugh!

...

Breathing a sigh of relief, as I've managed to kill it, I mutter, "I'm sorry, little buddy, but Regina isn't on the menu." With that comment, I focus on my magazine. "Five bullets left, better reload."

Reloading, I move toward the other intersection, and with slow steps, I peek inside, finding the path clear, I approach the last door. Upon entering a conference room, I inspect it for clues and discover a key in the front row. Taking it, I read what's written on it: "Generator Room B1."

"All right, now I just need to go to that room and restore power to the lower floor." Turning to leave the room, a raptor emerges from the ventilation grate, surprising me. As I'm about to shoot it, the raptor hits me with its tail, knocking me down and leaving me dazed for a moment.

It's at that precise moment that I hear some gunshots. After coming out of my daze, the guy approaches and offers me a hand.

"Are you okay?" is what I hear. Looking at him closely, I can see an expression of surprise in his eyes. "Well, who wouldn't be surprised by such beauty that I am?" Putting aside my thoughts, I take his hand and get up.

Looking at him closely, I see a tall guy with dark brown eyes, a well-built physique, and a moderately attractive face. He appears to be a guard based on all the equipment he's carrying.

"That cocky and confident aura he exudes...yes, I'd get along well with this guy."

[In the present]

[General POV]

Seeing Gail enter the room, Regina relaxes her stance and speaks with a somewhat excited voice, "Gail! You're still alive! I'm glad!"

"I heard gunshots, so I came. What was it? Another lizard?" It was at this moment that Axel decided to interject into their conversation, answering Gail with a mocking tone.

"It's not a lizard; it's a dinosaur." Hearing Axel's response, Gail shifts his attention to Axel and calmly approaches, looking him in the eyes before speaking, "A survivor... I see, we're from the rescue team. Have you seen Kirk?"

Raising his eyebrows, Axel maintains eye contact and makes a somewhat mocking comment, "Your partner asked me the same thing. You know, I'm starting to suspect that you're not the rescue team."

"Well, kid, I don't care what you think. Just tell me where Kirk is, and you can leave this island with us." Getting closer to Axel, Gail tries to intimidate him.

"Are you trying to intimidate me? Sir, I'm dealing with dinosaurs. Empty threats don't have an effect on me anymore."

Seeing the tense atmosphere building between the two, Regina decides to intervene, "Come on, Gail. He agreed to tell us what happened here, and the mission is already a bust. It's better if we leave."

Breaking the eye contact, Gail focuses on Regina. "It's always eat or be eaten, Regina, always fight, no matter what you're up against."

"Then, will you tell us where Kirk is?"

Sighing, Axel chooses the best option he has, as he needs someone else to help him access the experimental lab. He needs some data stored there.

"Fine, Kirk is probably in the experimental lab. You just need to restore power to go down to B1, as the access keys to the lab are with me."

Gratefully nodding, Regina turns to Gail. "So, will you go restore the generators, or do you want me to do it?"

"I'll go. I'll also fix my radio with Rick. Stay with the survivor. When I restore power, hurry to the lab; I'll catch up there." With the instructions given, Regina approaches and hands Gail the key. Turning on his heel, Gail leaves.

"We'd better move to the elevator vestibule; we'll have better cover there." Nodding in agreement with Axel's comment, they both exit and head to the elevator vestibule. Upon arriving there, they wait for the power to be restored..
