Chapter 8: Chapter 8 - The slime
Winter has come, and for the past 3 months no one, except Diana, has seen Evienne. She stayed in the nest taking care of the eggs like she did for the others. Unlike her, Diana has come out quite often and has taken command in the development of the village outside.
With hers and the colony's help the village has developed past the point the point where it can be called a village. The previous population of less than 20 people grew at an astonishing rate, now being made of roughly 1000 people, something like a town was already formed.
Normally, such a fast growth would be detrimental, but the with the help of the colony, particularly the ants everything was much easier. Trees were chopped down super-fast and those materials were used to make houses for everyone in a small span of time. This way, no one was left without a home for much time.
They didn't have free lunch though, everyone, has long as they were able to, has to help with the work needed. A lot of people dedicated themselves to the fields, intent on not letting anyone starve in their society.
Other would hunt so that they wouldn't have to only eat vegetables or be completely dependent on the colony.
Many also started fishing in the river, but that quickly proved to be bad since the fish population was starting to reduce quickly so a small group, 20 people or so, followed the river so they could fish in the sea.
In the end, the town grew very quickly. Now it is properly organized, with a main street where people sell things they make themselves, like clothes. Most of the houses are very identical, except a few ones that are bigger because the ones living there decided to expand it themselves.
Although it took a long time, the main street was now in stone, and they were working in making the other streets in stone too. If there was one thing they didn't lack then that was dirt and stone due to all the mining the ants do every day expanding the nest.
Apart from Danny there were now more mana artisans living here, but she was still the leader. It seems she was actually a mana artisan that was at service of the imperial family before, but she was banished for reasons that she didn't disclose. So, the other mana artisans ended up as something like her students.
Due to the growth in their population the mana devices that Mark, now the mayor, had requested were being done by Danny's students and she was focusing in advancing her research, that often produced some 'minor' explosions.
Now though, she was relaxing in her office, drinking tea, together with Diana, who she had become great friends with.
"So? What's that 'thing' that you have?"
"Its not a 'thing', he's technically my child."
In Diana's arms was a blue blob that didn't seem neither liquid nor solid. A blue slime. This was one of the children that came out of the eggs that hatched earlier than the others. With all the time she spent together with Evienne and the eggs she started to see them as her children.
"Oh! One of the famous empresses' children is it?"
To this day Danny had not seen the empress the first inhabitants of the village talked about. Apparently, she was a very beautiful and mysterious woman, it was only through Diana that she learned that Evienne was actually the mother of a lot of monsters that she saw.
"Yes, this little one hatched yesterday and already wanted to wander around so I brought him outside. Now there is only one that we are waiting for."
Diana carefully handed the slime in her hands to Danny, who seemed to be a little scared.
"Relax, he won't hurt you."
Picking the slime up Danny could feel a slightly wet sensation in her hands, the slime was very squishy as she poked it around a few times before he melted into her touch.
"See? He's very cute, isn't he?"
She nodded her head, from what she has seen the empress had a lot of different children. Arachne that she saw before was nothing like this little bundle of cuteness that was in her hands. The slime got out of her hands onto the table and started wobbling around, exploring what was on top of Danny's desk.
"Evienne's children usually are born with innate abilities that seem to stem from her. For example, the little snake that you saw previously seems to be able to eat anything and use it to grow seemingly indefinitely."
Now this was new information for Danny, but not something that she didn't expect, after all she has seen what the members of the colony are capable of.
"And what's the little one's ability?"
"I don't know".
Diana shrugged her shoulders and continued watching the slime.
"You don't know?"
"No, Evienne says it isn't always that's easy to see as soon as they are born. We also can't rule out the possibility that he has none."
"And you are telling me that why?"
"I'd like your help in seeing if he has any ability."
Danny nodded, this wasn't very problematic, she was also very curious what ability he might have and how exactly were the children of Evienne different.
If what Diana said is real then Evienne can effortlessly manipulate genetic structures, alter them and merge them perfectly in a way that the being does not suffer any mutations.
Something like that was completely crazy, if she ever got her hands in the DNA of a strong being, like a dragon then she could become an unmatched force.
That was just considering the pure dragon, if she mutated a dragon's DNA and mixed it with something that complemented it well then it could create an even stronger race.
Danny's eyes suddenly widened as she came to a ridiculous realization.
'What if she can alter her own genetic structure and become a mix of every being she wants?'
