Chapter 4: Chapter 4 Tutorial Mission

I've always hated having this dream of reliving this terrible memory. I hadn't had it for a while so I thought I finally got over it, but I guess not.

This is the memory of the day my life turned into a nightmare, the day my only family, my mother died.

"Jake, I know your awake, come down and eat or else you'll be late for school".

This is how the dream always starts, with me waking up in the morning and getting ready for school. I was 12 years old when this all happened, living with my mother, I never knew my father and whenever I asked about him my mother always had a bitter expression and would say that she didn't wish to talk about him.

I let out a tired sigh and got up from the bed, I wipe away the tears from my face and walk towards the door of my room. I grab the door knob but pause for a moment, reluctant to open it. Once I build up enough courage I opened the door and entered the hallway. I slowly made my way down the stairs and walked towards the dining area.

"There you are hurry up and ea- Oh my are you okay?" My mother says with a worried tone, she quickly puts down what she was doing and swiftly made her way towards me. She put one hand on me cheek and look right into my eyes.

"Why were you crying did something happen?"

"It's nothing I just had a nightmare". I say.

She then pulled me into a hug and started rubbing my head.

"It's alright it's just a nightmare it's not real, there's no need to worry about it everything will be alright". She says in a motherly voice.

"Thank you mother".

After a few more moments she pulled away from me and looked at my face one more time.

"Hehe, now then turn that frown upside down and get to eating".

I sat down at the table and let the dream play out. I ate breakfast and got ready for school, when I was done, I walked out the house with my mother and we made our way to the car in the driveway. My mother got in the driver seat, and I got in the backseat.

The car started and we left towards the school.

'The dreams coming to an end'. I look outside the window waiting.

We stopped at a red light, and once it turned green the car moved forward. I look out and saw a semi-truck barreling towards us.

In the past whenever I had this dream, I always tried to warn my mother to change the outcome, but it always happened, now I do nothing but bitterly watch.

"It was nice seeing you again mother". I say in a whisper before seconds later the truck slams right into us and visions blackens.

...

...

My eyes jolt open and my body shot up, I let out a desperate breath as if I had been drowning. I slowly calmed my breathing and looked around me.

"Finally, back to reality".

I looked down and noticed my body drenched in sweat.

"I need a shower".

I got up and walked towards the only window in the room and pushed aside the curtain. It was still night and the moon hanged high in the sky.

"Showers won't be on at this time, I guess I'll have to settle for a rag to clean myself".

I grabbed a bucket and poured some water in it from the sink. Luckily water is usually on for sinks. I prepared new clothes and undressed myself, I wet the rag and started wiping away the sweat. Once done I put on the new clothes and walked back towards the bed and changed the sheets and blanket.

I then laid back down and closed my eyes and waited for sleep to take me.

...

...

(3rd Person POV)

The sun rose above the horizon announcing the new day. Mordred slept peacefully as if she didn't have a nightmare to begin with.

~RING~

Constant loud ringing noise came from an old alarm clock on the small table next to the bed. After a few seconds Mordred awoke from her slumber.

"Yawn".

Mordred stretched her arms then turned off the alarm. She rubbed her eyes and slowly got up, still half asleep. She was fully awaken to the sound of Ava's voice who notified her that the tutorial mission was ready.

Mordred decided to get ready, first she ate breakfast that was just dried meat and bread then she threw on her combat gear and backpack.

"Ava, can I have the details of the mission?"

[Affirmative]

The familiar blue panel appeared.

[Tutorial Mission]

[The host will be temporarily teleported to the mission location. The mission will be for the host to defend a certain location against waves of enemies for 30 minutes. Supplies such as ammunition will be provided. Mission success will be determined based on the evaluation rank the host will receive after the 30 minutes have passed. An evaluation rank of C or higher is needed for mission success]

[Rewards]

-Unlock inventory function

-Unlock world travel function

-1,000 shop points

[Accept / Decline]

Mordred studied the information displayed on the panel.

"What determines the evaluation rank?"

[Report: Evaluation rank is based off the hosts performance in how the eliminate enemies and defend the location. Eliminating enemies high efficiency and speed will grant a high evaluation rank]

"And how does this wave system work?"

[Report: A new wave of enemies will spawn every 5 minutes regardless if you have eliminated the previous wave]

"So I got to kill them fast so they won't pile up".

"Alright let me gather my gear first then I will do the mission".

[Affirmative]

Mordred left her room and made her way to the armory to pick up her gear that should be ready now. Once she arrived she gave a quick greeting to Mich then paid the 1,000 credits she owed. She grabbed her AK-47 and put the strap over her shoulder, then sheathed the knife on her left arm and put the new helmet on. Since she was there she decided to purchase a large amount of ammo as well as some grenades and medical supplies. She then left and made her way out of the town into the nearby forest. Since she would be teleported she didn't want to create a scene in town in the event the teleportation was very flashy.

"Alright, lets do this".

Mordred then pressed the accept button on the blue panel, and in a instant Mordred was teleported in a bright blue glow.

Mordred arrived at her destination which was an old small factory surrounded by an open field of concrete. She opened her eyes and felt sick and dizzy which was caused by the teleportation.

"Ah I feel like shit".

[Report: Nausea is a common side effect for those who experience teleportation for the first time]

"You should have told me". Mordred says, hunched over holding her stomach with one hand and the other hand on her forehead.

[Report: The host did not ask for such information]

"Sigh, you being annoying Ava".

[...]

After a few minutes Mordred finally felt better and looked around her surroundings at where she is.

"So this factory is the defense point?"

[Report: Affirmative the host will have 1 hour to prepare your defenses]

"Has the hour already started!?" Mordred said in a panick.

[Report: Negative, the hour will start once you enter the building.

"Phew, thank goodness".

Mordred then walked toward the front door of the factory and opened it. She walked in and entered into a reception area with a long hallway behind it. There is a double door at the end and another door to the left side in the middle of the hallway.

[Your 1 hour has now started]

"Time to get to work".
